They have a body comp machine that you can access for free with purchase of a package or another deal which is a cool perk. I've done the DriTri (really fun but challenging workout whey they have vendors, prizes and lots of cheering). They do it once a year along with other fun events but it's very welcoming and you don't have to be a member to enroll. You can pay a separate fee to join and get a shirt and medal. Another challenge I've had fun with was the 8 week transformation challenge and you have to go 4x a week at least and they have a board to track your progress with stickers. They do charge if you are a no show so I would just not book if you're not 100% sure. I've never been on a full class so there's most always a spot. It's also nice to not be locked out if your just a few minutes behind so there's always someone at the desk and you can jump in if you miss the start of warmups. The coaches are all friendly and welcoming. My favorite is Kelley! She dances and has great energy as your sweating out the workout. I would recommend a class for sure, try it out and see if it's your vibe. They do good deals sometimes like $5 for 5 classes and others intermittently.

The YMCA is an awesome place to workout. They recently upgraded all of their cardio equipment,…read morethey have numerous classes to take (Yoga, Pilates, Boot Camp, etc), great lifting equipment, full basketball courts, racquetball court, great staff and the option for indoor and/or outdoor pool access with your membership (at an additional cost). Their prices are very reasonable as well. I paid $636.65 (tax included) for a yearly family membership with the indoor pool option, which included two free months (New Years Resolution rate). Before you say, "Whooooah, that seems expensive!!", understand this price comes out to be only $1.498 per day (at 14 Months/425 days). Now divide that by the number of family members you have and it really becomes apparent how economical it really is. Just for kicks, compare that price to a larger metropolitan facility in Iowa, such as Prairie Life Fitness in Des Moines at $2.33 a day for an individual month to month membership (NOT including unnecessary and expensive sign-up fees). Living in the Ice Cream Capital of the World and the surrounding area, certainly has it's cost of living advantages. If you want to workout (or workOFF that ice cream weight) there are also three large economically priced workout facilities to choose from: 24 Hour Fitness on Hwy 75, The Body Shop on Central Ave. and the YMCA on 12th St. The 24 Hour Fitness and The Body Shop facilities definitely have a clear advantage over the YMCA if you can't workout during the day - they have better hours. 24 Hour Fitness and The Body Shop are open all hours of the day (including holidays), compared to the YMCA at 5 AM to 10 PM Monday through Thursday, 5 AM to 8 PM Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM Saturday and 1 PM to 5 PM on Sunday. Although I have not researched the cost of 24 Hour Fitness, compare the YMCA's Family Membership cost with The Body Shop's (for the same promo period as the YMCA). The Body Shop's Family Membership is $577.16 (tax included) for thirteen months for the cost of twelve ($1.461 per day). However given the number of additional amenities included with the YMCA membership (indoor pool, showers, courts, classes, etc) for only about $59.50 more than The Body Shop's, the Y's membership benefits simply outweigh The Body Shop's hands down.

When you enroll, they rush you through the process and make it seem like you're just paying for the month you want. What they don't tell you is: Your first month A full extra month when you cancel (30-day notice) An annual gym fee By the time you realize it, they blame you for "not knowing," even though the staff never explains any of this during sign-up. And that's only the beginning. My family canceled a membership in person, exactly as instructed, and were told we would be charged one final month, which we accepted. Instead, the cancellation was never submitted correctly, and Crunch charged another month anyway. When I went in to fix THEIR mistake, the front desk employee spoke down to me ("Not sure, bud") and tried to shift blame. The Director of Personal Training contradicted himself multiple times (all recorded), denied statements he made minutes earlier, and even brought up his personal faith while trying to justify how he handled the situation--which was completely unprofessional. He also tried to push through a new cancellation that would've forced yet another charge. Multiple employees admitted they didn't know basic policies, didn't understand how other departments worked, and didn't even know their own General Manager's schedule. Every person gave different information. The most shocking part? The General Manager later made a false accusation that I made her female staff uncomfortable--an accusation completely disproven by recorded conversations where I remained calm and respectful. This felt retaliatory, especially after we repeatedly requested written confirmation they kept avoiding. To be clear, this review is NOT about the money. This is about a business: that withholds key billing information during sign-up that misinforms customers and contradicts itself constantly that fails to take responsibility for staff mistakes that retaliates when customers push for accountability No one should have to record conversations just to get straight answers. There are plenty of gyms in Sioux Falls--choose one that treats people honestly and professionally.

