Well, well, well, I should have known better, shouldn't I... but hey, when you're in a hurry to run an errant at 9am on a Tuesday when Leidseplein is still empty, you leave your bike out of the parking-dedicated area for 20 minutes, you don't think that it could happen to you.... but then, when you come back and your bike is no longer where you left it, you know exactly where it is (or at least you hope it is): at the Fietsdepot....! (also called the end of the world)
Although I hate it, I understand why the city of Amsterdam has to take away many bikes. And the good side of it is that everything is really well organized: I called the next morning (24 hours: that's how long I could survive without my bike), the lady on the phone was very nice and helpful (and spoke perfect English like everyone in this city). She was able to tell me that it was likely that my bike was there because there is a "bike operation" on Leidseplein every Tuesday morning (wish that I knew that before!!). Their data base is also constantly updated and already on the phone I found out that one bike matched my bike's description. If you have your bike serial number you can even search yourself on their website.
Then I only had to get there... by public transport... it is quite far away but I got there eventually!
Again, very nice and efficient service, in less than 10 minutes I had found my bike (it WAS there :D ). You need an ID, the key to your bike, and you'll have to pay 10 euros (they take pin).
And then off you go, back to the city with your beloved bike! read more
