I laughed tonight and I cried tonight..."Steel Magnolias" is running at the playhouse until October 2, 2022, I believe. Tucked away in Atlantic Highlands on an ordinary Main Street USA you will find a local gem. The playhouse is celebrating it's 25th year. Presenting a new play for each month of each of these twenty five years! Talented actors and directors and crew present one heck of a production each month. The theater has received many Perry Awards for their productions. I have just seen this past week, Sin Sex and The CIA. Directed by Perry Award winning director Barry Prag. My friends brought a bottle of wine as the have a BYOB policy. We were warmly welcomed and it was explained we could each help ourselves to cake. So many to choose from, I picked the rich chocolate cake. Coffee was already at the table for us to serve ourselves. However, decafe and tea both regular and decaf are available and are served to you. Water is available too. At intermission we could help ourselves to soda, regular or diet. The play was so much fun. It s a farce so it pokes fun and takes the comedy to extreme. There are slap stick elements as well as just good clean fun. The play is witty and well performed. I hope you get to see it. It runs through July 26. 2014. Last month we saw Hit The Road Jack, about a driving school...very funny. New month, Aug, we will return to see Bus Stop. The productions haven t disappointed us yet. The price is so cheap for what you get...live theater and dessert. $22 general admit and thurs night and Sunday matinee $18 for seniors...you might be proofed! Lol Also if you sign up for the mailing list there are other discounts. Right now they have a special you receive through the mailing list $30 for two tickets on certain days. There is also a coupon in the Entertainment Book. Check them out on tripadvisor, Facebook and their web site. One thing make sure you do is make a reservation 732-291-7552. Each director is different in how they present the play and relate to the audience. We especially like to see a play that Mr Prag directs as there are always giveaways and additional fun during intermission. Great performance tonight. The deadly undeparted was unreal. Super fun slap stick comedy. The cast seemed so in sync. Definitely a super fun night for all ages and the entire family. And I'm not just saying that because I am a 7th degree rogue. Support community theater everyone. read more

We went to the children's puppet show (saturday's at 2:30 pm) with our three year old niece and had a lovely afternoon. The people are friendly, and even led the children in some christmas carols between shows (snow queen and the night before christmas). It was an adorable show, and the kids loved it. Must try for some old school, unplugged kids entertainment. We are looking forward to checking out the adult's dessert theatre as well. read more

We went to see Break a Leg on Broadway last night, the show's opening night. They perform pieces from a lot of Broadway shows, including, but not limited to, Guys and Dolls, Godspell, Beautiful, West Side Story, Pippin, In the Heights, The King and I, and Hamilton. Each and EVERY one of the performers in the show could be dropped on any stage on Broadway and fit in perfectly, they are THAT talented. It is one thing to spend well north of a hundred dollars to be blown away at a B'way show; it is completely another thing to spend only twenty-two dollars and be amazed! The thing about First Avenue, though, is that most of the shows they put on (twelve a year) are THAT good. They choose classics, or plays that are more recent but have been successful on Broadway, like The Little Foxes, The Gin Game, Proof, and Art. Every October they put on something related to Halloween (best choices are ones like Wait Until Dark), and they play a lot of comedies, most of which are very funny. This is a terrific community theatre, one that everyone on or near the Jersey shore should try - HIGHLY recommend! read more

I went to see cheaper by the dozen and it was amazing. The cake they offered tasted delicious. The actors were great! The person who played Larry was a wonderful actor. He looked as if he was in love with Anne the whole show. The man who played the father was a wonderful actor. The way he spoke made me believe he was a father of 12. The woman who played the mother was also very good. I loved the way she herded the children in act 3. Anne was absolutely lovely. The actress was amazing. She was always in character. The kid who played Frank is a good actor. The girl who played Ernestine was hilarious, especially when impersonating the mother. The man who played Doctor Burton was great. I almost thought he was a real doctor! Mrs. Fitzgerald was so funny. Bill was amazing with his remarks about Anne and Larry holding hands. Jackie was very adorable. Joe Scales was hilarious and always in character. I loved when he shouted his cheer and his interaction with the father. The First Avenue Playhouse is a wonderful place with amazing shows. I'll definitely be coming back to see another show. read more