Dakota Budokan an outstanding Judo dojo. There is a generous offering of class times for children…read moreand adults, and a very inexpensive monthly membership allows you to attend as many of these as you want (including classes in Japanese Jiu Jitsu, and Karate). The dojo is modestly sized and clean. Everyone -senseis, students, and parents, are warm and welcoming. The style of Judo taught here is best described as freestyle. Practice is a roughly equal mix of standing throws (nagi waza), and ground-based submission grappling (newaza). Most Judo dojos focus heavily -if not exclusively, on nagi waza, which is great if you want to compete in Olympic-rules judo. DB's balanced approach keeps class from getting stale, and provides a superior education in self-defense, as you will become equally comfortable standing or on the ground. I write this review from two perspectives: as the father of three grade-school boys, and as an adult student with prior martial arts experience. FOR PARENTS SEEKING TO ENROLL CHILDREN: My children have attended for two years. They are tired but happy by the end of class. It's a nice mix of cardio, stretching, and strength training, followed by drills on specific techniques. The lesson usually ends in sessions of randori (sparring, or live-wrestling), which despite being the most exhausting, is the most eagerly anticipated segment. Both senseis are exceptional with kids (one is an elementary school teacher), and the kids adore them. The mood is fun but disciplined. Classes may occasionally open with a rowdy game of tag, but when the sensei requests that the kids line up and be quiet, the kids learn to comply, as extra push-ups or the occasional time out will follow commands that go unheeded. If you are not okay with disciplining your offspring, this is not the dojo for you. Advancement through belt ranks is slow. This is a good thing, as Judo requires a lengthy period of study and refinement to achieve mastery. There are no 12 year-old black belts here. The reward lies in realizing that the techniques they have learned actually work against an actively resisting opponent. Submissions are not taught to children until they are suitably mature (at the sensei's discretion) in the interest of personal and public safety. If your child is a wrestler, there is no better activity to enroll them in than Judo. It explores a plethora of techniques that get little to no attention in school wrestling programs, and it is done in an environment that offers more one-on-one time with the instructors -and in my opinion, under a lot less pressure than you find in most wrestling programs. This gives the child a place to continue learning and to stay in shape without feeling like they are in a year-round meat-grinder. FOR ADULTS SEEKING TRAINING: An hour of grappling here is an extremely intense workout; I would put it well above anything else you could do for exercise this side of distance running or crossfit (and I promise you that throwing someone over your shoulder is way more fun and satisfying than box jumping). Students hail from a diverse range of backgrounds, but they all share the same goals: learn and practice the art, and take good care of their training partners. The competition is brisk in randori. No one is going to let you win, which makes it all the more satisfying when you do. There is no maliciousness among the students, even in the toughest of matches. Like any other vigorous sport, injuries can happen, but they are never intentional, nor accidental as the result of recklessness. This is a very safe place to train hard. The quality of the instruction here is second to none. Sensei Walker's quiet and humble disposition belies his encyclopedic knowledge of the art. He is the dojo's owner, and is present to teach and participate in most classes. Sensei Dang studied for many years under Sensei Walker, and yet his teaching approach differs substantially from his mentor's, providing additional breadth and interest in instruction. You will come away from a class with something new every time you attend, regardless of who is teaching. One of the most unique aspects to training here is that the instructors will frequently participate in randori with their students. I cannot emphasize enough how incredible this is as a student. The majority of martial arts studios are run by senseis who are knowledgeable, but teach only as a third-party non-combatant. To be personally defeated by your instructor, who will then immediately teach you the technique he used, or identify the flaw in your game that he exploited, is an immeasurably beneficial resource in advancing one's understanding of the art. It is one of many reasons that I train here, but it is also one of my favorites. If you are looking for excellent instruction, healthy competition, a mentally engaging 2000 calorie workout, good friends, or a good time, you will find them all at Dakota Budokan.

As a side benefit the fitness I get from judo is excellent and much more functional than other programs. Due to a busy schedule and life events I am unable to attend as often as I have in the past but the class schedule allows several options. Also the more advanced students accommodate to different skill levels. So newcomers of all levels are welcome. I have 2 daughters (aged 11 and 9) that have recently began training here also. I initially made them so they can learn a method of self defense. It turns out they love it and can't wait to go to class. The instructors are great with kids. I would highly recommend this school for any child.
