An amazing area with lots of hiking and walking trails. Great environmental education center too! They upgraded the buildings and parking lot a few years ago, so there is more accessibility. A wonderful place for all seasons to birdwatch, hike, snowshoe and cross-country ski!

What a great place to walk around! It was so beautiful outside and you could walk for an hour or five! Just make sure on a sunny day that you wear a hat! The flowers are so beautiful and we really loved everything that we saw! I highly recommend it! Walk and make sure you bring water with you! The wood structures are so fabulous too with the classrooms in them! Take a walk on the wild side...

Excellent low key nature center on a set of old farm parcels pulled together over fifty years, featuring mostly level short hikes through woods, fields, along a kill, and by ponds. There's a loop trail that takes about an hour, and the outstanding beaver pond trail that is about a twenty minute loop (there are no beavers, but plenty of turtles and fish), and a dozen or so side trails. In the middle there are "experimental ponds" that are reminiscent of the old English garden style, with somewhat ranodmized trails criss-crossing the set of small ponds. We're not x-country skiers but it looks like great skiing or snow-shoeing in season. The visitor's center is small but well-appointed, a brand new LEED platinum structure that's sort of interesting all by itself. The classroom/meeting space is huge. The fact it's free is a great bonus. The hikes aren't quite five star, but if you have smaller kids or can't do steep climbs but still want a nice hike across a few biomes, this place will be a treasure.

No matter the season, the trails at Five Rivers do not disappoint. Today, my toddler hiking buddy and I saw plenty of turtles, ducks, a rabbit, a heron, hummingbird moths, cicada killer wasps, and deer. We visited the new visitors' center. The contents were similar to the old center: taxidermy, Argo the owl, live turtles, viewing hive...

What a hidden gem! Nature trails, ponds with benches invite you to nature watch all year 'round. Free to the public, the trails are on NY Department of Environmental Conservation property. In the summer, there are bees, bats, songbirds, butterflies, beavers, raptors to see. There are many educational classes for all ages. I have taken a Geocaching 101 before. Be sure to visit the Visitors Center, where you'll find maps, brochures and a huge collection of stuffed wildlife and rehabilitating live animals. Five rivers is getting a makeover with new buildings and driveway being constructed at the time of this review. This will ensure safety and preserve the educational capacity of the Center. On today's visit, I spotted two deer helping themselves to berries on trees in an orchard specifically planted to offer winter nutrition to wildlife (see photo). These particular trees hold their berries all winter long to ensure food is available to animals even during the coldest season. There is much to enjoy at 5 rivers, mostly due to the diligence of Friends of 5 Rivers, who organize and teach many of the classes and whose dedicated staff and volunteers over the years have invested in developing the area and programs. Even if you don't end up learning about any of the history or don't take a class, 5 rivers is a nice break from the city to clear your head and connect with nature.

I am sorry to be writing this letter but feel I have no choice. The repair work that was done on my…read moreRuth Duckworth sculpture is extremely disappointing and frankly unacceptable. I went into this with realistic expectations. I did not expect to see a completely invisible restoration, but when I finally had the opportunity to inspect the "restored" piece I was shocked by how crude the work was. The section that was reattached does not align properly with the section it had been broken off from, at the joint line they are two different heights. The wide and boldly visible bond line between the two sections is very distracting and its surface is irregular and unsightly At the edge where the two pieces connect there is an open area that's missing material. I have shown images to two longtime museum restoration experts I know and asked for their opinion. They were reluctant to critique another restorer's work but in spite of their professional reticence one said, "That this could look much better." The other restorer noted "it should have been possible to achieve a far less visible (though not invisible) joint." I came to the Williamstown Art Conservation Center after speaking with other restorers who said the size and weight of the sculpture put the job beyond their comfort zones. The poor quality of repair work displayed on the Duckworth seems to indicate that the Williamstown team should have said the same. It would have saved me a great deal of time and money as well as avoiding WACC having a very unhappy customer. Now I need to find a more knowledgeable person who will first have to undo the work the Williamstown team has done before they can improve and bring the sculpture to a presentable condition. The Williamstown Art Conservation Center has an excellent reputation, but this very disappointing repair certainly does not live up to it. Douglas Heller Heller Gallery NYC

I was walking along Church St. in Lenox, and decided to check out this so-called "gallery" -- Sohn Fine Art. I stroll in with high hopes, and honey... big mistake. Stay FAR away from this sad little wannabe "gallery." The owner, Cassandra Sohn, is out here acting like she's Norman Rockwell's long-lost twin -- please. She's not visionary; she's just delusional. Her attitude? Rude. Her so-called "art"? Tired. Dated. Like, if dust could be pretentious, this would be it. In my opinion, you're better off buying in the art section of Five Below.....

***** WARNING ARTISTS *****…read more I entered a fee-based competition for possible inclusion in a Soon Gallery exhibition. Instead of adhering to the acceptance/denial notification date she originally stated in the specifications, the gallery director switched to a Hollywood style maneuver and told me I was, "shortlisted", with a NEW notification date a month away, thus rendering my artworks in limbo and unavailable for exhibition elsewhere. I contacted Ms. Soon and demanded a refund. After her sad attempt at convincing me that by having shortlisted several of my pieces she had indeed fulfilled her obligation of timely notification, I contacted my credit card company. Bank of America has no tolerance for this type of manipulation of terms and upon their investigation granted my full refund.

I am an Albany resident who went to Miko Peled's recent presentation at Bethlehem Public Library. I…read moream stunned that the library was so conflicted before and after Peled's talk with the board considering canceling it. And then to hear that somehow the board is supposedly "sanctioning" "Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace" after the presentation. Have the board members heard of "gas lighting?"--where someone is blamed for what someone else does? The only outrageous behavior was by a group of women (this was their observed gender) who absolutely did not want to hear Peled's reasoned interpretation of what is frankly a vicious religious conflict that will never be allowed to end. Repeatedly they stood up and started shouting from the back of the room at Peled. There were library staff there--is there no "room use policy" to evict disruptors? Similarly, the only threatening action came from an anti-Peled man who said he "wanted to kill Palestinians." The cops were called on him, and no reason to call them for the quite docile "Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace" people who answered the anti-Peled women with "let him speak." And "Bethlehem Neighbors" is said to be under consideration for sanctioning? The authoritarian proscription by library staff of saying "From the river to the sea" is, sorry, ignorant authoritarianism. The next sentence is "Palestine will be free." It has nothing to do with ethnic cleansing of any group. This phrase has somehow been contorted into "anti-semitism"* and is thus something that "should not be said." *You do know that Arabs (whether Muslim, Alawite, Druse, Christian, Jewish etc.) are semites?--a designation since the 1800s of a language family. You also presumably know that "anti-zionism" is not "antisemitism?," and is is opposition to political control of an area by Jewish people--with the ultra-orthodox "anti-zionist" by their interpretation of religion. Have you noticed the ultra-orthodox men who join anti-zionist demonstrations? Do I have something "controversial" that I could speak about at the library? Yes, insights over a long career on the early evolution of life and all the evidence for "deep time" that is now quite quantitatively and precisely calculated. Now, I have had creationists shout their "beliefs" (a belief is not an observed fact) at several of my popular talks. I can only presume by my observation of the Peled talk that the library would not evict a "protester" under its "room policy" and would likely "sanction" me for any protest by anyone claiming to be hurt/threatened by reasoned free speech.
