I came here for the first time because it was local and had good reviews. I was bringing in my bike, which I've had since 1997, for a tune up. I explained that I wanted new handlebar grips after tuning it up. They said most people ask for new pedals too and I said "no I don't want that". I have had this bike most of my life and it's special to me to keep it as close to the way it was when my dad bought it for me in 7th grade. Unless something is broken I want to keep it the way it was. I was quoted $100 for the tune up and $40 for the handlebars. The guys were super nice and I was excited. I return a week later and am asked to pay about double the amount of the quote. I question that and I'm told I needed new brakes and they replaced the pedals I asked them not to replace. I think businesses should call you and be sure it's ok to do work outside of the scope of what you asked for and price you were quoted. This was all really out of budget for me and I had explained I am a very casual rider and this bike is old and nothing expensive. He asked if I wanted the old pedals put back on and it taken off the bill. Of course I do. So now I'm waiting while that gets done which is just awkward and shouldn't have happened. Undependable, unresponsive and fails to deliver on promises. We had been good customers, having our bikes serviced each year by Firehouse. This year not only did Mike promise to pick-up our bikes a few times and never showed, but when I went back to ask him why, he said "I have you on my list." TL:DR. Great service! No up-charge attempts on parts. Mike does everything to make the parts you have work. If he can't, he'll offer options that are very reasonable for your bike. He's not gonna sell you a $800 dollar de-railer for a $600 bike. Most important FHC will deliver the bike the way YOU want it not the way they think it should be. Story time! I bought a Trek Liquid 30 Mountain bike 2005 to ride on Palm Desert down hill trip. Well as time and life moved on the bike got hung up and hasn't been touched in 10 years. I've attempted to take it to other bike shops to get it tuned up to attempt to ride again. The gears had started jumping when I placed any type of torque on the pedals. I've watched at least 17 hours of Youtube videos to attempt it myself and could not figure out the problem either. All the other shops that I've taken it too told me "Yep, it's ready to go! Here's the $150.00 price tag." And nothing. Nothing was really repaired aside from the obvious simple defects. Read: aired the tires, bleed the brakes. No one touched the gears aside from cycling them through on the rack. It killed any motivation I had to continue riding. Fast forward ten years later, my daughter learned how to ride. One day getting her bike out she turns to me and said "Daddy, I wish you had a bike to ride with me." I turned back to the shed where the my Trek had been stored with a new determination! I tried bike shops in Laurence, Pennington. Neither solved the problem. Enter, Firehouse Cycles. I called Mike up and gave him a list of details I wanted him to address. He said bring it in, I'll take a look and have it back in 10 days. Those 10 days were like an eternity to a 5 year old, but the result was worth more than anything. Mike suggested a couple upgrades that would make it more comfortable to ride on the street. Each offer was sensible for what I wanted. I was so comfortable with his suggestions, I ended up dropping an extra $600 adjusting and tuning my bike to what it is now. I had one the most unprofessional experiences at Firehouse Cycles and with the owner. I brought in a bike for tire/gear issue . I needed it back in time for vacation. I explained at dropoff that the bike was an inexpensive $100 bike that I did not want to spend more than the bike was worth on the repair. When we went in for pickup, the cost was well over the price of purchasing a new bike. When I explained this to the owner he became irate and stormed out of his shop telling one of his young employees to handle my payment and transaction. The owner stormed out of the shop, got on his bike and proceeded to ride around the parking lot refusing to address the situation professionally. When I went to the back with the young employee to get my bike it turns out that my bike was never worked on and they had worked on someone else's bike instead. Not only was the owner unprofessional and rude, but he put his young employees in a very uncomfortable situation that he should have dealt with himself. read more

