This was our first time coming here and it was a great experience. There were some drawbacks, but I'll get to those in a bit. We booked our trip in July, the weather was pretty good. We experienced a high of 84 and one of the nights it was down at 52! We did read that it gets cold at night so luckily we brought warm clothes to sleep in. Having a beanie and warm blankets helped get through the cold nights. Second night was a low of 64, so that wasn't too bad. I like to book my campsite as close as possible to the restrooms to make the trips short, but just an FYI, these restrooms have a really bad smell. The restrooms are kept very clean, but the smell comes from the vent. We could smell that stuff from our campsite, so I would recommend choosing a spot not too close to these restrooms. The campsites looked very nice in size, there was some distance between sites. I like my privacy and I like that there were many small trees providing tons of shade and separation from neighbors. The sites have a BBQ pit and a fire pit. Unfortunately a fire restriction was placed the day before we arrived so we couldn't use either or. They allowed us to use a gas stove. There is no running water as mentioned so we brought extra to drink, wash dishes, and shower. They do sell water at the site, but it is very expensive so be sure to bring a lot of water. read more

Drove up to this site from LA. The drive up the mountain road was a little harrowing. You'll make it if you have a regular sedan, but trucks/SUV's are better suited for the climb. It was about 9pm when I settled in and began making camp. It was very quiet, even with neighbors within earshot. As far as this site goes in the summer, the weather was very tame. No humidity, cool breezes, and clear skies. The stars are very bright and visible in this part of the county, so it was a relaxing sight looking up at the sky. I made a quick dinner and hunkered down for the night. Upon waking up, I noticed that the site was well maintained. There's a nice serenity that the campground offers. However, be prepared for bugs. Lots of them. I began cooking breakfast and immediately some yellow jackets started to crowd the picnic table. They can smell meat very easily, so I would be careful about where and when you open your cooler of bacon. I got a tiny fire going and cooked over the smoke - they shy away from the smell of smoke, so it slightly helped. As the day went on, more bugs came in. They weren't big ol' nasty bugs. They were just the annoying little gnats that buzz by your ears. Occasionally, a breeze would shoo them away for a couple minutes, but then they'd come back to do their thing. Bug spray helps for maybe 30 seconds. Thing is, they'll just hover above your skin and not actually land on you, which is equally annoying. Overall, I would return to this site in the winter months. The cold should keep the bugs away. They were so prevalent this time around, it really detracted from the nice parts of the experience. Other than that, this is a nice and quiet getaway from the city life. 15-20 minutes down the mountain is a small town, so be prepared to feel isolated from civilization. Bring your own water, too. read more

First off, there's NO running water here. So bring plenty of water to drink and clean your dishes with and wash your hands. The toilets lead to a hillside, so you don't even flush when you're done. The road to this site is extremely sketchy. Very narrow and close to the edge of the mountain. Also, I'm not sure if it's because it's summer time, but there were A LOT of flies. It was so bad my girlfriend and I had to leave early because of the issue. I'm only giving this location a 3 star rating because the wildlife walks literally onto the camp site. read more

This is a good campsite minus the bugs/flies... they will annoy the heck out of you. We of course knew this coming in but thought we could ride it out which we did but could not wait for sun down so they'd leave us alone. The campsite is small and quaint. The restrooms are clean majority of the time but can get stinky real quick. Other than that it is fairly clean. Please know there is no running water so bring as much water as possible. There isn't much exploring to do in the campsite so we decided to walk down to a near by "Creek" but there was absolutely no water which was a huge disappointment. Cellphone service is spotty. At night, the skyline is beautiful. We walked towards an open area where the stars felt like they were in your face (it was awesome). One of the nights during our stay, my group and I were celebrating a birthday so after our dinner we decided to sit around the fire and play games, we were yelled at by our neighbors to be quiet. We couldn't make out who it was but continued to do our thing. It was no even 10 pm when all this happened. Just be aware of rude neighbors that don't know how to have some fun. Not sure if I'd ever visit this campsite again, but it was a decent stay. read more

Beautiful drive to Figueroa Campground. It will take 30-40 min from Los Olivos. The drive comes with various curves and uphills with a few spots to stop and enjoy the views. We were so happy we timed it perfectly and was able to enjoy the sunset views and it was stunning. Highly recommend checking out this campground. read more

