One thing you must do in your life-time is visit an auction. Whether you're a serious buyer or seller these places are fascinating. I had the opportunity of visiting Fellows with a friend who's into this sort of thing and I was impressed with the professionalism of how things are done. Quite traditional, using techniques of old to sell all manner of things called "lots". In the catalog on today's visit were old watches, antique clocks, framed pictures, furniture, jewellery, the book was full of interesting things. It's exciting stuff when the auction is in full swing and becomes extremely competitive as thousands of pounds are spent in minutes. As well as auctions for watches, fine art, antiques, silver, coins, medals, toys and dolls, Fellows have added vintage jewellery to their roster. My interest in Fellows came when I started running vintage events although have always had more than a passing interest with vintage jewellery. Having never been to an auction, it's safe to say I was petrified the Monday morning I walked into this auction house in Birmingham's jewellery quarter. It really did help that the lovely people from Fellows (Louise, Mary, Stephanie - all very friendly and helpful) had invited me into the preview evening (with champagne indeed!) so I got to glimpse at what I may like to bid for to re-start my vintage jewellery collection. This is the worst, most unprofessional auction house I have ever used. I'm 42 and have purchased items in hundreds of auctions. These people are just unscrupulous, and dishonest. The website is confusing when you try to register...telling you after you register that you will be able to bid in their auctions. Then if you wait until the day of the auction to bid, you find that you can't, until you send two forms of id. No auction house should EVER need two forms of id, and if so they should tell you upon registering to bid!!! Fellows needs to reevaluate themselves and figure out how to respect to collectors and consigners alike. Otherwise, close your doors and go away.....shame on you Fellows.....SHAME. read more

If I could give less, I would. I was shocked and dismayed at the way we have been treated by Fellows, my partner took a rug in we were cosidering putting on auction and was deviously misled by the person she dealt with, into thinking they would "research it" first and get back to her with results and further discussion. This never happened - next we knew, a catalogue arrived in the post and the rug was listed in it with a very poor quality photo and a low reserve - none of which had been discussed. On contacting them to withdraw my partner was subjected to a torrent of abuse and vitriol and threats from "Mark" . I collected the rug today and was charged over £70 for their dishonesty in "withdrawal fees". I have arrived home to find they have ripped off the little lead seal on the edge of the rug, causing damage in ripping it off......... Avoid them, the company might have been around for a long time but there are some people there with dubious and disingenuous practices. read more

Absolutely over the top Customer Service! I live in Las Vegas Nevada US and have been doing business with Fellows for about a year now as a buying customer and I must say that they have provided me with the best auction experiences that I have ever had both here in the US and abroad. I have never seen such transparency in a lot description as with Fellows. Even if there is a hairline scratch that can't be seen without a 10 mag loupe, they will disclose it in the listing description. No other auction house that I have done business with (and I have done so with hundreds of them around the globe) go's out of their way to explain in such detail, everything you need to know about the item which you are looking at in their on-line catalogue. And then, if you are lucky enough to win which is difficult due to the quality of the listing and the trust that Fellows has earned, items do tend to go to their high estimate and a lot of the time, well over the estimate and when you do win, if you live outside of the UK, they not only do the shipping in-house, they cover the costs as well, (Free Shipping), this is unheard of!! I just went through a situation where I had bid on and won an item from another auction house in London called Bloomsbury where I had experienced customer neglect at its height. After pleading with them for help with shipping my item to the US, they had repeated to me each time, "It is not our policy". I would not have even asked a second time if it were not for the average quote of $200. US which I received from several different London based shipping company's. When I had told them of the astronomical charges I would incur having to have a company pick it up and ship it for me and is there any way they might be able to make an exception and just drop the tiny 2 oz box in a padded envelope for me, they responded with, "It is not our policy". At this time, I contacted Fellows for some advice, explaining my situation which they were very surprised to the point where they offered to ship my item from Bloomsbury for me if Bloomsbury could get it to them. "Fellows also mentioned that they would ship it to me free of cost" because I am a previous customer. So, once again, I messaged Bloomsbury to inform them of this when they told me that "It is not our policy". They wouldn't even send it down the street to Fellows. If there was a minus 1 they would receive it. They had an item and said they would sell it for between 30 and 50 pounds, it was sold for 32.00 pounds. The cheque received was 12.66, go with them at your peril, they advised of a commission fee of what you would expect and was shocked at having being charged for an illustration fee of 12 pounds. They were contacted and agreed to refund the £12 but alas that has not transpired. Be warned they are not transparent with explaining the charges to you. read more