Let me start by saying that it is rare for me to write a review. I am in the service industry and a tough grader when it comes to someone "doing their job" in my eyes. Given the experience I had yesterday with Mike, the owner, I had to make the time to write a review about FH cycles. I will start by saying that I am from CT and randomly reached out to Mike to see if he had a specific bike that I have been looking for (months of looking and 20 wait lists). As you know you can't get bikes easily and I was told by many including the bike company that I shouldn't expect it until August. I wanted it for my son's Xmas gift/ or Birthday. (End of Jan). Mike had just received 2 of them and was willing to hold one for me while I confirmed with my son and husband it was the right bike and then we could make the trip down to pick it up. (It was about 2.5 hours away). Once confirmed that it was the correct bike, I asked if he would ship it since he was 2.5 hours away. Mike said that it would be very expensive to ship and he would be willing to meet me so that I didn't have to drive as far. WOW!!! Was all that went through my head. And then it was so nice I thought this was a scam. He was willing to ship if I really wanted to but we took him up on his offer and met him the next day. Again, I was worried there were going to be hidden fees, something. No way can there be a store owner this nice. He had the bike everyone wanted, why was he helping me get it?!?! Nope, just a super nice guy wanting to do the right thing for my son's 14th bday. The moral of the review is this: here is someone who knew he wasn't going to get a long term regular customer (2.5 hours away) but he went out of his way to be an awesome person! He wasn't in it for the sale, he is a store owner that cares about the person, his customer. Anyone reading this, please go to this store and get your bikes, accessories, services from Mike!!!! He is a really standout person! If you are reading this, Thanks Mike!!!! PS: it wasn't like he had to do this to get rid of the bike. A couple of years ago I purchased a bike from Firehouse after having met the owner (Mike) over the course of a few group road rides. I've had the bike in the shop for a few minor adjustments and tune-ups over the past two years without problem, and I've bought some other items from the shop as well - also without issue. But today I brought in my bike after I screwed up the pedal threads on one of the crank arms. I fully expected to be going in to buy a new crankset, and losing the use of my bike for a week or two while I waited for the parts. Instead, Mike stopped what he was working on and re-threaded the crank with a tap and installed the pedal for me. At no charge. Mike's prices can't compete with online shops, but no website I've ever come across has been able to do what a few tools in a pair of capable hands can. read more

I went in to Firehouse Cycles trying purchase my first bike (crossing over from marathon running to triathlons) after doing research for several months. I was having a difficult time choosing a bike because of the size (I am in between sizes) and everyone knows that a good fit is important. I ended up putting down a $500 deposit to order a Specialized bike that evening and left happy with my decision. However, I went home to do some more research and started to question my decision. So I called the next morning as soon as the store opened, trying to ask a few more q's before he had the bike shipped to the store. Instead, I sensed that the owner/salesman, Mike, was losing patience as he mentioned that I was 'wasting his and my time.' I'm sorry, but when I'm about to drop $4000 on a bike and necessary gear, I'm going to have a few questions. I ended up leaving work early to see if I could go in and test the model bike one more time before the bike was sent to his store. At that moment, he said 'I don't have time for this, you can have your money back.' You don't have time for this? The 3 separate times I went to your store in the past 2 months, I saw one customer inside. The first time I was there, I sensed your unwillingness to help me and I should have never gone back again, but I did. I understand that many of your consumers go in and purchase bikes in cash since it is located in an affluent area, but don't judge a book by their cover. The questions asked and being able to sit on a bike again was something important to me, especially since it was my first bike, but you dismissed me immediately with an arrogant attitude. Will never shop here again. UPDATE 2/2/14 in response to owners response: First and foremost, thank you for admitting you were wrong. However, some of your responses were a little...interesting. 1 - "After the fitting process, and having a Specialized representative also check your fit" - there was no formal fitting process compared to what I have experienced at several other stores. All I did was sit on the bike and you said it looked fine. As for your Specialized representative, he came in to the store about 10 minutes after my arrival and just saw me sit on the bike as well. Maybe that is all that is needed with 17 years experience of selling bikes, but I definitely felt that more attention to detail was made at other stores I have visited in PA and NJ. 2 - "I started the process of getting the bicycle for you which involved contacting multiple shops and having a representative drive to get the bike for you ASAP. " - You found the bike I needed after talking to me on the phone, BEFORE I ever came in to the store, not because I put the deposit down. The reason why I visited your store was because you told me on the phone that you found the bike I wanted and could have it to me in less than a week. 3 - "I apologize that I could not extend a further discount with you as requested." - This review had nothing to do with the additional $50 discount. In the end, I put down a deposit to purchase the Shiv Elite. This comment is irrelevant and like I said, do not judge a book by its cover. 4 - "I understood I had not earned your trust and I suggested, impatiently, that you should pickup your deposit." - You did not 'suggest' that I pick up my deposit, you flat out told me 'I don't have time for this, you can have your money back' after I asked a few more questions. The main point of this review was that the salesmanship on your behalf was extremely poor. And from reading other negative reviews here on Yelp, such as Lori P. from Newtown, I would have to agree that your level of patience is non-existent. Yes, I did have another deposit down at another store. I waited a month for that bike and the delivery date got pushed back. I became very nervous as I have a race coming up that I needed to train for, so I started to look around for my other choice, the Shiv Elite. I had a bad experience with this shop after spending thousands with him on three bikes for me and my family. Mike suggested a bike for my son and when my son was uncomfortable with the type of bike, Mike wouldn't even consider exchanging the bike for another. He was quite rude and indignant about it. I was shocked especially after spending so much money there. My son rode the bike maybe 40ft, no wear and tear, no damage. For a small shop these guys really pack it in. They stock a full range of products and accessories, and the shop is still very tidy and organized. The owners are super friendly, and service is fast and affordable. I popped in just before closing one day with a flat tire and a previously purchased tube. The guy at the shop took the tube, examined the tire, popped on a new rim strip, and had the new tire inflated within a few minutes for about $10. First time I stopped in the store, I purchased a Specialized Rockhopper Pro Evo 650. Mike, the owner, suggested a few bikes for my needs and price range. He allowed a test drive of a bike similar to what I was interested in. Fitted & ordered the bike late Tuesday afternoon (small deposit required) was riding the bike by dinner Friday night (from Firehouse to the Continental). Saturday Morning was the true maiden tour. Rode Jersey-side canal from Washington's Crossing to Lambertville-New Hope and back; with a few off-road excursions. The bike exceeded my expectations for handling. I had to make NO adjustments to seat height, brakes, derailer, wheel track... I have dealt with the other well-known shop in the area since I was 12. Have never had this type of attention to detail of service. Added Plus- plays great music in the background! See you again soon! read more

