There is a tremendous amount to see and read throughout the memorial. The museum does a very thorough job walking you through the history of Dachau, from its opening in 1933 through the years of the concentration camp and its liberation. There are photographs, documents, personal stories and exhibits that really put into perspective what happened here. Being able to walk through the grounds makes the history feel much more real than simply reading about it. Seeing the reconstructed barracks, the rows of bunks, the prisoner toilets, the foundations where the other barracks once stood, the fencing and guard towers was extremely difficult but important to see in person. The grounds are much larger than I expected, and I would recommend giving yourself plenty of time. There is a lot of walking and a lot of information to take in. We spent several hours here and still could have spent longer reading everything. It feels strange to say you "enjoyed" visiting somewhere with such a horrific history, but I am very grateful we visited. It is educational, emotional and incredibly thought-provoking. Seeing a place like this in person is something that stays with you and reinforces how important it is that this history continues to be preserved and remembered.

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site [Bavaria, Germany]…read more The Memorial is open to visitors daily from 9 am to 5 pm and entrance to the Memorial is free. You can rent a headset for a few euros. We spent about 3 hours doing a self-guided tour exploring the grounds and looking at the various exhibitions. Guided tours are available. We were able to see remnants of the foundations of the main SS guardhouse where the arriving prisoners first entered the concentration camp, the vast open space of the roll call area located between the maintenance building and the barracks complex and all the way to the former crematorium area, the main place of remembrance in the Memorial Site. "Between 1933 and 1945, around 41,500 persons died of hunger, exhaustion, and disease, the direct result of being tortured, or were brutally murdered in the Dachau concentration camp and its subcamps." Visiting Dachau was the most poignant experience in my entire trip to Germany. I didn't leave the place with dry eyes. The grounds is huge so wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. Review #4082

But most do not seem to realize that Dachau is a premedieval city with plenty to explore that has nothing to do with the Third Reich. Take the Schloss Dachau and the BEAUTIFUL gardens. It was only a euro or two to get in to the palace - though they let us in for free with our Mehrtagesticket (best investment ever in our trip!). Now, a majority of the palace was closed that morning...I'm not sure if other parts are normally open. We were able to see the main entrance and two rooms on the upper floor...one a normal palace-y room at the top of the stairs, and then a breathtaking room with a gorgeous carved wood ceiling. It was mesmerizing...and then add the view out into the gardens...just spectacular! We went back downstairs and went around the backside of the palace to see the gardens (no entrance fee required). I think we spent more time exploring the gardens than we did the palace itself. A few mornings a week, you can get fresh flowers (I saw the sign) to bring home. If we would have had more time, I would have brought a picnic to enjoy along the paths. There is a pay parking lot right up front of the castle - it was a euro or two to park. More expensive than in the old town, but still very reasonable. Do yourself a favor and explore everything that Dachau has to offer!

The architectural style is very charming, and the light snowfall added to the enchanting atmosphere. There are lots of swans, you can feed them. It's a wonderful place for walks, especially in summer and spring. There are free parking spots nearby, and the restrooms are clean and open.

We brought sandwiches, snacks and water which made for a little picnic. The garden is enormous and beautifully maintained. Wish we had gardens such as this in the USA. I think this may even be bigger than the Central Park in NYC - most certainly safer! We went on a Monday but it was still full of people. From what it seems, it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Locals wade into the water and there are even some spots where they surf! I believe there's even a lifeguard in one of the areas. They don't just let anyone surf though and there are some warning signs about its dangers. Hubby and I were able to find a bench in the shade where we just enjoyed the scenery for a while. It was perfect for our jet lag recovery The park is also within walking distance from many other landmarks in Munich, such as The Residence, the Odeonsplatz, Mariensplatz, The Munich Cathedral, among many others.

Locals told us that it was designed by an Englishman to look like an English Park. It was pretty, but it looks like home. It was great for people watching and did enjoy seeing more surfers , and lots of bikers, dogs and walkers. It was a beautiful & sunny 73° & the perfect place to get in well over 10,000 steps here.

I recommend when touring here that you opt for the in-depth audio tour as it is very informative in great detail. This palace is never ending as it seems. You can spend literally hours here. Every room has its own description and life. Simply amazing to be standing in a part of history which was originated in the late 1300s.

Late afternoons it's very busy with lines of people trying to purchase & outdoor seating overflowing. Each stall beautifully presents its wares. Between stalls are magnificent fountains. I understand we can bring out gourmet picnic from the market to the beer hall, and enjoy my meal with a cold brew. However, by the end of the day after 20,000 + steps my feet hurt, I'm tired & just want to be served. The Viktualienmarkt developed from an original farmers' market in 1807 to a popular market for gourmets. There are now 140 stalls and shops offering flowers, exotic fruit, game, poultry, spices, chocolates, wines & cider, pastries, cheese, fish, juices....
