I don't know if they were trying to pull off the Bass Pro Shops idea or what but it really didn't work. We went in looking for hockey equipment and the selection here was incredibly limited, which is surprising considering the area. My husband was looking for higher end stuff, and of course they didn't really have very many options for what little they carried. I guess this place would get the job done if you have to gear up a little kid, but to be honest spending the kind of money they were asking for the level of equipment they have seems pretty silly to me. The employee that we had to hunt down for help was not very useful at all, and it was obvious he didn't know much about the equipment that was in the section he worked in. You could tell he knew enough to retail sale, but not really recommend. In any case, Play It Again Sports is a better option close by.

You'll shoot your eye out, kid." (A Christmas Story)…read more When Ralphi mentioned "plunging into the cornucopia, quivering with desire...", surely he was thinking of this massive store's selection of equipment for outdoor sportsmen, notably including an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle! If that isn't enough to tear Ralphi's dad away from the leg lamp for a trip to Cabela's, the chance to get a free 4" x 6" pic with Santa on the second floor should do the trick. Better yet, this Santa won't roughly push the kiddos down a slide after telling them they'll shoot their eyes out! With so many departments like fishing, camping, and toys, along with a huge aquarium in a cave and a gigantic replica of a mountain, you won't get bored shopping here. Minnesnowtans should check out the ActionHeat section, because we don't actually enjoy becoming human popsicles in winter! If you're offended by taxidermy, oh fuuudge...avoid all the North American and African mounts, including a huge elephant and rhino. While I dislike the aspect of the trophy hunting and mounts, kids are mesmerized comparing their tiny size to the large scale of these beautiful beasts and seeing them in their replicated habitats. This store has a little something for everyone, whether you're a Scut Farcus, a Ralphi, or a Mrs. Parker. If driving through Owatonna, make sure to stop at Cabela's--I triple dog dare you! Also, be sure to drink your Ovaltine.

Owatanna's location is one of the more grander Cabela's that I've been to in the Midwest. It was a pretty decent sized building with a decent amount of item variety and a huge taxidermy display right in the middle of it all. I really enjoyed the taxidermy and mount displays at this location. There was a huge diversity of animals from around the world and the quality of the displays was on the same level of a natural history museum. Just walking around and looking at everything was a fun time. There is even a walkthrough aquarium that shows off local sports dish species. Staff were friendly and helpful and prices for most items were very reasonable, especially sale items. The only thing missing was one of those penny arcade gun ranges where you shoot things and they move, oh well!

Update (June 2026)…read more There have been some improvements with the new ownership / Archery Country folks since my last review. Moving up to 3.5 stars. Though the parking lot bait machine and 'banking hours' are still there as tin-eared reminders to every customer who is squeezing in time on the water or in the woods that new management does not really care about your success. Come on guys, every McDonalds franchisee in America manages to have an opening crew. There's not really an excuse. That said, after a bumpy start the archery country guys seem to have finally started getting their act together in other ways. They have completed a minor reno, and seem to be coming around to the reality that in Minnesota exurbs their customers are multi-sport. Put another way: that firearms, league nights and fishing are useful cross sells and frequency drivers. That no one in this neck of the woods is 'just' an archer / bowhunter. And they've worked hard from what I can tell to retain key employees. Thank god. Bottom line: archery country management is not a replacement for, and will never beat, having a high-iq founder like Jeff, who cares deeply about bringing up the next generation of young people in his community as woodsmen, but it's a big improvement over the initial much misaligned takeover period. And heck they've even started to apply Cabin Fever's superior strategy (eg branding, merchandising depth, x-selling) to some of their other stores in the region. With the improved customer alignment and reduction in not-invented-here thinking, I think the future is looking brighter.
