My family has been a member for almost 10 years and we love Beth Haverim Shir Shalom. It is a warm…read morecongregation that is extremely welcoming to everyone. It is a reform temple, and thus services are conducted in that tradition. There is music at every service, organized by our Cantor Perper, who is inspiring and funny at the same time. My family has been lucky enough to have both our sons be prepared for their Bar Mitzvahs here and they have experienced nothing but support and encouragement. There are many cultural and social opportunities as well through this temple. People can participate as little or as much as you like but whenever I attend something, I always feel welcome. Our congregation is filled with people from different parts of NY and NJ but it is truly a "house of friends"-Beth Haverim. Come by anytime and give us a try.

Growing up my family observed holidays and traditions in our home, but we no longer belonged to a…read moretemple. I never went to Hebrew school; when I was 9 I tried to teach it to myself with a workbook. I always felt I was missing something but felt like a fish out of water whenever I attended any other temple. Then my husband and I moved to Mahwah. We initially attended Beth Haverim because it was convenient. I was insistent that our children grow up part of a congregation maybe because I simply didn't. But when we started going, the rabbi and cantor and all the other congregants never made me feel awkward or not as good because of my lack of knowledge. Instead they welcomed me and offered me ways to feel comfortable at services. Services are run in such a way that everyone in the sanctuary knows what is going on--the use of English passages, wonderful music, and story-telling make it all so accessible. My older son had his Bar Mitzvah a few years ago, and the process was intense but so rewarding. My son really grew during the process--spiritually, intellectually as well as his maturity. Cantor Perper and the rest of the staff were absolutely supportive of our family and worked to get the best out of our son. We are now in the process for our younger son as well. Beth Haverim offers so many opportunities to our congregants--no matter your age--through social programs, educational programs, cultural programs and of course through services. If you get a chance, come to one of our services, I think you will enjoy welcoming, warm atmosphere.

My wife and I have been members of Temple Israel of Northern Westchester, a Reform Congregation,…read morefor 16 years. Our two daughters became b'not mitzvah and confirmed here, and they stayed on through Hebrew High School. I have been especially active in Temple life, attend Torah Study weekly, have been the Brotherhood co-president, served on the Board of Trustees some time ago and again for the last three years, on the Building Committee, and I'm now a VP. Admittedly, I'm biased, but for good reason. I can't say enough how warm and welcoming this Temple community is, starting with our incredible Rabbi Jaech, Cantor Ellerin, Director of CJL (Center for Jewish Learning) Guy Felixbrodt, musical director Eddie Pleasant, teachers, Temple leadership, office and custodial staff, many, many volunteers, Youth Group, and of course, congregants. We have an amazing music program including award winning accompanist Dina Pruzhansky, several bands, adult and teen choirs. Shabbat and High Holy Days services are very moving and engaging, and the choir is amazing. There is an extremely active Brotherhood and Sisterhood, Social Justice and Adult Education committees. The Brotherhood organizes Midnight Runs during the cold months. Adult learning is vitally important, and there are many educational programs, during the day, evening and Shabbat. Our location is quite beautiful, tucked away on the top of Mt. Airy. The physical environment within the Temple building is not ostentatious, but comfortable and inviting, with a newly renovated Community Room. I strongly encourage anyone looking for comfort in Judaism to join us on a Friday night, or at any of our programs. Speak with Rabbi Jaech- she is uniquely able to connect to young children, teens, and adults of all ages, she is a great and compassionate leader, and a wonderful teacher. The teachers know and care for each child individually and enrichment programs ensure that the children are exposed to a variety of experiences from nature to culture, art, music and lots of PLAY. An emphasis on socialization gives kids the tools they need to interact with other children effectively. I would highly recommend this program.
