Love Akateeminen! Not just the best bookstore in Finland, but a great overall bookstore!…read more A place, when living in Helsinki, where I was introduced to Paul Auster (my favorite!) and Thomas Pynchon. Akateeminen - a super selection of English books!

The whole store reminded me of some Japanese department stores especially with the stationery parts. I got some washi tape for a friend! I also saw some sale books for like 5 euro which seems pretty cheap especially for Finland! There is also self checkout machines which I appreciate!

I was wandering by the Rock Church today and walked into this bookshop. The owner's wife greeted…read moreme and was very kind and suggested I stay awhile and see the shop, and then another worker did the same! The front is absolutely beautiful, spacious and yet packed with rare books, signed books, all the books you'd want. It's mostly English but there are also French, German, and Spanish books that I saw. I couldn't see the entire store because there was an international conference on JRR Tolkien's languages going on. As in Elvish etc. But I did get to see the pool table (5 euros an hour), foosball, the snake, a model of Helsinki made of transformer parts, etc. etc. They were very helpful and went back to the warehouse to get a box of books that I wanted. They have programs on every night with concerts, lectures, etc. I highly highly recommend making a stop here!

Nice food, often great vegetarian options as well. Clean restrooms, the only bummer is that they're unisex. Not quite what I was expecting but very interesting none-the-less. Soviet and Russian propaganda posters, lots of Russian-language books and postcards, magnets, and definitely unique for seeing all of this here in Finland as opposed to Moscow. Prices seemed fair (capitalism!) and the lady who rang up my purchase was nice enough. [Review 10065 overall, 1650 of 2018.]

They have some great classics like Ranma 1/2 and Mermaid Saga. Unfortunately, they didn't have Bubblegum Crisis as its a collector's item now. Still, this place had A LOT of manga. They also have puzzles and supplies to paint minitures as well as game necessities like di. Loads of collectibles in the form of Pop! and various figurines. You can find a simple deck of cards or an elaborate one. Customer service was good. They were knowledgeable and helped as best as they could. Ultimately, I left with two manga and will come back when possible. Oh, a huge selection (nearly all) of the books were in English as well! Come if you're into any of what I mentioned above!

If you are coming from abroad: By "Discount" I mean "Not horribly overpriced". The best part is that they have an amazing paper supplies section in the back and they're not messing around in that department. As a teacher, I have been able to find anything I need for my classroom here, whether it's colorful €1 notebooks, caligraphy pens, colored papers in a variety of hues, or stencils and other things one might normally find in a stationary shop. Their children's selection is great and again- they always have discounted items in this section. Perfect for your little angels who will undoubtedly and systematically rip the pages out one by one as soon as you turn your back on them ;) Little toys and educational items abound as well. For a fairly small bookstore, they have a decent selection of English books. Their magazine selection is a huge draw, as I am usually stopping in on my way to visit our dad, who loves his car magazines. They definitely have the biggest selection near Kamppi. I have nothing bad to say about the store. Service is a big deal to me and they come through every time. Selection and price points are great. Location is perfect and so convenient when buying publications to read on long bus rides :)
