Although the smoking ban now covers all workplaces, this pub was the first in town to enforce a smoking ban I feel that this increased their business over this period when all the other pubs allowed smokers. The Tithe Bar also has a first floor Brasserie which serves food I have never personally been, but the food has a good reputation around town.

They also have a restaurant menu and a bar menu. I'm not sure if you're actually limited on where in the pub you can eat this, but I think it's nice when places have a pub grub menu and a bistro-style one, if they have a kitchen that can cope with it. I shared the seafood platter to start, which was really delicious. It had crayfish cocktail, mackerel pate, smoked salmon and langoustines. Plus bread of course. The friend I shared with and I both really rated this. Then to continue the fishy theme I had seabass fillet with garlic new potatoes, braised fennel, peas and lemon butter. So many delicious flavours in one dish, and the potatoes and fish were cooked perfectly. To finish I had the dark chocolate torte with Chantilly cream. This is a very rich dessert, but thankfully not too sweet. I struggled to finish it all, however with a glass of port on the side I just about managed it. I also shared a bottle of house white which was nice, perfectly drinkable and went well with my fish choices. Overall I'd definitely recommend if you're in the area.

Purpose, to visit and review The White Swan months later, and for good reason…read more First off, if you're here, there's a very good chance the reason is you're participating in the famed English Coast to Coast hike from St. Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. The tiny hamlet of Danby Whiske, panned by the hike founder Alfred Wainwright deserves better. On the day of my visit it was in the midst of that very walk on an utterly miserable 23 mile stretch in the rain. Soaked? No, I was under water by the time I arrived at The White Swan around 12:30 p.m. after trudging some 13 miles plus through fields, pastures, paved roads and more. I sat at a picnic table outside debating the merit of being rude and asking to come in dripping from head to toe. I stuck my head, asked the man tending bar if I could have tea outside as I was a wet mess. A few minutes later a different man emerges, says, "the man says you'll have your tea inside." I said, but I'm pretty messy. "He said you'd have it inside, nevertheless." And so, in I went, did my best to dry off a bit, and promptly savored an entire pot of fine English tea laced with real cream. Heaven help me... resurrected. I watched as a few locals entered, marched to the pub at which point pints were poured minus any orders being stated. Proper. I like that. 30 minutes later I departed again in a misty rain, but energized, and plowed through the remaining 10 miles before reaching my destination. The White Swan is forever in my debt for allowing that stay inside, the warm pot of tea, the acceptance. Thank you, White Swan. Next time I'll cut that hike in half, make a stay in the small village and celebrate the day with a proper pint. You're my style.

On complaining a second time, this time not about the wait but about the food we have been told we aren't aloud to come back again. This pub/business cannot accept critisism when there service and standards are shockingly poor. I highly recommend everyone avoid eating here until massive changes are made. The wide range of food they serve at lunch is very tasty and competitively priced. The pub is well placed for visiting during a pub crawl and like all the pubs in Northallerton it is no smoking throughout. All in all I would say it isn't the best pub in Northallerton, but it is among one of the best, both because of its friendly atmosphere and it's competitive prices as well as it's range of drinks.

Also at the back is an outside seating area which is nice (as long as it's not raining too hard) and has umbrellas which protect you from slight rain. The inside of the pub has lots of seating areas, although this is quite a popular pub and is usually quite busy. The range of drinks is average, which is a little disappointing, Another aspect which is disappointing is the service the bartenders always seem like they want to serve you and them immediately move onto the next customer, which would be understandable if they were really busy, but when they served us they weren't.
