Took a little bit of time but eventually they seemed to warm to me. One huge biker dude took a shine to me and kept joking with me all night in broken English. At the end of his night (which was quite early) he swooped in and gave me a kiss on the cheek and wished me a lovely vacation. The bathrooms were cleaner and nicer than the cobalt/funkys/astoria from my dives back home in Vancouver - seriously Vancouver, get your shit together - LITERALLY. Drink prices seemed super reasonable to me. But really anywhere in Europe they seem reasonable to me. Bartender didn't really know how to make a whiskey sour and what I ended up drinking wasn't that fantastic, but I think that's my fault, what the hell was I doing ordering a whiskey sour at this place? Beer seems to be the best bet. The place filled up quick and seemed very popular with the locals and tourists alike.

Because its a selforganized squatlike place theyre endangered by being bought-offand lose their facilities like so many alternative venues in Berlin these days. Classics from every decade represented! And wow... They make incredible Moscow mules, which is something I would have never expected! Maybe they were too good? I totally didn't plan to drink that many. *Lol* But going back to the crowd ... I loved the come as you are vibe -- the complete opposite of the gotther than thou snottery in Barcelona! Ppl were wearing all kinds of different things, just being themselves and having a great time... Ages 18 to maybe even 60+! The main issues I have with Astra are the mediocre acoustics, the disadvantageous layout (it's impossible to see anything if you're not in front), and the overall dirtiness of the place. Additionally, its location is right on the corner of Revaler and Warschauer = total foot-traffic clusterfuck. No thanks. One thing I do like is the security guardrail up front, which makes shooting photography at well-attended shows a breeze. But that aside, there aren't many redeeming qualities about this place.

Once you get in Theres a smokers zone which smells like hell, and even when it's not wide open you can smell it when you pass by. Inside there were really long lines at the bar but at least the whole area was smoke free. We got ourselves a beer and went to the main hall. So the main hall, Yep - where the stage is. Contained pretty much nothing, all the facilities are in the previous hall. There are 2 large columns pretty close to the stage which kinda block the view if you're planning to stand somewhere on the side. In addition to that the stage is pretty low so I had to stand on the tip of my toes to see something most of the show (I'm not short), it wasn't too comfortable for me and I'm sure the short girls behind didn't have a really good time either - maybe that's why they pushed me in order to get forward. It's a non smoking zone and of course people ignore it completely and light up an occasional cigarette with nobody to tell them to put it off. On the way out we chose to leave a little before the last song so things went a little smoother, but lines did pile up after we left. Some good things- sounds and lightning were great, and the show itself was pretty awesome with some cool vibes an mostly nice people. I'll probably go again if one of my favorite artists will came but I'm definitely not a big fan of this place.

Its nice if you get there earlier, as seating is harder to come by as the kids come rushing in. Not good for dancing and its hard to hear people talking...unless you are sitting. This results in a lot of people just standing around, drinking. I suggest this place as an pre-game spot to hit up before going to a club or if you just want to have an "early" Berlin evening.
