Used to be my home course but glad it isn't anymore. Place has gone completely down hill. No sand in the traps, fairways get burnt out when it's dry and swampy when it's wet as the drainage sucks. Rangers are beyond arrogant. Could be one of the best public golf facilities in NJ but it's now one of the worst. The folks what run this place should take lessons from the folks at Heron Glen, Neshanic or the Monmouth County courses. So much better that Flanders. read more

Challenging course overall. The course is in really bad shape and not maintained well. No sand in traps, decent fairways, and you are hitting off the ground in many areas due to grass being very thin. I will play again, but maybe 1x per year. Of all the county courses, this is definitely the least quality one. read more

Played Flanders Valley White / Blue 10-23-24 , been coming to Flanders Valley for 30 years and it has never been in worse shape. My initial thought was not enough workers to keep the course in better shape (management company) . Couple of greens with large dead spots , tee boxes in rough shape and a general overall look of neglect. I know this is the prime time for leaves on the ground but judging from the depth of leaves no effort to blow them anywhere. If your ball is 1 foot off fairway then its buried in leaves . On a Wednesday after noon for $73 you can get a lot better taken care of facility in the area. Half way house prices are on par with Yankee Stadium read more

Good course. Greens are in excellent shape. Sand traps need more sand. Most of them have just small pebbles and are hardpan. Reads fees are very reasonable. Especially for me since I'm an out of county resident. If you walk, it's a lot less. Greens fees do not include carts. read more

Sad to see how these courses have deteriorated. Even the staff is telling players to take their balls out of the traps and drop behind because there's no "sand" in what's supposed to be "sand" traps...mostly rock and a base that is as hard as rocks. As usual, the rangers are useless, which has been the case for years, even when the group in front of us was over 2 holes behind. All the rangers do is drive around the course and wave like they are royalty. There is no excuse for a round of golf taking more than 4.5 hours. Would be nice if they faked trying to maintain the courses but they don't. I have been playing here for over 20 years but doubt I will be going back anytime soon. Essex County just did a complete renovation of Francis Byrne and is getting rave reviews. Maybe Morris County should do the same. read more

I've played here so many times I don't know why I haven't reviewed Flanders yet. Looking for ward to getting out a few more times this year as the past few I've just been a slacker. There are actually two courses here and for the number of rounds that go through here each season it is kept in pretty good shape. I've probably played here more than any of the other Morris County courses and have always liked that the two courses are very different. The Blue & White course is a traditional layout and much flatter and walkable (though I always ride these days)...lots of trees with some very challenging spots, especially if you can't keep it in the fairway. The Red & Gold Course is MUCH more hilly and similar to a lot of the other local courses. I think the Red & Gold is more challenging and I think it's a bit tighter, but a decent player will still shoot well here. there certainly have been times when the greens lack some consistency, but that happens a lot to NJ public courses... Starters are all pleasant and they keep things moving...which is nice. Clubhouse isn't very big, but they do have a place to grab a quick lunch and a drink at the turn. Most importantly, the course is reasonably priced, especially if you have your County Resident ID. Looking forward to spring... read more

Played the Blue and White course over the weekend. Teed off around 10 so I knew it would be slow. The greens were pretty good. A little on the slowish side but I really like the sloping and contours. Definitely not flat and a good challenge. The fairways are not good. No such thing as a tight lie unless you are on the green. A lot of work needs to be done on the fairways. Poor drainage. Bare spots abound. Tee boxes in poor repair. Bumpy. Poor grass. Many areas of the course need attention. Sand in bunkers was like concrete - some of the worst I've ever played in. Very difficult to judge how hard to swing. I was only in 2 bunkers all day and both were poor. The price to pay was $80 with a cart (weekend). This, imo, was very over priced. This is not an $80 golf course - not even close. They have a lot of nerve charging that price. More like a $55 golf course. So definitely not a good value. For the above reason, I will be limiting my play there to a couple of rounds a year at the most. read more

Great price for a great course! It was a beautiful day and the course was perfect to play. Friendly people everywhere. Masks were enforced in correct places to keep social distancing even. I would say the beverage cart could come around more often. Course was clean and had some challenging holes. I will be back again soon! read more

Played my first round of the season at FV. I and me group were astonished at the outstanding service of the personnel at the shop as well as at the starters hut... Profession , helpful and courteous . I would also add that for April , the course was in good shape This managing group is doing great... Have you guys seen "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld? Well, that is what I thought of when I was at this course. Every attendant, starter, cart guy were course nazi's. If I put my cart halfway on the grass, so people could get through, they would make it a point to come and flip out. I really couldn't believe the way they were at this place. Maybe they deal with a lot of kids, tearing this place up, but come on. You don't treat customers this way. The course itself was pretty nice. Rough was tough to hit out of. People I played with told me "You should have seen it last week when it was higher". If that is the case, their maintenance needs work. Regardless, you will never see me at this course again. Every old attendant that works at this place needs to either loosen up or retire. They're lucky they didn't get a piece of my mind at this place. At least they can read about this for years to come. read more

