Finca Guell might be the orginal example of trencadis, Gaudi's inventive mosaic technique using cut tiles (from the Catalan verb, trencar, meaning to break). Guell was a rich patron who became Gaudi's friend, this was his first commission that would develop into an important lifelong relationship. The garden that's left is often closed but the most remarkable part of it is the gate that is always visible. It depicts the legend of Ladon, the dragon which guarded the entrance to the Garden of the Hesperides, in tribute to the Catalan poet Verdaguer and his epic poem "'Atlantida."
