I only chose to live here because it's decent apartments and affordable. The thing that bothers me is there have been thieves around the buildings taking packages. I pointed out the issue to the management and they didn't care one lady basically was talking to me like I was crazy on the phone because I asked her what she can do. They told me to make a police report which I did.... But of course nothing was done either so I'm just posting this as a warning for future tenants. Get your own cameras and put it outside your door!! And just don't trust anyone ever since I did that nothing has been stolen again but I've seen cops outside a few times so I'm probably not the only one who has reported this. Moral of the story I'm pissed they didn't do a damn thing and it took months later for them to send out an email to atleast warn everyone that there were people out stealing small packages.... the big packages weren't getting stolen but small ones. The buildings around 4112 Lincoln swing aren't locked outside and don't have any cameras that's the shitty part cause a lot of their other properties have locked buildings! Lastly, the maintenance are useless they've been saying they were gonna come in and change air filters I've even put in a maintenance request earlier in the year and they never come. I lived in an apartment owned by first property management for one year, and I was very happy with the service. The urgent repairs were always done in a timely manner, even though I was in a very cheap apartment, only $700 a month. I see that a lot of other people apparently do not believe first property management was helpful or professional, but many of these reviews are old, and every landlord has at least a fair amount of negative reviews in Ames. I'm not trying to be dismissive of other people's experiences, but my experience was not at all like the negative stories posted here. When my apartment flooded over the summer, they did not blame me because it was not my fault, and because I let them know that I would be gone during this time (it was months before I came back and found it flooded). They also agreed to pay me for the days I could not stay in my apartment because it was flooded (about two weeks), they agreed to pay me the utilities that their contractors were using (electricity for running the dehumidifiers, fans, and keeping the lights on), and they allowed me to break my lease. They did all of this in less than three weeks (which was very reasonable, given that the last adjustment I gave them for the payment was about a week two weeks into this three week process). It was expected that they would allow me to break my lease because in my lease, it stated that I could break my lease at any time my apartment was uninhabitable, but it was nice to have landlord that honored the promises that they made in the lease they gave me. Also, they were friendly, understanding, and try their best to handle a noisy neighbor and told me everything I would have to do in order to force them to either quiet down or get thrown out (this was a long process, but it would have been a lengthy, tedious experience anywhere given the laws that protect tenants). I would recommend this company to anybody looking to find a place to live in Ames. read more

Do not rent here if you want to feel safe. The management is not interested in helping you. I have been a tenant with FPM for around four years and until this incident did not have any major complaints. However, I recently contacted the office with a concern about a neighbor who was behaving in a harassing manner toward me. The neighbor had not yet broken any laws, and I understood that FPM would likely not be able to do anything about him---I just wanted a record of it before anything escalated. I also mentioned I was worried about telling this individual to leave me alone because he lived in my building, knew my unit number, and I live in an accessible ground floor unit, so I was afraid of possible retaliation. I received a call back from a man whose name started with an M, possibly Michael or Mitchell. He was extremely dismissive of my concerns. He was very eager to talk over me, and even made the assumption that I had previously been seeing this man and had just decided I didn't like him anymore, and that I simply needed to tell him to leave me alone. When I reiterated I was worried about the repercussions of doing so, he again brushed me off and told me to go to the police, but that they wouldn't do anything if this man hadn't broken the law yet. I understand that there was little FPM could have done for me in this situation, and that's fine. The manner in which I was treated was completely unacceptable. I was blamed for feeling afraid, treated unprofessionally, and more or less told that the situation was my fault. I will not be continuing my lease after my current one expires due to this incident. Furthermore I would strongly encourage anyone, especially parents looking for housing for their incoming college students, to stay away from First Property Management. read more