Flanders Valley is part of the Morris County Park System, and runs 36 holes out of this site. White & Blue is the flatter of the two 18's with Red & Gold being flat on the red side followed by very deep woods tight fairways, giant rolling hills and greens to match. Small pro shop, snack bar and two putting greens to choose no range to speak of. Course conditions were top notch for a Municipal course but again not 5 star fairways but 5 star greens which were fast & firm but fair. Just make sure your on the proper side of the hole before you putt. My biggest complaint always on golf courses are the people that simply don't understand pace of play. the two groups ahead of us. 4 Ladies walking god bless them but come on gals move it along and the 4 seniors who continue to advance the ball no more than 100 yards per shot and plumb bob the green for their snowman has got to be the most aggravating things I'm aware of. Bottom line pace of play was awful almost 5 hours upon completion which takes this from 4 stars to 3 No rangers to be found. Great Municipal track if you can deal with the pace of play. read more

The course was in surprisingly terrible condition. Fairways, tee boxes, and sand traps all were in very poor condition. Greens were in fair condition. Good layout and nice tiki bar for a public course - but wasted by the conditions. read more

Played yesterday with 3 of my usual playing buddies....and just felt the overall course was unorganized / confusing. First off the putting green which I spent about 15 min chipping/putting on were NOT consistent with the always fast to lightning-fast greens.... I feel it is also confusing having 3 separate 9 hole courses based on difficulty. We played what we thought was the blue-to-white however after the 3rd hole on the first course noticed the distances and par for holes didn't match up - whatever thats fine we just went off the plaques for the course and using our Bushnells for distances.... We were walking and at one point we got off the green and there were 2 ways to go with no sign indicating which way was the next tee box - we chose right and then saw it was a tee box for another course so had to walk back again. Add to all of this the small amount of rough between fairway and mud/tree line its a course where pace of play was fine but the overall experience, especially for the money is one I don't think I will be revisiting very soon. read more

I've been playing here for years and can say it's one of the best county courses in the state. For a public course, the conditions are usually above average (With a few areas hurt by poor drainage). The layout is interesting with a few beautiful holes scattered through out the course. Like most have said, Red is the easiest, and Gold is the hardest. Gold is hilly and unforgiving, red is short and flat. White and Blue are similar to one another as far as difficulty. Prices are decent here. A bit more expensive during the morning on the weekend, but you can easily get in 18 during twilight at the right time of the year. read more

I've been coming to Flanders Valley since 1979. Back then it was on the list of Golf Digest's Top 100 Public Golf Courses in the country. Over the years conditions began to decline and 6 or 7 years ago maintenance was so bad the grass on many fairways just died. How that could happen is a mystery but in any case the county then saw the light and Billy Casper Golf took over management of the course at which point things slowly began to improve. Conditions now, while not as good as they were 40 years ago, are pretty good for a county facility but given the amount of play the two 18 hole courses get, things could be a lot worse too. The golf course has been dumbed down a bit. Fairways are wide, mostly weed free and the rough has been cut back. They want to increase the pace of play so many trees have been cut down, ostensibly to give the greens more air but still the place is wide open and you really have to hit a lousy shot to lose your ball. Despite efforts to speed things up, an average round is still 4:20 on a good day. The layout itself, designed originally by Rees Jones, is pretty good and you'll find yourself, after completing 18 holes, having used just about every club in your bag, which is something that can't be said for a lot of golf courses. Each 18 hole course, consists of a tough hilly front nine and a relatively flat and easier back nine. There are a wide variety of holes, some where you really need to have a good long game and others that are more strategic and need some thought to play well. Greens are large, not too undulating or too fast and mostly smooth and in good condition although last year a couple got some kind of disease, I think from too much rain, and had to be reseeded. Tee boxes are inconsistent. Some are good - flat and groomed with close cropped grass while others are terrible - uneven with many bare spots. Overall, it's not an easy course by any means even though the fairways have been widened over the years. Some of the bunkers need new sand and hopefully there is some kind of rolling schedule where a certain number of them get reworked each season. The clubhouse truly sucks. Bathrooms/showers are horrid. You're better off peeing in the woods. There is a nice outdoor Tiki Bar though where you can get barbecued hotdogs, burgers and a cold beer so at the end of a round on a warm day it's rather nice to sit under an umbrella and relax. read more