I went to Firehouse Cycles for a new tube and to replace a pump that had been sold to me by the owner of Newtown Bike Shop. That pump did not fit my bike valve and consequently ruined the tube. The service at Newtown was so bad (rude!) I didn't even want to go back to return the pump. Patrick at Firehouse in Yardley couldn't have been nicer. He, and another young worker, replaced the tube and put it on my bike for a great price and sold me an appropriate pump. He even put the bike in my car for me. Friendly, courteous service. Second year I have taken a bike in for an annual 'Tune Up'. First year No Problems, a good experience. This year picked up my bike this weekend and when i got it home and examined it I found that areas of the frame were not even dusted or cleaned, my 'Cats Eye' computer was loose and in a different location on the handle bar, bell was also in a different position. The seat was repositioned for someone who was much taller than I'am. Most importantly the chain 'chatter' and slippage I experienced before the 'tune up' was again evident on my first ride despite re-assurances by the young mechanic that the 'tune up' will have taken care of the issue. Although, the loose Cats Eye and bell may seem trite the fact of the matter is after spending almost $80.00 for a tune up my expectation was that I would just have to get on the bike and enjoy riding rather than spend time re-adjusting the bike. Chain adjustments were evidently not completed to specifications. Very disappointed in the service. read more

I initially went in just to buy a tool for a Shimano bottom bracket, purchased it for $25, no problem. While working on my bike, I realized I was sold a wrong bottom bracket (not from them) and had to go back to firehouse and purchase the proper bottom bracket from them. THEY HAD THE BOTTOM BRACKET I NEEDED, IN STOCK, AND WOULD NOT SELL IT TO ME, BECAUSE I DID NOT NEED THEM TO PUT IT ON FOR ME. I am an experienced mechanic with several years of working in reputable shops in the city and have NEVER had someone say this to me. I was appalled at how low that is of a shop, especially when it was the owner himself who refused to sell it to me. Craziest part is, the sold me the tool though prior, so I had just bought a tool from them, that I now had no purpose for, and the new bottom bracket would've cost about $50, and the labor they wanted to do would on average be between $60-80. Rather than taking my money for the bottom bracket like any normal business, I had to go to a shop half hour away just to get the part. THANKS FOR NOTHING GUYS! read more

Today was my first experience as a customer at firehouse cycles. I entered with two of my children with the intent of obtaining a new innertube for my mountain bike. Prior to arriving, I had called to inquire about the cost of a patch ($5) and replacement innertube ($8). Upon arrival, the gentleman behind the desk, who I presumed to be the owner, assisted me in obtaining a replacement tube. He was very professional, and even checked the inside of the actual tire for any sharp objects when he realized I brought it with me. Then, he had partially filled the inner tube, place it on the rim, and inflated it to the proper pressure. I was very satisfied with the level of service, until I was rung up at the cash register. The total was $19 and change. I was caught off guard and surprised, as I was told over the phone that it would be eight dollars. I asked about the discrepancy, and was told there was a $10 labor charge to insert the tube on the rim- something that took him a matter of seconds. I explained I was not told this upfront, and was disappointed. His response was that this is customary. My position is that charging a fee after a service without knowing what the fee is in advance is neither appropriate or nor professional. I had intended to take the minute or two it would have taken at home to insert the tube on the rim, and thought he was doing a professional courtesy by doing so for me. Boy, was I fooled! Next time, I'd suggest that you ask your customers in advance if they'd like a service, and not make assumptions. What would have easily been a five-star experience, became a two star experience. I have four small children who will all be needing upgraded bikes in the future, and can honestly say this experience has caused me reserve in visiting firehouse cycles for additional business. read more
