Time to reintroduce myself to Yelp since it's been ages since I've shared a review on this site, but I've found some solace with a great place: welcome to Fellow Barber, in the West Village (I'll call it Fellow from here on out). This Fellow location is located at the edge of West Village, and the Meatpacking District, and it's nestled atop a 3 story apartment red building. The business, in one shape or another, has *always* been a barber shop for around (since the 1960s), and I can recall Fellow has been here since around late 2013 under this business name, so it's on its way to being a decade old at this point from my perspective. Inside the shop, there's 6 wooden chairs to sit & wait on inc. a bench, and 8 barber chairs for the at most 8 hair stylists that can be on duty. The right side has a display shelf of select products that can be purchased, and in addition to a shampoo sink in the rear left corner, looks like a standard shop. The left corner has the front desk where you check in (if you've booked in advance) or can walk in and request a haircut, and when your finished with your service (or want to buy something), pay there. Behind that, there's the price wall for services, with 3 columns depending on who's your barber of the day (helpful if you're a first timer). There's also Venmo QR codes that has the name/photo of your barber if you want to tip them cashless, you can pay for your service with either a credit card, cash, or Fellow Gift Card (for services, not online products). You can tip cash too! There's three ranks of barbers here: Junior Barbers (beginners/trainees), Fellow Barber (regulars, those with a few years experience), and Senior Barber (experienced hair stylists with years of experience, good marks, high praise). Pricing can differ depending on the barber you choose or if one's readily available for walk-ins and of course the service and expertise/rank they have. Some barbers can't do certain services, like a straight razor shave or a Benjamin Button Facial, so there's occasions only ~3 barbers out of 20 posted can do that if you want. For instance a regular haircut service (haircut + shampoo + hot towel) starts at 55$, but it can be as high as 75$ with certain (experienced) barbers. My go-to haircut for instance is a Haircut with Flake No More Scalp Facial (shampoo/conditioner/facial + haircut + hot towel), it would start at 80$, but expended barbers can do it for 121$. For me, I've only had experience with two barbers: Tenisha F., and Beth G., so I'll base this review's premise on both of those two female hair stylists & what they've done for me. I would recommend, even for first timers, to book in advance online because if you walk in and you're paired off with someone, the initial shock could be a lot if you have a service out of your budget. With some expectations, you too might like your time here! Also, if you've booked ahead, try not to be late or no show if you didn't cancel as you'll be charged (with the credit/debit card on file)! There's a 12 hour window where if you cancel (or reschedule) within that, there's a 50% charge of your service, and if you either cancel/reschedule within 12 hours, or don't show up at all, its a full charge for your haircut you didn't receive. Of course, it's your responsibility, but when in doubt, cancel in an appropriate time if you can't make it. There's a 10 minute grace period when checking in prior to your scheduled service, so make sure to come promptly, as tardiness also affects the next person in line too. Although I don't have any photos of my haircuts with Beth yet, I did share one photo of my haircut with Tenisha I had from summer 2022, it was great, and she did a fantastic job taking care of my hair & full beard trim at the time. A bit regrettable that my schedule doesn't line up with Tenisha's and I'd prefer this location than SoHo, but I'm in good hands with Beth. All I can say with the 7 visits & 6 months I've known her so far, very little to say in the realm of disappointments and high praise all around. As for Beth, I can concur with others: she's amazing, worth the time to chat for an hour and have nearly immaculate haircuts, and as with others who work here, personifies the diverse culture of Fellow. Hopefully there'll come a time and place when I can have a photo of my service from her in the future! Also to mention, Fellow does run a "pay what you can" program that's been running since November 2020, the program is really helpful for beginners/Junior Barbers: give them business and experience, and with that, you can pay what you want (40$ base cost for a Classic Haircut): can be something like 100$, can be less to the haircut, your choice. I do take care of the people giving me a haircut even if they're not Junior Barbers, but I'm glad this is available for people who don't have the means to pay for a haircut, or help Junior Barbers eventually graduate to a Fellow. read more

I recommend Fellow Barber, specifically Nike. I benefited from a fine, efficient haircut. I was a walk in, because I had an hour of free time after a business meeting ended early and a family night out was due to start with dinner. I was accepted the next availability, which is risky. But it worked out. I'd go again. This is a place that feels like people are regulars. It reminded me of the movie Eastern Promises minus the murder. That is a compliment. It feels like a club. Nike is new. She started eight months ago. She is excellent. I only needed a trim. It is Asian hair, bristly if short. She handled it with no problem. My wife approved. She is a more demanding judge. All I can say is...BETH. Get your hair cut by this legend just once and you'll never dream of going anywhere else. Beth has actually been cutting my hair for four years now, since we both lived in San Francisco. She's the first person who I ever felt really learned the nuances of (read: issues with) my hair, and she's actually the one who recommended I start finasteride treatments. I was always afraid to go longer on top, but thanks to Beth's tips, it ultimately grew back in, even thicker, so there was more for her to work with. The cuts just got better and better, and her ability to buzz the most absolute perfect fade is unreal. She's a truly gifted professional (and lovely person!), and I'm not even kidding when I say that I fly 3,000 miles to have her cut my hair / time my visits home to the West Village just so I can get an appt with her. I think of it this way, If you have one more haircut left until the end of the year. started the holiday season looking good with a haircut at Fellow Barber. I guess what clinched the 5 star deal? They had the ABBA channel playing on the stereo