Very friendly front office. Always happy to help! As for the apartments, they are very affordable for the amount of space you're getting. The kitchen & living room is quite large, so you don't have to worry about squeezing by to make your food. They are also very close to campus, especially the engineering & design buildings (the design building is across the street). I have lived with them for one full year and then decided to sublease... they have made the process an absolute nightmare from the beginning. They will make promises to you that they wont keep because they don't communicate with each other or keep accurate notes on your paperwork. Quite literally, every. single. time. I had to communicate with them whether via phone or email, they told me an entirely different answer to a question I had already asked. They are unwelcoming and when you refute anything they say, they will always insist that you are wrong and nothing is their fault. Something wrong with the building? Go tell them. It happens again. Go tell them. It happens again. Go ask if they did anything the first time? No, of course not. They will tell you to call them, then when you call them they will say "No, we need you to email us." Then, they will say a fee is waived. Nope, they will try to make you pay the fee the next time you talk to them. Is this my responsibility or the responsibility of someone else? "It's not your responsibility." I come back, "where is this, it's your responsibility!". Absolutely mind-numbingly frustrating. I do not recommend them to anyone. I have never written a negative review about any business, nor have I felt the need to lose my temper when speaking about a business or professional matter. 1) Pay attention: their lease agreement requires you to have the roommates signatures to sublease your room and they don't care if it's un-reasonable reasons like because it's a boy/ it's a girl (which violates fair housing act). 2) They don't approach customers. They know we are students and we need a place so they treat us like we are not worth their time. Please don't support this business unless you want to encourage the way they treat fellow students. 3) They said they would run back ground check: that's a lie. They only care to get the lease done although later I figured out one of my roommates couldn't afford her rent in the past (in debt with a thousand dollars in her previous rental and got kicked out from another property before that) so I asked them about it and they said they already approved her so they couldn't do anything about it. (But the lease bounds all the tenants in apartment so 1 person is late in rent the others are held responsible, too). 4) They expect you to pay rent on time and charge you fine if you are late (I paid on the first of August and today, the second time, after got confirmation on phone that it would be ready today, when I came into their office they said they didn't have any keys ready for me and that my roommate already took my keys. I don't care if my roommates have my keys they are supposed to give me my keys since I pay them rent and the lady at front desk said it wasn't their fault- making me taking cab 2 times back and forth from Altoona to Ames back and forth with no keys- and that it was roommates issues and they don't care and I said how was it roommate issue I gave them money I expected to have keys from them not my roommates/ and I have 2 roommates I reached out 1 of them said they didn't have mine and the other one is out of country for personal reasons and she didn't tell me anything). 4) The lady in the front desk will try to intimidate you by not admitting the company's fault and say sorry to you but will make it sounds like your fault instead. She was like "oh it wasn't me who gave her the keys" and "it wasn't me who talked to you on the phone told you to come today". I DON'T CARE. You are talking as a company's representative and you don't value your customers and you don't listen you should be fired for irresponsible. You could have said "Oh I'm really sorry that happened we would try to make the keys right away it's our fault" but nope. No apology at all although I already explained to her how it is the company's fault. She expected me to use my roommates keys and no- she won't be home the time I am home so don't tell me to do ridiculous things. THANK YOU. 5) I asked to talk to a manager and she said there was none of them there but Monday. I expect to be able to talk to a manager on a normal working business day not to deal with rude employees and I can't do nothing about it right then and there. read more

I'm the parent to three Iowa State students. My oldest son lived in two apartments during his time at ISU, and my middle son has just moved into a First Property Management apartment on July 1. This is my third property management experience in Ames. I've been VERY impressed with how easy they are to work with, how responsive they are to questions AND fixing the things that we asked in the apartment. Chelsi in the office is outstanding! That said, I also had a situation where we had to call over the weekend to ask a question. For anyone looking to move into a apartment in the Ames area I would recommend anywhere else but First Property Management. The rent is way to high for getting the most basic apartment in Iowa but the worst experience we had living here was that they would show our apartment to random people multiple times in a week even though we were still living in the apartment paying the rent. Management treated us horribly every time we called to make a complaint. In all honesty I would rather be living in a card board box under a bridge then to live in any of apartments that are owned by First Property Management. You know how in life you look back on the mistakes you've made.... in a couple months I will be looking back and realizing renting from First Property Management in Ames Iowa was one of the biggest mistakes I've made. There's some lady at the front desk when I go to pay my rent that is super mean even when you're bringing her money. First Property Management is a horrible company. Their only interest is to jack the prices up on everything at the cost of previous existing tenants. They cannot keep the apartment area clean either, there are currently piles of trash laying throughout the parking lot, it's very disgusting. My recommendation is don't get caught in their games and find somewhere else to live. read more