Word of advice: if you golf a lot in Morris County, buy the golf membership card (45 bucks for the year)...... you get about 10 off each round so you'll make that money back in five rounds. There are basically two layouts Flanders runs here - the Red-Yellow course and the White-Blue course. During some weeks, they shut down a 9 hole layout, so you can get odd combinations between the two. I'll try and touch on each of the four nine-hole layouts to give you a great idea of what to expect. Conditions: REALLY good for a municipal course. You are paying no more than 33-38 on a weekend to walk, but more expensive to ride ... it's New Jersey though so this is a steal..... the greens at this complex are in great shape. Facilities: Nothing to write about -- small clubhouse/snackbar/bathrooms. Small putting green. NO DRIVING RANGE. Course: Red: Easier course of the four. Very flat with relatively short holes. If you can stay straight you'll score very low. Toughest hole on this side would be the par 4 7th. It is a HAUL to even get past the trees on the right to have a shot at the green, and even then youll still be between 175-225 out. Par is an amazing score here. Otherwise, very easy to put up a good score. White: Fun side, but with a questionable Par 5 #3. This is a double dog leg which, unless you can fade it/draw it hard, you will be hard pressed to make it in two, let alone think about birdie. Green is well protected. More woods on this side, so keep it straight and the holes will not beat you up too much. Blue: Much like the white side, except with better whole selection. I always enjoy courses which start with a par 4- par 5- par 3, and this has that. Definitely even more wooded than the white course, and with a difficult #2 par 3 (uphill) and #4 par 4 (water left, woods right). Keep it in the fairway. Yellow: By far the toughest test of the 4 nine-hole layouts. Woods. Slanted Fairways. Small, slanted greens. Remember the ball ALWAYS breaks from the hill. Even if it looks like it goes uphill. This course is usually paired with the Red course, so if you start on the Yellow (#1 is a par 5) hit 3 wood off the tee and get your par. You can most likely get a par on the #2 downhill 175 par 3, and will set you up well for the rest of the yellow side. HARDEST HOLE: #4 par 5. This is a SEVERE dogleg left par 5. You HAVE to layup as your first shot. You can put a slight draw on it, but you risk bringing the woods into play - keep it in the fairway with an iron (5 or 6). The fairways on this side slope severely, so I would recommend hitting iron or 3-wood off many tees as you are elevated. Coolest hole would have to be the #6 downhill par 3 which is elevated about 100 feet above the putting surface. Longer than you think!!!! Great 36 holes here, at a great value. read more

I appreciate Mr. O'Rourke replying to my review. First I would like to say this is the first time I ever felt compelled to write a review. A few points to his reply: 1. Hopefully the greens will be back to normal by the end of June as indicated. I had read a prior review made by a fellow golfer in May regarding the condition of the greens. Mr. O'Rourke said the course was slow to "wake up" from a long winter and the greens would be back to par by the end of May. Well the end of May has turned into the end of June. We are 3 months into the golf season and you still cannot play 18 nice greens at Flanders. Again I feel that there must have been a maintenance error. The other area courses did not oversleep. 2. I heard from a friend who knows a worker at Flanders and the purpose of switching the nines around was so you walked off the 18th green by the tiki bar and not the parking lot. I would do the same thing if I owned the place. The impact it has on me as a golfer is that I won't play there after work as I prefer the Red and White if I am not going to be able to get 18 in. 3. The reply to the removal of water coolers from the course is idiotic to say the least. Not everyone brings a water bottle and even it you do it would be nice to be able to fill it up a few times per 9 holes. Mr. O'Rourke indicated it is easier to monitor the water flow. Really?? How about when it is 90 and humid making sure the golfers can stay hydrated. What's next?? A cart girl driving around selling water? My recommendation to the area golfer is to get on Golf Now and get deals during the week to play area courses at a fair price and ones that are in better condition. Farmstead has an email list you could get on and get updates on their prices. That course is in great shape. I hope Flanders does get back to the condition it once was as both courses are nice layouts. read more

Going to get much better as the fall kicks in, this is when Flanders really shines. I have to say having played this course for over 15 years, its been up and down with some of the drainage issues (namely #14 around the lake has been historically fairway ripped up) and a few holes on the red course with drainage. Went out sunday after a solid day and a half of heavy rain, and it was in great shape. some ponding, however spare was expected. I didn't practice putt on the green and realized I was in for a long day after getting on the first hole in regulation.... the greens were fast! i mean country club fast. not used to this at flanders. on #3 on the white (uphill par 3) took my 8 iron out from the white tees moved up a few yards, put it on the middle of the green about 15 feet uphill from the pin. Pin was on the crest of the hill sloping towards the front. I three-putt tha green too and my touch was good. right at the hole and stopped, then six feet past. May be frustrating for the average golfer but I enjoyed trying a practice butt again (even better touch than the first one) and nearly the same result. After the round (which since it was cart-path only) a lot of jogging back and forth to jockey the cart, over 5 hours even though no one was in front of us. They didn't cut the rough because of the rain and they should generally leave it like tha,t missing the fairway by a few feet is punitive and that's what makes good golf. read more
