The following is my opinion and experience of working with Jacob Gurwitz. Portions of this review are confirmed in an article in the Mercury, Reading Pa.
After hiring Jacob Gurwitz, I found him extremely difficult, stubborn and impossible to work with.
On February 01, 2017 my godson who was in college was drag racing with his two good friends, the girl was four months pregnant, both were high on drugs but not my godson. The car skidded and crashed, his two friends were killed.
My godson was charged with third degree murder and felonies.
I hired Jacob Gurwitz of the firm Feeney and Gurwitz, 500 Court Street, Reading, Pa. I was charged $35,000 payable in advance, the price was based on the complexity of the case.
Gurwitz terrified my godson when he told him the sentence could be sixty years and without any explanation or reason insisted my godson plead guilty. I gave Gurwitz a copy of the conversation between my godson and the girl, in which she said she wanted to go racing and sit in the front seat to photograph my godson and the race. He threw it back and said it mentioned drugs and therefore would not help the case. My godson's toxicology report showed no drugs, Gurwitz did not offer this information to the judge.
When I started to speak of my godson's character, Gurwitz stopped my testimony and took me by the hand (I am blind) and led me off the stand stating my testimony was not necessary because it would be redundant of what the judge already heard. Obviously Gurwitz had no idea or cared what I was going to say, he just stood there not saying a word, Gurwitz offered no defense to the judge. The sentence was 15 1/2 years.
Afterwards I obtained new consul and we appealed the sentence. We presented witnesses and a mediation specialist who had a report of Shone's childhood. Upon hearing the testimony and reading the report for the first time, the judge said he was unaware of my godson's past and that it was one of the worst cases of child abuse he ever heard. Gurwitz never gave any of this information to the judge.
The judge then lowered the sentence to nine years.
I believe because Gurwitz refused to go to trial my godson lost the possibility of a lesser sentence or perhaps a not guilty verdict.
Obviously I would never recommend Gurwitz. read more
