We liked that they are non-profit and came recommended by the assisted living place our family member was in. The care was fine. The only glitch was a communication error for the holiday and told that someone would show up when in fact that was wrong information. That's the unfortunate thing we found with hospitals too --- they are limited in staff on holiday and sometimes that's the case on weekends. One thing we thought (given they provide a booklet and section for this) is that it should be signed and dated every time someone from their organization showed up. We were told it wouldn't happen and it didn't. We only had our family member on hospice for one week.

I hear they used to be great but they are not anymore, likely after things were taken over from "Hospice By the Bay" to "By the Bay Health". They pretty much do the minimum, are difficult to get ahold of a majority of the time, scheduling is challenging; they screw up communication between themselves and with the client and don't show when they say... their follow-up is very shoddy... I think they've just become too busy for their own good or anyone else's and honestly have lost sight of how important it is to us that they simply CARE. They caused me too much frustration to offer much relief. Should not be my job to make sure they do their job. That is not helpful to me at all. The only saving grace in my experience is Rachel, the social worker assigned to my dad's case-- and nurse Stephanie! My father has only days left now after a sudden and his most significant decline, and I've not heard from the spiritual counselor or heard back from the director for days. I thought hospice offers support for these times. I only feel they're merely inconvenienced by their clients-- at least that is my experience. I would research smaller hospice choices and interview them first. End of life support for loved ones should not involve the frustrations I have had to endure, not to mention my father's.

I looked at so many board and care homes and could not find a place that I liked until I found Gentle Home Care in San Rafael on Nova Albion Way (415)499-1632. Luckily they had an opening and I moved heaven and earth to get him in there because I could see right away how caring they were. The place was spotless and lovely and they made beautiful homemade healthy meals. Tom was there 5 years.I am convinced he couldn't have received better care anywhere else. I am eternally grateful. Now I just spoke to the owner who shares my birthday..she called me to wish me a happy birthday. She told me they currently have 1 opening. If you are looking for this kind of care for a loved one, don't hesitate to call them. They usually have a long waiting list. It is a difficult decision but when I put my husband there I knew it was for the best. I simply could not have provided him with the specialized care he received at Gentle Home Care.

The team is so dedicated, and they worked with us at each stage of his time there, leading with compassion. I truly believe they cared for my Dad as a person, even when he was difficult. We chose Heartland for my 98 year old dad who was living in a nursing home setting. The nurse we…read morewere assigned was very nice, but that is the end of positive statements about this company. Visits were unpredictable, calls sporadic and orders for supplies a complete nightmare. There was always the feeling that staff would drop in for a few minutes to be able to bill Medicare. It was very apparent that this was a FOR PROFIT outfit. The worst part was how they totally let us down when my dad was actively dying. The nurse (not his regular one) had to leave because her shift was over. No one else was sent to help us deal with this difficult experience. Afterwards we heard NOTHING from Heartland management even after making our feelings known to the regular nurse. CHOSE ANOTHER COMPANY FOR HOSPICE.

Kaiser must give you a referral to all hospice groups in your area. Ten minutes later I get a call from an Heartland agent who wants to come immediately and sign my husband and I up for Heartland Hospice. I ask what services will be provided and he states an RN will come every two weeks. I ask about bathing and he states they will teach me how to do it. After a few more questions with even more unsatisfactory answers, I actually say "pardon me, but what benefit is Hospice to me if I continue to try to do it all myself?". His reply is they "manage pain", not an issue in our case. No thanks. Weeks go by and we continue to provide daily care as best we can as a family until a crisis puts us in the ER. They hear our unsatisfactory connection with Heartland and suggest Hospice by the Bay, stating it is imperative we get Hospice help to assist in this process. Hospice by the Bay came immediately, delivered drugs to the house that night, provided equipment to ease his care and both an RN, social worker and, even a health aide to bathe him, all showed up the next day. Turns out Heartland is a FOR PROFIT hospice run be a national health group. They less they do the more they get to keep from the Medicare daily stipend for hospice patients. Hospice by the Bay is a non profit, aided by volunteers and truly encapsulates the hospice experience. Run for the hills far, far away from Heartland. I can not stress this enough. PS: I notice no bad reviews on Yelp so let's see how long this review stays up. There is also no option to notate a Comments section of their website. Just Google profit vs non profit hospice and you will be amazed and alarmed. The people who were so knowledgeable and supportive of us at the outset are mostly gone now. While I believe the staff is well-intentioned and trying, there is definitely a loss of expertise and skill. Cogir is struggling to hire a new executive director, and the loss of strong leadership is likely contributing to the decline. My Dad still likes living there and we are still hoping a strong ED will come take the reins and get this once excellent place back on track. Until then I cannot make any recommendations either way, and I leave it up to the families to come to Cogir and decide for themselves whether it is a good fit for their loved one.

They…read moremust take issue with the facts as presented by the MarinIJ then because it's simply what was reported. Is the news itself inflammatory? Isn't this relevant to the quality of care? This is Yelp folks. ----- Since Yelp has seen fit to shadow censor my question to the business, (shows with my login but not when someone else is logged in or when nobody is logged in) which actually would have been more discreet I am resorting to a full review to ask this - unless it becomes censored or taken down. This is an open invitation to Cogir to comment on what they've done to rectify the delayed reporting of alleged rape of a resident by Michael Andre Shipe as reported by the MarinIJ in June of 2023 in the link. The article stated "The care home was required to submit a "plan of correction" this week that included staff training in the relevant areas" so certainly it is available at this point in 2024. The article also stated "Ben Levesque, executive vice president of the company, declined to comment in detail on the alleged violations." I would think saying something that is not a generic soundbite assures us that it's a human being that cares rather than a company man. Like many in this industry I find the corporate takeover to be concerned with projecting an image rather than actual care. I suggest all with loved ones look past the facade and hold them to public accountability, I'm sure these companies would rather people forget and not know anything. Needless to say if this ends up being censored it will likely speak volumes about either Yelp and perhaps Cogir as well. Feel free to move it to the question section but this is a serious matter. https://www.marinij.com/2023/06/16/marin-care-home-cited-by-state-over-alleged-rape/?clearUserState=true

When we had questions or concerns, she always responded promptly, even when she was out of the office or home with her baby. Her dedication to her patients is admirable indeed! I know my father, brother and I will miss her now that she is no longer with Hampton Health. And I have no doubt that future patients will be equally fortunate to have Alexis advocate and care for them.
