I had a 45 year marriage that was coming to an end. I was a mess. My first attorney was so terrible that she was late 20 minutes to a court hearing and was completely unprepared to present me. She did not apologize to the judge or me for the delay. Needless to say, I let her go. My next attorney I hired; the office had a staff exodus en-mass. My 3rd attorney issue was straightened out and hired Jess Smith at H & K. I was hesitant because she was such a young attorney; the same age as my daughter. This young woman saved me in so many ways. I will never be able to thank her enough for her emotional support and listening to some of my requests. I'm sure they were not normal but what is in this situation. She was on top of every document, request, response which were vast in numbers. Because California is a no fault state for divorces I feel it can be very lopsided if one has not pursued a traditional career. I had taken care of financials, home and child raising. As a woman who gave up her career as a graphic artist. I raised our daughter to become a wonderful doctor. I wore about 50 other hats to help my husband, daughter, household to succeed. Unfortunately they don't issue college degrees or adjust pay for this service. Jess Smith helped me navigate the legal labyrinth with some of the best representation that a woman in my situation could have. I really do think she performed miracles. She provided encouragement & the strength to fight for everything that I am entitled to, and perhaps more since I was 65 years old and had been with this man since I was 21 years old. Conveniently he was laid off so he did not have to provide spousal support. Jess as a young attorney; I think had a lot to do with what she helped me to achieve since she was so fresh and had set no boundaries yet. I think this career choice can be a very difficult and I hope this young attorney realizes just how much she'll helps people like me. Jess Smith went toe to toe with the opposing seasoned attorney and actually showed much more skill at times. There were many times where she had to remind the opposing attorney about deadlines and responses times. I will be forever grateful to this young lady who is so brilliantly smart and helped me by representing my best interest and got me so much more than I would have ever hoped for. Keep in mind that I thought cat food was going to be on the menu in my retirement & I do not own a cat. Not only is she a fine & talented attorney, but also a terrific human being that cares about her clients. I hope I come even close to describing how much this attorney helped me. This form notifies the court that your new attorney is now representing you, often replacing self-representation (in pro per) or a prior attorney. There is no court filing fee required for submitting the Substitution of Attorney form. This is a standard statewide rule for superior courts handling family law matters like divorce. https://selfhelp.courts.ca.gov/substitution-attorney 2) We met for 5m just to sign 1 paper that he is now representing me. 500 usd for 5 min. 3) Next time we met was only to hand him a check and let him know that he is no longer needed. While he may partially technically be right in terms of meetings only, think again if you like to have this kind of ethics follow you during your case and weather something like this should cost 1,500 USD.
