    Mobile food bank

I follow Feeding NE Florida on IG. I saw a post last week regarding volunteer opportunities on the MLK holiday and thought what a great way to celebrate by serving others. I went to their website and registered for a mobile food bank distribution event at Mt Ararat Church on the northside. When I arrived there were already several cars in line to pick up food. The volunteers took turns unpacking the bulk food, packing boxes, breaking down empty boxes and handing out the boxes to those in need. We packed fresh carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, squash, mushrooms and bananas. As well as mac and cheese and juice. There was also a meat station and some desserts. All the volunteers wore masks which made me feel safe. Gloves were provided for handling the food. The cars came through and the volunteers placed the food either in the backseat or trunk of their car. My goal for 2021 is to volunteer in some way at least once a month. I am off to a good start. And I challenge my Yelp friends to do the same;)

During National Volunteer Week I joined a few colleagues and about 25 other volunteers on a weekend morning at Feeding Northeast Florida. Before we began, they provided a little rundown of the operation and I was impressed! They partner with about 200 agencies to repurpose donated food that is then inspected and distributed to the community. Northeast Florida has approximately 270,000 food insecure people, which includes 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 4 children. After a brief introduction, we divvied up tasks and got to work inspecting and sorting frozen food items. Everyone was working hard and we ended up finishing ahead of schedule. We sorted 14,513 pounds of food, which they mentioned would provide approximately 12,094 meals to our community. This was a great experience and I am honored to be one of the 10,000 volunteers a year who join Feeding NE Florida's efforts to make good food affordable and accessible.

Feeding Northeast Florida maintains a well-run and organized warehouse that accepts food donations from area contributors like Publix, and other area grocers and businesses. They accept, check, sort and deliver food to all of the area food banks as well as directly to the people in the communities through their mobile food banks. The staff is very friendly and it is obvious they truly care about the services they are providing. They made the volunteers feel welcome and appreciated and made sure that everyone was properly trained. This is an incredible service to the community.

My coworkers and I cane to volunteer last week and we had an amazing afternoon. This is my 2nd time volunteering and have to say that it's a great place. The first time was a couple years ago and it seemed like your typical non profits doing everything they can on pennies. This time it's still a non profit doing all the can for least expense and budget but they have really stepped up game for volunteer registration, etc. the coordinators were funny and engaging and made the afternoon go buy quickly. One of the executive leadership cake out and thanked us and told us how much our time means to them and being able to support and provide assistance to the food insufficient neighbors around us. We packed 1300 meal kicks while listening to music, dancing and laughing!! If you and friends and coworkers are looking for a great place to be philanthropic give this place a try!!

I am a firm believer that everyone should volunteer locally for their community. There is so much need for service across so many non-profits it isn't hard to find something that you are passionate about! I signed up with a handful of Yelp friends to sort food and help create meals for the entire region. You create a profile online and sign up, when you arrive there is a parking lot for volunteers and you find yourself inside checking in, washing your hands, putting on gloves and getting a brief safety meeting before being assigned to an area to sort. We did frozen foods and there were so many of us we made short work of it! Finishing at about an hour and a half! We sorted almost 7000 lbs of food! Creating over 5000 meals. The foods that were not suitable for human consumption went to animals at rescue centers- animals like big cats and more! I loved that tidbit of info! The box for disqualified food was referred to as the Lion box! Good Stuff. I can see myself doing this a few times a year! Not my first time sorting food for a food bank, however this operation was much larger than where I volunteered in my previous hometown.

The animals seem well taken care of and happy. The have mostly tigers but also a lion and some smaller cats. They even have two foxes and two bears! This is different than a zoo, because they have these animals as a way to save them. Some of them were from private owners and some were form closed zoos. The workers and volunteers were all happy as well.

You've never been to a place like this before... and at first, I wasn't even sure what to expect…read more The sign outside is nicely done, but when you walk in, the tables and chairs look like they're 50 years old... clean and organized, but the area clearly needs an upgrade. But that's actually the point... every dollar this nonprofit earns goes directly to animal care, facilities, and expansion. Nothing is wasted on appearances. And that mindset defines everything about this place. We signed up for a tour and arrived early to walk around a bit on our own. By chance, we ran into Curt Logiudice, the founder and owner of the sanctuary... a remarkable man who has devoted his life to this mission. Hearing him explain how it started, how it's grown, and his vision for the future was inspiring. Watching him interact with the bear they have was priceless... playful, natural, and full of trust. You couldn't tell who was enjoying it more... Curt or the bear. What they're doing here is truly admirable. Their mission is the rescue of exotic animals from serious and often tragic situations. Once an animal arrives at Catty Shack Ranch, it has a home for life. They do not breed, trade, sell, or buy animals. The sanctuary is home to tigers, a bear, lions, pumas, leopards, lynx, foxes, and coatimundis... all cared for with dignity and respect. The guided tour is absolutely worth it. The staff is knowledgeable, the experience is educational, and you get surprisingly close to the animals while still feeling completely safe. The atmosphere is calm, respectful, and not overcrowded. I noticed families with kids whose eyes were wide with amazement... it's that kind of place. This is privately funded, and even veterinarians volunteer their time to care for animals in need of medical treatment. If you see Curt on the grounds... and you probably will... stop and talk to him. His passion, humility, and genuine love for these animals is unmistakable. Please visit. Please support this place. What they're doing here truly matters. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
