How have I never reviewed Scheels?…read more I am grateful to have this location. With two kiddos that are active in a lot of sports, Scheels has come to the rescue a time or two. (Specifically, when I realized my son didn't have an adequate batting helmet for baseball mere hours before his first game of the season. I was able to order online and pickup no problem. He is insanely proud of his golden helmet, might I add.) This location expanded during the pandemic and has a ton! Hunting, biking, fishing, skiing,... a robust Iowa Hawkeye apparel section... shoes, apparel-- you name it! Honestly, my favorite spot to shop Scheels is online. I got some amazing Fornia clothes on clearance. My blazer I got is legit one of my favorite things and I spent less than $10-- what a steal! I also got some great Mud Pie Christmas decor super cheap online. It's open daily, parking is a non-issue. Staff is always so friendly and knowledgable. As I mentioned above, don't forget to order online easily for pickup.

When we came in, we had a few employees greet us and smile as they saw our little girl (honestly it's hard to be in a bad mood when you sees you because she is so cute and will turn your bad day into a much better one). Not expecting to really purchase anything in particular, we just walked around the store and browsed. This location sells Iowa University clothing, that can be found on the first floor. There is also a mascot statue of Herky The Hawk by the clothing section (an older version of this mascot). Upstairs, you can find rifles, binoculars, etc. But most importantly the dog section, in which our little girl was very excited to lead us to (although this is our first time visiting this location, she just knew where her section is). We let her choose what item she would like for us to buy her, which ended up being a resealable bag of dried salmon dog treats. At the register downstairs, this friendly employee had asked if our dog had picked out this item herself, lol. We laughed about it, as we told him yes she did. Overall, had a great shopping experience and would shop here regularly if I lived around this area.

One day, bright eyed Jenni decided-- "Today is the day I'm going to make Iowa Hawkeye sugar…read morecookies." That day Jenni ventured to store X, Y and Z in search of a tigerhawk shaped cutter. Thinking, "How hard could it be in a University town to find a cutout of the logo?" Apparently, it was a damn near impossible task. Dragging a preschooler and toddler around-- Jenni became discouraged. It was nearly lunchtime, the kids were cranky. Jenni was freaking... irritable. (We will settle on the word irritable.) As she ventured out of the mall in her big ass SUV, her eyes came to the Black & Gold Shop. Having never been in, honestly always driving by it assuming it was just another run of the mill Iowa Hawkeye shop-- she asked herself, should she or shouldn't she? Glancing in her rearview mirror to two kiddos turning into little gremlins right before her eyes... she decided what the hell and pulled in. A last ditch effort. Horrendously parking in the very narrow, tiny lot-- Jenni pressed onward. And grabbed each tiny human's hand as she entered. HOLY HAWKEYES. An Iowa City native, Jenni had never seen so much high quality gear in one spot. Items ranging from apparel to decor, from football to basketball or wrestling. If this store didn't have what she was looking for, nowhere did. (Except maybe Amazon? But she'd have had to plan two days in advance for that, and heaven forbid she... but we digress.) As she perused the massive, meticulously organized store she took a look at the price tags attached. They were all ohhhh so very high. But, the selection! WOW. The staff was pleasant and helpful in a non lingering type of way. AND believe it or not, the cutter was found. The clouds parted, sun shone down on the dinky metal cutter-- but Jennis heart grew three times bigger that day, even after paying $10 for a metal tigerhawk cutter. Cookies were made for all. They were tasty as hell. And everyone lived happily ever after. The End.

However, the checkout process is where expectations fell very short. First, the device to remove the magnetic theft detection device on clothing didn't work so the associates spent 6-8 minutes try to pry it off with scissors. I was watching the entire time thinking they would damage the $110 pullover. They could tell I was concerned and said they had been having to take this approach all day. The woman at the register seemed annoyed when I was asking about it and alluded that I had a choice to return it or wait until they successfully removed it. They final removed the device with scissors and thankfully didn't damage the product as the few remaining pieces on the rack in my size showed scuffs/marks on them. My issues are mangement should have provided the sales associates with a working machine to remove the magnetic device. And the woman at the register should be much much more customer-centric. You should try shopping at Scheels to get a sense for outstanding customer service. Thanks.

We were informed that "2nd wind" is indeed an exercise term, but that the majority of things were indeed new. The selection was by no means vast, but was more than what you'd find at Scheels or Big 5. They seemed to specialize in higher end machines that ranged from $800 to $3-4K. A lot of what they carry was larger in size and good for people with tons of space for equipment. A few used items were scattered about, but the majority of what they carry was medium to high end. The gentleman who helped us was knowledgeable and seemed like the sort of dude who had used most of the machines at one time or another. Overall, it's a nice place if you've got a huge room to dedicate to work out equipment. I come to this Hawk Shop during my twice yearly trips to Iowa City, and with each visit, non branded gear sections get smaller and smaller. The class book section is still there, but hidden in the back. There's a graduate section, some digital items, and a little bit of stationary. The rest of the place is packed solid with Hawkeye Gear. It's all very nice, well curated, expensive, and obviously a big money maker. The University also seems a bit shameless in promoting this place, as I watched tour guide after tour guide during a recent visitation day, go out of their way to point to "Hawk" this Shop's wares. It must of have worked, as I lost count of all the yellow Hawk Shop bags I saw within the tour groups. And of course, I'm not immune either. I purchased a few things last week, and helped by a couple sales items and a gift certificate. It's great stuff to show off back home in Genoa Nevada. And when I return, who knows what I'll find.