system. (Sorry, I'm an 80s guy) I walk in and the place is crowded. I walk up to the counter and ask how long is the wait? 30 minutes but it will go quickly. Sure enough, 30 minutes go by and my barber is ready for me. I tel him how I'd like my hair cut. Now this is very important. I'm paying for a service and I'd like my hair cut certain way. If your a guy who just says "Gimme a trim" then your on your own. The barber is carefully cutting, trimming and taking his time. No buzzer here, they are old school hair professionals. Here is the best part, they are using all their hair products on you. I like what they used and how my hair looked so I am picking up their hair gel. After all said and done? A hot, mentholated towel for my face. I feel relaxed and am happy with my haircut. We came to the chelsea market branch asking for a walk-in haircut, the lady was super nice told us we should go to the other branch , and that the haircut should cost 36$. So we went to west village , they welcome us. The barber was great, cut with scissors, and with attention. After the haircut he suggested beard trim so we said ok ( our fault we didn't ask the price. ) beard trim was nice, the cut was good and spoiling. Then we got to the cushier ,BIG SURPRISE- 86$! For the past few years, I had been getting my hair cut at a high end Midtown salon. The haircut and the customer service were always excellent. However, I looked at the amount of money it cost me and I decided to re-evaluate. I looked up FSC on Yelp and saw plenty of good reviews, so I figured what the heck. FSC Barber is not a salon, it is a barber shop. However, it is the West Village, so it is very "vintage" and the décor is a bit "distressed". There is a tile floor with lots of woodwork. You get a haircut in old barber chairs. There is no dance music playing in the background, usually rock, often 80's new wave. You can get just a haircut, which includes a straight razor shave of the back of your neck or you can get the cut plus a straight razor shave of your face (hot towels, hot shaving cream...fantastic). The staff are all trained barbers and I think have been very well vetted, as their barbers perfectly knock out all kinds of cuts with very specific, detailed instructions from the customer. My haircut was about $40 or so. This is a lot less than I was paying uptown. Some guys complain about paying more than $15, but if you want more than a basic high and tight, you have to pay a bit more and you get a lot more at FSC. After several haircuts over the past 6-7 months, my haircuts have come out perfectly every time (ask for Kathleen - she is great). read more

I don't really love reading or writing negative reviews but I have to write this one because I wish I would have paid attention to the reviews and not just got any random barber. $55 is a hefty amount for a cut, even in NYC, and I definitely expect professionalism and accuracy at this price point. The front desk was fantastic. The person who works these was impeccable and delightful. I wish I could say the same about the barber I got. I came in with reference photos to get the same haircut that I had previously gotten and he said he could do it. I tried to elaborate on the complexity but he didn't care. Honestly, post haircut I'm really considering just buzzing all my hair and starting all over. He trimmed the back triple the shortness that I requested, couldn't do a simple fade on the side into the top, and complained that my hair was "too thick" (I'm Latino) and just went to town with the texturizer (unnecessary and destroys my natural waves)--something I never asked for. I'm so tired of barbers acting like they know what they're doing even when the person in the chair is trying to give clear instructions. Also in conversation he had so much negativity to share about my profession which he asked me about?? He mentioned that he had cut hair since 2004 but honestly cut my own head like he'd been only cutting hair for 20:04 minutes. Saw Stan. Paid $65 because he's a senior barber. It was only 4:30 but he said he was finishing up for the day. He cut my hair in 20 minutes and gave off a reluctant vibe about making adjustments. Now my hair is super poofy on one side. That's $20 speed haircut stuff, not a $65 haircut. And it was my 20 yr high school reunion the next day, and I told him that! I used to get my cut from Robert, who does an amazing job. There are others that do good work as well. But as others have mentioned, a lot of the good barbers have left. The last few times I went there I was paying a lot of money for a side parted haircut that wasn't anything out of the ordinary at all. I really wanted to like this place but I'll never come back. The chap who cut my hair simply didn't follow instructions and did whatever he bloody well pleased despite my protest. I asked for just a little off the side and max half inch off the top. As soon as I saw him snipped two inches, I asked what he was doing and he said I need to do so because you'll look lumpy. Well, now the other side is longer, you muppet. Plus, he never cleaned up my sides and when I paid at the register I voiced my concerns. The barber came over and said he could fix it but I wouldn't let him touch my hair again and bedsides, I have to complain to get a simple side trim? Just want to drop a review here about Alicia Tippin. She is just a bit ... rude. I brought my 12 year old son to her for a haircut, and he and I struggled to explain what he wanted done with his hair--it's always hard with a kind of shy kid, and I don't know the proper terminology--and she just radiated impatience, really just shimmered with it, cutting me off and almost twisting my words rather than trying to understand what I was saying. The haircut he got was fine--it was kind of a mushroom cap--and I would have asked her to take some more off the sides but she dumped my kid with me and walked away before I could look at his head from all sides. I don't know: maybe she's better with adults or doesn't like parents getting involved, or something, but the whole thing was unpleasant and the haircut isn't *at all* worth nearly $100. I'd have to say the cut really depends on who you get. Robert does an excellent fade and I would recommend him. When Robert was booked, I've gotten it cut from other guys who were more mediocre. Overall, even though I do get a good cut, I can't say it is worth $70. The experience is pretty standard and the space itself, while hip, is always busy and doesn't really feel personal. The barbers are decent but for most men's haircuts, I don't think they are any better than what you can get at a cheaper barber so therefore the value just isn't there. read more