Went camping here on Valentine's weekend with my bestie and our bf's. We were originally planning on backpacking in Sepse but car camping seemed more glamorous- haha! We got there Saturday afternoon and it was easy to find a nice camping area big enough for 2 cars, an 8-person tent, picnic table, fire pit, and small grill. There are pit toilets (bring a flashlight and tp if you're picky) and a dumpster near the entrance which is convenient. Strangely, we didn't really see any animals - not even squirrels - and the first night it was so windy there were no bugs or birds either! There are a few trails nearby but the best one was from a trailhead near Nira campground which is about a half hour drive from Figueroa. The park ranger station is helpful if you are interested in finding more trails. You also need an adventure pass from a Big5 or any sporting goods store before coming in, so make sure you're prepared for that! The adventure pass is $5 per night, per car. Even though it isn't that far from a town (Los Olivos was on the way in), it definitely had a peaceful and more isolated feel. I hear it is busier during the summer but late winter/ early spring is a good time to go as it wasn't too hot or too busy. I enjoyed my time here overall, but next time I will probably try camping in Nira campgrounds as I liked the trail there better. read more

We camped here Memorial Day weekend and thought it was going to be packed, but there were many available spots. We got a spot right by the tree line so we were able to get plenty of wood for campfires. There are many trails nearby and lots of places to explore! I recommend checking out the vista point. Especially as the clouds roll in in the morning! Beautiful views! The nearest town is Los Olivos, but I would recommend coming prepared because it's extremely expensive, but a cute town. read more

Good clean campground and the sites are nicely set up, good space with fire pits and bbq. The other reviews regarding flies and bugs are extremely accurate. This is a great campsite if there are not flies and bugs. If that's seasonal and they aren't around in certain months this is a great place. Had no such luck. The review explaining they descend and swarm from morning until the sun sets is spot on. Does not allow for you to just enjoy leisure time at the site because of the hoards of flies. Conclusion...DON'T GO DURING THE SUMMER! We were looking for a nice quiet place to have a camping trip during Labor Day weekend. Everything near a body or water or near any kind of destination was booked so after searching a lot online we discovered this campground and liked that they had walk up reservations. We stayed in spot 8. Since it was a holiday weekend the available spots filled up quickly so I'm glad we got here early in the day. As the day wore on it got pretty hot, but we notice that once it got cooler, the gnats and deer flies came out in full force and swarmed us. They were absolutely relentless and we had to spend most of the day hiding out in the tent just so we wouldn't be bothered or bit by these flies. Since the sun set the flies went away and we were left in peace to cook our dinner. The stars were gorgeous and it was a nice cool evening. Things were going well until about 5am...and it started to rain. We didn't have our fly up because it was so hot at night so we woke up in a panic trying to get the damn thing on. As soon as we got it up the rain ironically stopped. This is not a complaint...the result of this rain tho during the season however is a warning to others coming during the summer because as soon as that rain stopped, the biblical plague-like hum of the flies broke the silence of the dawn and they began to descend on us as soon as the sun began to rise. We tried to work quickly to make our breakfast which included some eggs. 5 mins into making our eggs Yellow Jacket Wasps began to descend from out of nowhere and literally SWARMED all of our food. It took us over an hour just to get things away from them without attacking us all while trying to combat the gnats and flies that were hovering all around us. Our breakfast was rendered inedible because so many wasps had got stuck and died in our food and we had to dump everything on the ground and bury it with a shovel just to get the wasps to leave our camp. By then we were really worn out and used the last of our energy to pack up and get the hell out of there. We got barely any sleep because of wandering loud neighbors as well as the fact that the tent area was on a slope so we continued to slide down our cots every hour or so and would have to wake up and situate ourselves. But by far...the worst part of it was the biblical plague-like concentration of flies and wasps. Otherwise it was a beautiful location and plenty secluded. Just....don't go in the summer. The only real pain in the butt here are the flies. They seem relentless. They don't bite or anything and they won't land on you if you have bug spray on but... if you can't take a buggy place then move on. Otherwise... I want to say I had the best time here this last weekend. All the campsites are clean, there was no garbage, the bathrooms are vault toilets but they are clean and it doesn't get much better than this for a campground with basically no amenities but fire rings and a barbecue, and a lovely picnic table at each campsite. Missy, the camp host, is awesome! She's safety conscious, and extremely knowledgeable about animals... And actually clarified for us that a screaming sound was actually a mountain lion mating call. I thought it was a screaming woman in distress. She also pointed us in the direction of great hiking trails and a nearby hike that led to a little waterfall. I wish every camp host was as great as she is. Can't wait to get back here! read more

There is a reason this campground does not sell out. The flies and mosquitoes are literally attacking you from 7AM-7PM. Its not fun. Otherwise, beautiful. Bottom of the Hill is Downtown Los Olivos which is quaint and good for wine lovers. Maybe go in the winter when I assume the flies will tone down. read more

We have now been here a couple of times. One of my favorite places. Its remote and you need to pack in and pack it out. (They do have trash bins at the entrance to the park now). They have toilets and nice long benches, fire pits and BBQ area. Plenty of room for two cars and two tents in each camp spot. About 30 spots here and its at about 4,000 feet elevation. Its pretty in Spring with flowers blooming but can be very windy. In the summer its pleasant and cool and relatively empty until the 2nd week in August. The hunters come in to hunt dear (bambi) and bear (smokey and booboo) at that time. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. We received a warning. Very peaceful place for a weekend. read more

