We ate here for a late lunch / early dinner at about 3.30 and the restaurant was not busy, there was only one other couple eating in. The decor is very in your face American diner and it was quite loud and echoey but was spacious and clean with lovely big booths along one wall. We started to order our food and quickly realised we needed some help with the menu! Our server was lovely and explained that burgers come plain and you can add as many of as few toppings as you wanted for free (think Subway for burgers!). I went for the Bacon Cheeseburger and added crispy onions, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, pickle....you get the idea! Whilst the food is served quickly akin to fast food, the prices are higher, with my burger costing £8.50. The soft drinks are served as a bottomless cup (for £2.50 I think) and if it's made by Coca Cola they sell it which gives you a choice of over 100 drinks!! You self serve your drink from one of two machines and given how long it took me to browse the choices, I can imagine this might cause a bit of a queue at busier times. I enjoyed my burger - the toppings were the best bit, I particularly liked the bacon and the cheese - but the burger patty was quite ordinary. Given the number of burger restaurants in Glasgow (where I used eat my burgers) it's hard not to compare and for me Five Guys just isn't a patch on a Bread Meats Bread type burger. The chips were good, crunchy, super salty and cooked skin one, they were delicious. And I found lots of drinks I really liked, the cherry and vanilla coke is good!!!! All the staff I spoke to were lovely, a number offered to help out, with one bringing a fab high chair and crayons for A (even if bringing crayons for an 8 month old did make me laugh a bit, all he wanted to do was eat them!!) and there were a lot of staff. One mentioned that the lunch service had been crazy busy so I'm guessing that's why there were so many. I'm just not sure our bill for 2 burgers, one chips & 2 sodas at £27 was great value for the quality of our meal. read more

I've been here a few times now, hungover, quick lunch and pre-cinema! What I love about it every time is the music, loud rock music blaring which for me is awesome! Also the free peanuts! A great idea and tasty snack whilst you wait for your order! I also love the burger itself, made fresh in front of you with more topping choices than you can process all included in the price. I usually go for a small burger, don't think everyone realises it's the same size as the large but just has one patty instead of two! Perfect for me! Small things that annoy me, only ketchup as a dip option for chips (surely Mayo should be as standard now!?) they will however give you it if you ask! I've been a lot at five guys buyer and fries a lot when I was living in London and always loved it! So when I have heard that Edinburgh had one, I had to go! The staff was really friendly, and helpful. I took a big double burger and bacon and I have to say, for a first try that was really tasty! We could chose between both of the fries salted or cajun so the waitress offered to give us plain one with a side of cajun spices. That was really nice of her and the fries were perfect! I took also a Oreo milkshake with whipped and a bit of chocolate that was amazing! Even if they are a bit pricey they totally worth it!! If you're looking for a proper American burger joint in Edinburgh, then Five Guys will be the ideal restaurant for you. As part of the busy Fort Kinnaird leisure complex, it is always really crowded and the staff always look really frazzled trying to keep up with the extreme flow of orders coming through. However, once you do get your order, it will be well worth the wait. The burgers are really juicy and meaty and are always really satisfying to bite into. The fries are very crispy and they pre-salt them so avoid putting salt on them. There are also 2 drinks machines in the corner which have the most diverse roster of drinks I've ever seen. My personal favourite is the raspberry fanta. It is sweet but with a refreshing tartness to it. The atmosphere is a bit noisy with the staff bingo calling order numbers. The music is also very noisy as well. Apart from this, it offers a great all out American experience. read more

I really like Five Guys. It's not gourmet - I'd say it's a high class fast food. I visited for the first time yesterday. The place is very American. Photos of American magazine articles about the place decorated on the walls (and in the bathroom). As you wait in line to place your order you can munch on some peanuts (free!). Placing your order is easy. I went for a cheeseburger which had two patties. Everything is fresh to order. There are 15 items that are free to add to your burger. I went for fried onions, grilled jalapeños, lettuce, mayo and ketchup. My friend advised that the bacon is really good and crispy. I decided to forgo it this time but I'll definitely get it next time. The bacon is american style - thin strips! And they deep fry it to get it uber crispy. My boyfriend and I originally ordered the large fries but we're told to go for the medium size as large is for 3-4 to share. We also got the spicy seasoning mix on top which was delicious. We waited about 5-10 mins for everything to be ready. In the mean time we visited the fountain drink machine. Over 100 varieties of soda! Such as diet coke lime flavour or various concoctions of fanta. You could have fun with it. And it's unlimited refills!! I think the burger is great - Juicy and flavourful and also massive. I also really like the French fries. They keep the skin on and they are fresh - not frozen! The fries would be perfect for poutine!! (I wish poutine was an option on the menu!!) The place is clean and the staff are really happy. The only negative I have with Five Guys is the price. It came to to £25 for two cheeseburgers, two sodas and med fries. A cheeseburger is £8 here but in Toronto, Canada the same burger is equivalent to less than £4.50. That's a big difference. It's more of a guilty pleasure/I'm missing North American fast food treat but I don't see myself coming often - as I can 'gourmet burgers' elsewhere and not pay as much. Yep - I'm a fan! Coming all the way from California, Five Guys is slowly making its mark on the UK. I prefer the burgers to the chips unlike Murphy S. The chips are ok but nothing special. Tip for the burger - it's a dirty burger. I would not say it is a gourmet burger. More fast food that pub burger. Still, pretty good service and still quick if you don't order online and just at the actual counter. It's a wee bit expensive though for fast food, but still tasty. There are plenty of seats & tables inside, but there are some outside too. Inside it's got that American retro feel and is quite light and airy. I was going to get a hotdog here but it turns out their hotdogs are beef and not pork. So if you don't want the vegetarian options your only other option is beef, beef or beef. I don't eat beef and their vegetarian offerings didn't really thrill me. So it looks like I won't be eating here. read more

