When I needed a cab last week, I googled cabs in Hoddesdon and just dialed the first listing that stood out to me. And I got Phil at Tower Taxis. Phil is prompt and Phil is friendly. Both are excellent qualities in a cabbie. But the best thing about Phil is the prices. I found him to be slightly lower than other local services. On one occasion Phil quoted me a price for a trip out of town. When he actually took me there the next day, he found himself to be WAY off the mark--about £20! Instead of being an ass and charging me what the meter said, he allowed me to pay what he quoted the night before. I found this very refreshing as I've been screwed over by cabbies in the past (yeah, I'm talking to YOU All American Taxis in Chicago). Thanks, Phil. I'll be ringing you up again soon!

So, I phone up a local cab (LOCAL, mind you, from the same town) from the train station in the hopes of getting a lift the two miles to my home. And the cabbie said no. It's two minutes away, he said. You can easily walk that, he said. Seriously? Who does that? Who turns down money like that? What are cabs for if not taking you somewhere when it's difficult for you to get there on your own? I know it wasn't far (but certainly a lot farther than two minutes away), but it was literally POURING RAIN and I was willing to give a damn good tip. Instead, I wobbled slowly home in my non-sensible shoes and arrived home soaking wet and pretty pissed off. I'm usually all for supporting local businesses but this is definitely one I will never phone again.

I asked him to return in an hour and to meet me at the pub across the road. I was in a job interview and the employer happened to be extremely chatty and I was there well over an hour and wasn't able to let the cabbie know I was running late. He went to the pub to collect me and when I didn't show up, he came back to the office building where I was dropped off and patiently waited for me to come out. And when I finally did, he was just as cheerful as before. He could have easily left since I was so late and couldn't reply to his text, or at the least, started the meter up while he was waiting, but he did neither. After bad experiences with other taxi services, it was refreshing to find one so helpful.