I don't write reviews often but it's so hard to find reviews or insider info on campsites! I recently went there about a weekend ago and had a really great time! I live in Santa Monica so getting there was roughly a 3 hour drive. There was a patch of a few miles of non-paved road, which in my Honda Civic I survived but if you have a low car I wouldn't suggest using it. We actually wanted to go Davey Brown campground but when we got down there it was packed at 10am. So we drove back out of there and went to the Fig campground instead which ended up being much better! There were quite a few campgrounds open all day. It was really open and you aren't too close to your neighbors. The bathrooms are basically a hole in the ground so if you are easily queasy about such things I wouldn't recommend it, or just try the roughing it in nature option of picking a nice looking tree. There are two grills which is great, one on the fire pit and one actually coal burning grill. It got pretty cold at night but the stars were UH-mazing. All in all, I'd definitely recommend it. The views were amazing, the site was nice...just be ready to rough it! read more

Figueroa Campground - Campgrounds Near Me - Los Olivos, California

Where do I start. My girlfriend and I arrived Saturday, June 17. Jeremy, who was managing the campsite, was very courteous as he explained the campground and the "lay of the land". What a great campsite. So clean and the bathrooms were very clean. We found a site and as soon as I parked, I rolled over a rock or something that put a hole in my back tire. Being 45 min away from civilization, I was very worried about what we would do. My spare was low so I didn't know what I was going to do. During the evening, Jeremy and Misty (Missy) were making rounds to check on all the campers. We told them our plight and Misty (or Missy) said she had an air compressor. She offered it to us to try and get enough air in the punctured tire to get to town. How incredibly lucky were we! The next morning, we were able to fill up the tire using the air compressor. We dropped it off on the table next to Jeremy's campsite. That gave us enough air to get to a service station to patch the hole and we made it home. Big Thanks to Jeremy and Misty (Missy). I don't know what we would have done without them. Such great people. I sure hope they get a chance to read this. Thank You!!!!!! read more

I'm so glad we did. There are 33 sites and only about 10 were being used when we were there. There is no ranger and camping is free, but you need an Adventure Pass. There is no water available, just vault toilets (maybe 5 total, each with 2 toilets). Use at your own risk. I personally am scared of them and have no problem going outside ha ha. Each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, and bbq. It was very peaceful and quiet when we were there. We saw no animals except for birds and squirrels. There are no bear lockers so I'm not sure if bears are a huge problem here. Only thing I should mention is that it gets really windy up here - makes for campfire smoke blowing in your eyes and I found it really hard to sleep because the wind was very loud around our tent. There are some dirt roads nearby that we explored in the truck - really cool views. I'd come back again, just bring a lot of food and water because services are kind of far away. You have to pack out your trash as there are no dumpsters at the campground. Oh, and bring toilet paper because the bathrooms were empty when we were there. read more

Figueroa or Davy Brown? Depends. They are relatively close (distance wise) to one another (Nira is close by as well.) Reasons why I LIKE Davy Brown: - No cell reception! Get off your phone! You're in the great outdoors. Just this once, put it down. - More isolated. Feel like Bear Grylls on roids. - Running creek sound. Relaxing. - Davy Brown lived and hunted bears here in the 1880's when he was like 83. Reasons why I DISLIKE Davy Brown: - No cell reception! Yeah I know what I said earlier, but I didn't mean it. I need to see how many likes my slomo campfire vid got on Instagram. - Bugs: They. Will. Destroy. You. Bug spray works at first, but then they're like "that was really cute for a second. I eat your face now." - Running creek sound. Makes me pee more often. - Poison Oak is in abundance. Figueroa is bigger, yet somehow cozier to me. More tree options for your hammock. Cell reception is spotty, but it's there. To be fair, bugs are pretty bad here too. It's windier, it's colder. There's wood everywhere to fuel your fire if you run out of your 6-dollar-a-bundle ripoff wood from the market. Btw, I wrote this at Figueroa in front of my campfire eating cheesy puffs. read more

We tried to camp here just last weekend and were so disappointed upon arrival that you cannot make fires in the camp fire pits or use the coal grills (they're currently only allowing propane stoves). This wasn't posted anywhere online, and when we asked the camp ranger he informed us that "nowhere south of Monterrey" currently allows fires at campsites. On a whim, we stopped by Cachuma Lake about 10 minutes away and they had no fire restrictions. The site itself was lovely and secluded, so we were sad to leave. I'd definitely call the ranger station to make sure you can build a fire before going as it gets chilly at night and the campsite is about half an hours drive up a very windy, narrow mountain road, so it wouldn't be the best idea to go out to dinner and try and do that drive at night. read more
