Before and after

Ok it has been a long time since anyone reviewed George on Yelp, but my review would be exactly the same as the two below in terms of George's aproach and the reaults. My goals were to establish better habits, lose the fat I was building around my stomach and build a bit of muscle. I accomplished the first two goals well within the 6 weeks and the habits continue after for me. It did require a new set of "go to" things to eat, and I am not as strict as I was for the initial 6 weeks, but George gave me the tools to be able to make my own decisions about what I am prepared to change. When I compromise I am aware of what I am doing and compromise with knowledge. George discouraged me from checking my weight but I ignored him. December 31, 2018 I weighted 196lbs. I started with George January 9, 2019 and on February 18, 2019 I was 183lbs. That is not a large weight loss but I was not massively overweight. I also went from a solid 34 inch waist size to a loose 32 inch waist. I am somewhere near that weight and shape now all the time, perhaps a bit less. I am having no trouble keeping my weight and shape, I am mostly following George's recommended way of eating, and I have not completely given up craft beer, just less of it and less often (George recommends no alcohol). If you want to lose weight and make better habits the George is an excellent guide to that.

Review Highlights - Fit Body By George

And now that I finished the program, I am still continuing the basic tenants of what George taught me - my eating has changed for good, I enjoy working out, and I feel healthier than I ever had.

I'm 4 classes in at this particular studio and not especially impressed. I can't speak to the…read morefitness classes, only the yoga ones, and I know it's a little less conventional than your typical yoga-only joint which is actually why it gets 3 stars and not 2. Now, I did check this place out on a Groupon because yoga ain't cheap, but I can't see myself returning once it expires. Pros: Close to home. For me, at least. I often have no vehicle so this is an epic win. The instructors are super nice. Zero pretentiousness at all - a wonderful, albeit relatively rare virtue in Vancouver's yoga culture. They are also really fantastic at adding modifications for more advanced students to continue moving forward in their practice. Also a win! Doable for beginners and more challenging for the pros. Mat cleaner for all! Smells soooo good and a lovely provision. Cons: The noise. It's loud. People talk in the hot room. A lot. Maybe i'm a bit of a purist, but I don't love that. To me It's a place for calm. The music is often too loud or inappropriate for a yoga class. Again, totally fine for fitness classes...but not yoga. The floors. They are sort of made of this dense gym mat material. Great if you bail! Terrible for stability. The etiquette. As if the talking in class isn't bad enough, people bring cell phones to their mats. And they DO RING. To my knowledge, this wasn't addressed by the teacher (and the woman did not apologize). People enter the room late. People leave class early. The 15 minute window between classes makes for a rushed experience, effectively defeating the purpose of why I practice (just a personal thing, really). The space. There is none. Literally. Some cubby holes to put your stuff in near the front door and everyone is constantly tripping over each other. Lack of facilities. There is none. There is one bathroom and a staff bathroom. No change rooms. No showers. No lockers. Literally nowhere to change with 15 people coming and another 15 going at all times. I'm all for just the basics, no frills kinda stuff, don't get me wrong. But I am sure glad I only paid Groupon price for this experience. I may be able to overlook everything if this was a "you get what you pay for" situation. But the regular prices are on par with pretty much everywhere else - and everywhere else (I won't name names) tends to provide a much better overall experience.

The room is hotter than average and they like to keep the lights on bright. Parking is limited to…read morestreet parking, but fills up quickly. Most are only from 9:30am, which is the start of their last morning class, so you'll need to factor more time in the morning to look for space. Parking is a bit of an issue as I couldn't find parking and ended up arriving at the door at 9:30am for the 9:30am class, and they had already locked the door. I understand that you don't want to disturb the class, but that didn't stop them from letting someone open the door to the classroom before the end of the class. My recommendation is to have the 9:30am class start at 9:35 so that there's parking. Nice things: they have spray bottles for cleaning your matt.

The Oxygen studio by Gilmore skytrain station has the poorest layout. It's a shame that changing…read moreroom, cubbyholes plus the one and only washroom are inside the studio, where classes are taking place. It's a complete gong show in between two classes, lots of people going in and out, and waiting to use the washroom. That's not a very relaxing, grounding way to start a class. The yoga instructor didn't introduce herself, and didn't ask if anyone is injured. Throughout the class, she didn't provide modification in postures besides chaturanga. Towards the last 10-15 minutes, because people are waiting for next class outside, the wind down and savasana portion was getting pretty loud, definitely not how I want to end a class.

It's also really convenient with a punch pass so I can drop in whenever I want and not commit to an unlimited membership. Freedom Flow (Courtney): Traditional style of yoga that engages your entire body. This class completely changed my previous perception of yoga. Holding the poses challenged my strength, flexibility, and balance. This is probably my absolutely favourite class at Oxygen. I love Courtney's class in particular because her instructions are super clear and her flows are both fun and challenging! I find that my mind is so focused on what I'm doing that the hour just flies by. I always leave feeling much more positive than when I came in. Fast and Furious (Courtney): Intense fitness class that involves weights, bands, and a pilates ball. This workout is great when you want to incorporate more cardio moves and push your limits! -- This class always fills up, so make sure you book your spot in advance on the Mindbody app. Bootcamp Fusion (Carla): Circuit class (about 20 stations) incorporating HIIT cardio, weights, and body weight exercises. Love this class because she plays fun and current music. -- No yoga mat required I encourage everyone to switch up their workouts by trying out some classes at oxygen! You can try their newbie promo ($10 for 1 week unlimited) and see if these types of workouts suit your lifestyle :)
