Six months ago, our family's world changed...our teenage daughter decided to try fencing. We chose Fence St. Louis for the location and the opportunity for beginner lessons. After her first beginner lesson, L was so excited her schedule became "It's # days till fencing". Coach Annamaria has been patient while challenging L to grow her skills. Coach Annamaria's supportive teaching style works well with L's learning style. Fencers are taught to celebrate individual goals like extending her arm correctly as she lunges and using parry 3 more frequently, instead of focusing on points scored. L has chosen to compete locally and Coach Annamaria's encouragement and feedback have made a difference in L's performance while competing. While we are new to the St. Louis Women's Saber competition experience, we have seen women fencers be fierce competitors on the strip and kind and friendly to each other off the strip. The weekly Youth & Adult classes are fun and encouraging. The comradery is fun to see, and new fencers are easily welcomed into the group. Fencers work on strengthening their bodies, footwork, team building, and fencing skills in each class. L loves that the more experienced fencers will give tips to newer fencers during or after a bout.  She also likes fencing in a mixed gender and age class because of all the different styles and strategies used. She often comments on other fencers' accomplishments in addition to her own, and they are more like a team instead of opponents in an individual sport. Since starting classes six months ago, we have seen our daughter grow in confidence both in and out of fencing. She is bolder with taking on responsibility, she's trying new strategies to ongoing challenges, and she's always excited for class even after a long day at school. The person who wrote the previous review is a known anonymous harasser in the fencing community who believes herself to be discrete when at this point it's an open secret who the malicious slandering originates from. Annamaria is in fact knowledgeable, an excellent ref and coach, and has more clients than this "Evelyn" person lets on. read more

I was extremely lucky when around a year and a half ago, I decided to try my hand at fencing again. This was the first time that I fenced Sabre and as an adult, I feared a little for the experience curve as well as the opposition standing before me encountering the other adults (and students) that would quite positively, drown me in their talent. However, I found myself in a place that was so welcoming with a growth mindset centered with Annamaria that I constantly was able to anchor myself and grow in my fencing and athleticism. This club means a lot to me. Through them I was able to move again, faster, stronger, and more agile, even with a history of traumatic injuries. While this sport is a fantastic exercise for anyone, it has taught me the love for other's success, for the knowledge that other students have towards fencing, and my own discipline to understand when my emotions are clouding my ability to perform at my best. Fencing should be for everyone, Annamaria and the club really exemplify that. read more