Gourmet burger joints are aplenty in Edinburgh. I was interested in trying Five Guys as the brand seems to inspire fans across the pond. There seems to be a trend with burger restaurants to have a sense of ironic fun where everything is a bit kitschy and rudimentary. Five Guys seems to approach this from the other end; at it's core it's still fundamentally a fast food joint but it's trying to be a bit more upmarket. It seemed clean enough but it's not the kind of place you can, or would want to, sit for any large period of time. It may still be trying to position itself as fast food at the end of the day but they aren't charging fast food prices. The burger itself was adequate but not particularly inspiring. You don't necessarily need a brioche bun to make a good burger and simplicity can be good, but it was lacking in real flavour and any toppings are an afterthought. (I ended up with some wilted lettuce and some raw onion). For this price (£8 for cheese burger on it's own) I've had much, much better. The fries were the high point of whole experience. Greasy, but tasted good. If you are in Fort Kinnaird there may not be a great selection of alternatives. Maybe I'm missing the point but ultimately if I really want that fast-food diner experience I'd probably just embrace it entirely and go to McDonalds for half the price. There are probably more burger places in Edinburgh than there are Starbucks Coffee shops. In my opinion Five Guys is the best you can get. The patties are always juicy and perfectly cooked, the buns aren't overbearing and the fries absolutely steal the show - always perfectly cooked and packed with flavour. In my opinion this is the perfect combination for a burger. I like it simple. There are a couple of things that I don't like about this place though: Firstly the music is always ridiculously loud, like stupidly loud, almost nightclub loud. Don't get me wrong they always play decent music but there's no need to have that dial turned all the way to eleven. Next up, I love bacon as much as the next guy but Five Guys bacon doesn't do it for me. Its very much the american style. Way to crispy for my liking but I know some people enjoy that. Finally I have to mention the price. For what is essentially a fast food takeaway this place is pretty damn expensive. You'll probably pay £25 to feed two people. Of course I would be happy to pay that in a restaurant but it just feels expensive here. This is probably the main reason it loses a star. Those points aside I always find myself making the trip up to Fort Kinnaird just for a burger and if there was one in a more central location I would find myself in there pretty damn often. My one final tip is always eat as soon as your served. If the burger is kept wrapped in the foil for too long it starts to go pretty soggy. read more

Not impressed- today my son and I drove across town to try out the Five Guys at Fort Kinnaird. Having just got back from a holiday in California, we were curious to compare them with, say , In-N-Out, or Carl's Junior or something like that. Firstly, I noticed that there weren't any milk-shakes, or desserts. Hmm- oh well, never mind. Then we ordered- two big burgers; two medium fries, and two bottles of Irn Bru- total £30. Wow! That's not a modest price. Sitting down, slightly shocked at the bill, we waited to see if the burgers and fries were going to be as amazing as the quotes ,from various magazines , on the walls suggested. Nope-the burgers were fine, but not worth the £8.75, and the fries were ok too, but,again, not worth the £4. I really hoped to be knocked away by the whole visit- good food at a reasonable price. Yes i'm a fan - I don't think you can go much wrong for a burger and fries. Yes the menu is limited in general so the vege section is bound to be too but everything they serve is fresh to order and made your way. What I mean by that is 15 free toppings to pick from...they'll also serve you the sauces as dipping sauces rather than on your burger if you prefer. Don't think gourmet think damn tasty dirty burger and fries. If you're scared of getting a bit of juice on your fingers there's a TGI's or Frankie's next door for you to tuck into one with a knife and fork ;) Yes it's £8 for a burger but you'd pay an additional £7 in it's neighbours for a burger and £6 less in the likes of McDonalds but overall I don't think you'll be disappointed.
