The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway - Base station

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Our conductor, Jim, was the funniest yet most informative person. He made sure the trip was smooth and on time, along with the person he called the "coach engineer," or the train's driver. The entire trip lasted 3 hours, 1 hour each way to and from the summit, plus exactly 45 minutes at the top. The train has large windows that let you soak in the stunning scenic views. The sights are breathtaking, with a variety of rocks, some rugged mountains, diverse vegetation depending on the altitude, and snow- capped peaks. When we reached the summit, we were given clear instructions that the train only waits for 45 minutes, and it is very important to stick to that. The summit features a viewpoint, a gift shop, and a food court. Since the summit is at an elevation of 14,000 feet, feeling lightheaded is quite normal. The food court offered donuts, soups, hot chocolate, and many packaged foods. We tried the famous cinnamon donuts and broccoli cheddar soup. The donuts were delicious, and the warm soup helped combat the effects of the altitude. The gift shop also had a good selection of souvenirs, and we picked up some magnets. The summit had a good amount of snow, and it was extremely windy. 45 minutes didn't feel like enough time to fully take in the views because it passed so quickly. Still, we made wonderful memories and took some fantastic photos. The mood on the way back was quite different; most people were tired but happy. Overall, it was a beautiful experience and worth the money, in my opinion. Pro tip: The route is very steep at some points. While choosing the seats when booking, it's important to pick the right direction to avoid motion sickness. The summit can get very cold and windy due to the altitude, so dress appropriately. Outside food is strictly prohibited on the train, but do carry water bottles because staying hydrated helps prevent lightheadedness at the summit.

From start to finish, it was a beautiful and memorable experience. Tip: Sit on the left side of the train if you can. That side has the best views of the mountains, lakes, and scenery. The right side is mostly the mountain itself, so the views don't really open up until you get higher up. The conductor was very knowledgeable and shared interesting facts along the way, which made the ride even more enjoyable. The train ride itself was smooth, scenic, and relaxing. At the top, there's plenty to do--food, souvenirs, and historical displays where you can read about the railway and its history. We even spotted some goats, which was a fun bonus. Overall, this was a fun, beautiful ride and well worth the trip. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

This heavy set lady, whom I think was a head clerk or manager, told me no that I could do that and bag myself ! I was stunned because I mentioned why not, the other Dollar Tree stores that I go to bag my items and are very cordial and courteous? I don't see any sign that states you bag your own items? She became very irrate immediately and did not give me a receipt. I stated that since you don't want to bag my items then you don't need me as a paying customer as well. I am requesting a refund. She insisted that she needed my receipt and I stated that you did not give me one. She stated that I would need to wait after the next paying customer after me. She could have refunded my purchase at that time. She was trying her best to be as rude as she could to me and make a spectacle of it. Then when she did refund me for $5.00 she did not hand it to me, she laid it on the counter. I picked it up and stated what terrible customer service you just demonstrated and it was uncalled for. Totally unprofessional in treating a customer and way out of line. All I wanted was my items to be bagged. If you can't do that you should not have a job because that is what you are hired for. Boy, she continued to fly off the handle in front of a whole store of customers. She should be FIRED.

I speak from experience when I say that this area is crime-ridden. The first thing that came to my mind was that she was signaling to someone that I was a good mugging target. It was a Sunday at 9pm as the store, and the town, were closing down for the night. In the parking lot was an idling car just a few feet away and my mind continued to race... were they waiting for me? Or were they just waiting for an employee to get off work? It felt like forever to get my groceries in the car. Now I had to make sure that idling car wasn't following me. Being a 64 year old female on oxygen, nothing will send me back to that store.

Yes, some prices are higher than the national chains, but some are the same and some are lower. The store employees are friendly and helpful. The hidden gem of this store is the fresh baked bread and rolls. Each day a truck comes from Denver around 2-3 p.m. and delivers still-hot items. The hoagie type rolls are 3 for $1.00, huge in size, delicious and a bargain. Some of their sourcing is extremely unique. An example, bottled sauerkraut from Bavaria. Totally unlike anything made in the U.S. Much milder. This store deserves a try from everyone. The company originated in Los Angeles and carved out a niche by servicing a largely Hispanic clientele. The Colorado operation I suspect originally was a franchise type set-up, but it is now employee owned.
