This place has been here for as long as I can remember, and for several decades before that. I…read morewould imagine, that in today's marketplace, the limited size of the store might have people calling this a convenience store. I'll give you that, after all, it is conveniently located just a block off US 45, but for many area residents, this is their go-to grocery outlet. It's been a general store mainstay in "uptown" Elcho for well over 100 years. There are photos over the entrance doors that show Elcho in its halcyon days, this store next to the bank and the hotel known as The Muskie Inn. There's even a photo of the beautiful old depot, across the street, that served passengers on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway's Ashland Division. North Trail Store retains it's old time flavor with the same squeaky, highly polished hardwood floors my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother trod upon and the store still carries many of the same products they did when Grandma and I came here to do her weekly grocery shopping. In the early days of the automobile, probably 100 years ago, the store even had gas pumps out on the curb. But in today's modern world, they still have fresh meats and everything you need as you head out to the cottage or campground from here. Charcoal, chips, staples, soda and don't forget the beer! It's all here! The C&NW tracks, the beautiful old depot and the Muskie Inn are long gone, but the North Trail Store carries on. There's even a gift shop with just the right souvenir of your trip to the north woods. Stop in the next time you're passing through Elcho on your way to Upnorth. In fact, if you're northbound, it's even on the correct side of 45 to slide back into traffic. Check it out!

(I'd give 6 stars if I could)…read more Today (Thursday the 23rd, around 7:15pm), I had one of those rare experiences that reminds you what real customer care is supposed to feel like. I'm up north away from my regular doctor and was recently diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. While shopping at Walmart in Antigo, I asked their pharmacy if they carried any type of support belt. They told me it was online only--but importantly, they pointed me to Lakeside Pharmacy and Grocery. That recommendation turned out to be a gift. I called Lakeside right from the Walmart parking lot and was greeted by Ann, whose voice alone set the tone--friendly, patient, and genuinely helpful. I explained what I was looking for, and without hesitation, she offered to go check in the back, bring an option up front, and have it waiting for me when I arrived. And she did exactly that. When I walked in, I was welcomed immediately and also met Brianna, who was also kind and attentive. Both Ann and Brianna made what could have been a frustrating situation feel easy, personal, and cared for. What stood out most was the sincerity. They spoke so highly of the owner, Pat, who has been serving the community for decades (25+ years from what I understand). That kind of pride in leadership--and the way it shows up through the staff--is something you just don't see very often anymore. In a world that feels increasingly automated and impersonal, Lakeside Pharmacy is the opposite. It's warm, it's genuine, and they truly care about the people who walk through their doors. This was my first visit--but absolutely not my last. If you're anywhere near Antigo, it is well worth going a block or two off the beaten path to experience what a hometown business should feel like. Thank you, Ann, Brianna, and Pat. You made a difference today. Sincerely, Rock E

I have also never run into a problem on the pharmacy side. The bakery goods at Lakeside are delicious, and the meat is higher quality than what you can get at the bigger chain stores. While I myself do not drink alcohol, I've heard my dad praise their selection a few times now; apparently they have some stuff that's hard to find and at a reasonable price. For the more regular groceries, their selection includes a little variety of most things you might need, although their size limits them from more niche goods (although there is some of these as well) or extreme variety. It's also a local business, if you're a person who supports those.
