Missouri History Museum - Sunny day for the museum

But this museum also gets five stars from me because it's awesome. You wouldn't think that there'd be a lot for children and families to do at a history museum, but there is. There's a huge kids area here, with lots of hands-on activities and cute little spaces for pretend play. If my kids were younger, I could see us spending a good hour or more just playing in the children's area. Even the spaces that aren't the children's area are family friendly. There are displays and exhibits with lots things to learn about and explore. It's just a fun little museum to visit. (And again, it's free!) I guess I buried the lede here, but the Missouri History Museum is where you can learn about Saint Louis and Missouri history. So there are exhibits about the World's Fair, baseball, music and things that pertain to the region, plus collections of memorabilia and artwork. It's a nice museum to visit to get a sense of the area of St. Louis.

They also had a centennial exhibit, which was especially fun for me because Philadelphia has been doing so many events around its 250th anniversary. I love seeing how different places celebrate these big historical milestones. And did I mention it's FREE? I will never complain about a free museum. Honestly, I'm not picky. If you give me a museum I can wander around and learn things in without paying admission, I'm happy. There are also charging plugs around the museum, which is such a small thing but SO appreciated when your phone is dying halfway through a visit. The airplane hanging from the ceiling is also really cool and definitely one of those things that makes you stop and look up. The whole place has a really nice, relaxed vibe. It's quiet, there's plenty to learn, and there are places to sit and rest when you need a break. I really enjoyed just wandering around at my own pace. Free, educational, peaceful, and actually interesting. That's pretty much everything I want in a museum.

Parking is free if you're a member, if not you'll be charged unless you walk over , shuttle or park somewhere else nearby free. We were worried he would be scared, but he was so happy lol. The rest of the museum was pretty cool, but it focuses more on older kids so the small ones didn't have much to interact with. The outdoor area about agriculture was nice (there are chickens!) and a giant tractor to play on. Another interesting part was past the bridge called the Vault. It was just collections over time, and all over the world. If you have time to spend all day, it would be cool, but we're going to wait a little bit until my toddler is older. Parking is $15, but not bad compared elsewhere.

It's pretty cool that Degas' "Little Dancer of Fourteen Years" is on permanent display here. I was kind of awestruck when I came across this sculpture. Anyone can just come and see this world-famous artwork! I love when art is accessible to everyone. The museum is huge. There are more than 37,000 objects in the Saint Louis Art Museum, spanning multiple cultures across 5,000 years. I kind of like functional art, so I was happy to see some Russel Wright in the collection. But you'll find everything from ancient Chinese objects to impressionist paintings to photography and all kinds of things. Some galleries are busier than others, but the museum is so big that I was able to find little pockets where I could just be by myself with the art. I love absorbing art in a quiet, peaceful room. You can definitely do that here in some places.

We went during the Ancient Rome exhibition and it was breathtaking to see the size of the sculptures and learn about the families, royalty vs their servants, what type of armor and jewelry they would wear. Alongside the pieces of art that are normally there, I love the museum and think everyone in STL should visit.

We didn't know if we could get on the tour that day so we first stopped by to see it and take some pictures. We met an intern and found out that we could get in on a tour about 2 hours later. So we paid our fee and went to see Frank Lloyd Wright's mentor, Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building in downtown St. Louis. I believe this is one of Sullivan's best work still standing. When we returned for the tour I was stunned. This is a great, late house by Wright that has many magical and playful elements to it. It's has most of the original furnishings and something totaling unexpected in a Usonian house--art glass windows. The tour guide was new and did an excellent. Everyone involved in this project should be very proud of the work they've done, and continue to do.

She was very knowledgeable about Wright and Russell and Ruth Kraus who the house was built for and the only residents. The Kraus house is one of the very few Wright houses that have not been remodeled and contains the original furniture designed by Wright. It has a cozy feel from the time you walk inside. I was intrigued by the esthetic design throughout the home.

They have so many varieties of plants and different biomes to visit. The Climatron was my favorite spot, with waterfalls and so many tropical plants. The Japanese gardens were also beautiful and so serene. We went midday on a Monday so there were hardly any kids, making it even more peaceful and quiet. Parking is free and admission is $16 for non-residents, well worth it for how much you get to enjoy. The gift shop is a bit pricey but it goes towards preserving the gardens so it's also worth it. They have something for everyone there too! If you don't know the area, don't do what we did and try to park on Tower Grove and walk. It's a long walk around the edge of the gardens. We thought you could get in from the side but you can't, there's just the one main entrance off Shaw. With ample free parking there's no reason to try to get street parking anyway, so save yourself the trouble and just go to the right place the first time. I definitely want to come back another time of year if I can. I bet this place is stunning in the spring and beautiful when it snows.
