So... 4.5-stars for the actual Rockville Ice Arena (RIA), but really the reason I feel compelled to…read morewrite a review is to warn figure skaters away from the East Coast Pro Shop inside the Arena, which deserves no stars. If you have figure skates, do NOT get your skates sharpened here, no matter how desperate you are and how much this shop claims to sharpen figure skates 'all the time.' They did such a poor job on my sharpening (which, as a beginner, I unfortunately just chalked up to me struggling with newly sharpened skates rather than a botched job) that months later the sharpener at the new shop I went to (Replay Sports - Rockville) was exasperated; going out of his way to comment on just how bad the previous sharpening was (without me even mentioning my struggles). He ended up having to shave down the whole blade to fix it. Lo-and-behold, I had 0 struggles after this sharpening. To top it off, the Pro Shop charged $24, which was not mentioned prior to them sharpening the skates. I didn't doublecheck the price since a RIA employee had already told me three days earlier it was ~$12. When I mentioned the discrepancy at checkout, they said, 'Well, these are figure skates, not hockey skates.' Huh? For reference, I just have standard Mark IV blades... Despite their shop, I can't in good faith give the RIA arena any less than 4 stars, because overall the rinks are really nice, and I've had excellent experiences with the employees and adult group lessons here. I agree with other reviewers that the weekend sessions are insanely busy and should be avoided, but that's true for really any rink in this area. Yes, their weekday public skate sessions are at inconvenient times (usually 12-2pm, MWF), but as result, these sessions are sometimes virtually empty - so depending on your work schedule, this can be a real benefit.

There were multiple groups of 5+ teens/tweens holding hands, blocking anyone from passing by them. Occasionally they would slingshot someone off of their chain of people into the rest of the ice skaters around them. There were also skaters passing by so quickly my hair was whipping in the wind as they flew by. I'm all for speed, but they kept coming so close to me I thought they were going to take me out. On top of that, there were multiple spills and children skating sideways. The workers looked like high schoolers and did not appear to be concerned by the number of people on the ice or the big groups of people linking hands. The skates were also lower quality, and they offered no half sizes. My advice is go at non-peak times and bring your own skates. If you check in on yelp when you arrive, there is a coupon for a hat or gloves.

I turned around and walked right out of there without investigating further. The vibes were off in that bathroom, I can tell you that much. They seemed alarmed that I was trying to come in there at all let alone with a four-year-old, even though the bathroom was a public bathroom.... I don't know how this place can call itself a roller skating rink with that horrible floor. The skates were plastic and awful. I really feel ripped off and extremely disappointed. The chairs were disgusting. I washed all of our clothes and coats as soon as we got home. I will never be returning. Such wasted money. In addition there was a DJ playing music and it was so loud. My kids were extremely overstimulated and just yelling by the time we left, then complained of headaches on the car ride home.

Honestly, it's a good spot to host anything from a friend's hangout to a large party. However, I have qualms about coming here again. The work event was a pickleball tournament. Although the space itself is clean, it gets so hot indoors - regardless what activity that you do. Furthermore, we got food catered, and it wasn't the best quality. Although you don't come here for food and drinks, I would recommend other places for that. If you can deal with the heat indoors and want to do a fun activity in DC, I would recommend going here.

With three large ice skating rinks, a small diner, a gym, and super helpful and accommodating staff- you'll be set. I know some of the people who work there and they work their behinds off to make sure everyone has a top-notch experience. The ice is cut several times throughout the day and the hours are expansive. Not too mention, there is a small arcade that will entertain your children if they get bored of ice skating. They continue to do renovations to keep the facilities clean and up to date. In fact, I was there a month ago when they installed a filtered water bottle filler. Come one, come all... except you Tonya Harding: you maybe...not come. One more thing. If you're in need of any hockey gear, they even have a small hockey store inside. It's pretty much a one stop shop for everything ice.

For example: 8 years ago, I decided that I wanted to race in the America's Cup, and proceeded to spend an entire year learning how to sail and competing in regattas before I realized that while I enjoy sailing, what I *REALLY* wanted was a cute nautical outfit. Or even 6 years ago, I decided that I wanted to give up civilization and live out in the woods, become a hermit, and become a much less annoying version of Henry David Thoreau. I bought a ton of camping equipment, nagged my friends into going camping with me, got out to the Shenandoah, and about 2 hours into the camping trip, I was on the phone with the nearest Hyatt, booking a suite because I was *SO DONE* with the bugs and the wilderness and the lack of Wi-Fi. Or even last year - I whined about I was *SURE* that I could take down Lance Armstrong - blindfolded - if only I knew how to ride a bike. So my husband bought me a bike (pink, with a white basket, streamers and stickers all over it...he knows me *so* well). The lesson went well for the first 45 minutes. Then I got cocky and decided to go fast...then *out of the blue* a curb jumps out of *nowhere* and viciously attacks me, unprovoked and with malicious aforethought! I fall, scrape my knee and there ends my dreams of wearing the famed yellow jersey. Which is just as well, because bicycle shorts are *so* unflattering. So, I suppose I don't need to describe what happened when I decided that my life's dream is to really become a world champion figure skater. I mean, if Tonya Harding could do it, well, how hard could it possibly be? That dream lasted for about 30 minutes. Did you know that ice is COLD? And HARD? And COLD?!?! Also, if one can barely stand up straight on skates, one probably shouldn't attempt to do a triple-anything. Just sayin'. Yeah, shortest figure skating career in the entire history of figure skating. However, my quashed dreams of Olympic gold were not the fault of Arc Ice Sports (although, upon reflection, the fault was *obviously* not mine, but of the skates). I've been to Arc before my figure-skating dreams were brutally murdered, as my husband's best friend is on an ice hockey team, and they regularly play here. The rinks all have bleachers which makes watching games (or watching me fall on my butt) easier - but again, it is so frickin' COLD! Someone turn on the heat already! There is a food stand that sells the usual pizza and hotdogs, as well as a mini "arcade" area with some games to keep the kids occupied. The space is *huge* and very well maintained. Not sure if I'll ever give ice skating another try, but if I do, I'll have on body armor, five layers of thermal underwear...and I'll definitely come back to Arc.

The public skate sessions are two hours long for $8, and rentals are $4. Compared to the Capitals Arena in VA, it's really affordable! However, know that if you rent here, the rental skates are pretty worn down and the blades are not sharpened. If you're learning to skate, it may be a better idea to invest in your own beginner skates compared to the rental skates here so you get a real feel of skating and have more safety and security from getting a sprained ankle. It's usually crowded on weekends, especially with kids birthday parties and lessons so expect little kids zooming past you. I went on a random weekend in December 2022 and it wasn't too crazy compared to a different weekend in March 2022. Could be because people have more plans during the holiday season, who knows? tldr; affordable ice rink, but don't rent skates from here. can get crowded, but you also can get lucky. Parking is decent, but again can get crowded. Come early during public skate sessions to give yourself time to tie your skates on tight!

The prices seem WAY more expensive, and they up-charged for the table-balance things. Last year, those were free (and they were penguins - I did like these tables more.). We paid something like $80 for a family of four - admission, skate rental, and two balancers. Also, the skates were extremely oddly designed. I have never seen skates with laces so short before. I couldn't wrap them around the ankle of the boot, and as such they were very loose - so much so that I had to go down two sizes, at which point they were just pinching my feet. My kids also complained that they were too loose and then too tight. Finally, we started very soon after they opened and the rink was already difficult to skate on because of all the marks on it. We didn't see the zamboni until we were leaving, around 11:30. They really needed to use it earlier. I don't think we'll come back here to skate anymore.
