Service began with an amazing group of musicians who were truly praising God. Offered a breakout service for younger children. The sermon/message was great. First of all the role of greeting visitors appears to be assigned to the greeters and pastor. Expect polite nods from everyone else. The music was professional and soothing. The readings helped me put the experiences of my week in perspective. The sermon was both intellectually and emotionally engaging for me, providing a mix of philosophical underpinnings and illustrative real-life stories. This is not typical of a UU sermon so this might not be a regular feature of sermons at this church. Afterwards at coffee hour, people gathered in lively conversation. My I-am-sort-of-lost-here look did not work to get me into any of these circles. However, most of the little exchanges were polite and friendly. Finally, I found the welcome table. Had a great conversation and was introduced to other people. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. I like to me able to observe before meeting people, so this formal approach to visitors worked for me. I plan to return to enjoy a few of the many activities offered to adults.

This weekend we stopped in at The First Congregational Church of Hatfield for their yearly…read moreChristmas craft fair. When we entered the building we were warmly greeted by their parishioners who gave us information on the different rooms. The craft fair overall was great, and every year we visit we end up buying a new building for our winter village. When it come to the service at this congregation, the church itself is gorgeous and the mass is amazing. We have come to mass here in the past and we have enjoyed how warm the community of parishioners are, especially for visitors. In the end, this is a great parish to not only attend masses, but to also spend time with their parishioners when they hold their community events. Their craft fair is great and we will continue to come every year!

So back in my Catholic period (like birth to age 17-18 or so), I used to come here for Mass. It's…read moreactually quite the nice church from the aesthetics perspective: you've got the front area perfectly set up to put in a Nativity scene or a tree, the Stations of the Cross are set up around the Church, and there's the balcony where the choir can go to sing from. (Funny side story: I used to think that the choir balcony was Heaven, and that when I died, I would end up singing in the choir up there for all eternity... probably explains why I've lapsed... I'm not much of a singer, so that wouldn't be much of a fun eternity.) Also, the priests here were cool. Most notable would be the late Msgr. Devine, who was a really nice guy. He'd come by the CVS where I worked, and he knew who I was, so that was cool. There was also that one priest they had for awhile who sang a lot and looked like Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was cool too. I'm not a big fan of much of what the church teaches, but for the most part, St. Mary's did have a small part in forming the me I am today (about 90% of the credit goes to my parents, 5% to PBS, and the rest to the Church, among others.). Do I follow everything? No. I'm pro-choice and I think gays should be able to marry. But on the whole "help others" thing (you know, the part that involved that guy who wandered around and gave people food and raised them from the dead and all that), they did a good job. Also, as an architectural thing, it's a cool place as well.
