This is also a con because it makes "cliques" more apparent. Pros: Parent-teacher relationships are strong. Attached to the church so there is no walking outside during inclement weather. Nuns still teach and run the school, this is less common in some other Catholic schools. Convenient for local children. Has after school program. CORA is available to tutor children who are having trouble, this happens during school hours. Cons: Costly, there are even charges if your child stays for lunch (which last I remember is held in the classrooms since there is no proper cafeteria.) Lack of after school activities, and those that do exist are expensive. Extracurricular classes are poor, in particular gym, which is held in the chilly basement of the church. Small class sizes mean advanced students are held back. To keep them busy they are asked to help less advanced students. Most of the student body lives in the area and graduates to Archbishop Ryan. Religion is held in high regard, and is very prevalent in the classroom. By attending this school, CCD is not mandatory as you study for and receive the sacraments through their church.

I have been sending her here for 2 years now and she will more than likely continue coming here up until 5th grade. The staff is all really nice and seem to be teaching my daughter a lot. I can see a huge progression in both reading and math and my daughter actually enjoys going to school. There are so many good things going on with this school, like they just installed security cameras and last year the roof was redone. Although this is a public school, they are making the necessary changes so that our children remain safe in their learning environment. They have a lot of activities and things for parents to involve themselves with the school and their children's lives, from fundraisers for the home and school and parent round table meetings to improve the school. The school is very diverse so your child has the chance to be around a melting pot of cultures and races. Cons: I had an issue last year with my daughter being bullied and the school sorta intervened but I feel like they need to take bullying more seriously and focus on stopping the bullying when it occurs. Another downfall to this school is the main office, whenever I go to the main office to pick my daughter up they take forever and if i have a set appointment time for her, they take so long actually getting her to come down and i have to speed like a maniac to get there in time. I usually come about 30 minutes earlier just because I know it will take a while to sign her out! I also have some issues with the office women, a few times their attitude was just unwelcoming and terrible. If they are working with parents of the children who attend there, they should be a little nicer.

I had transferred to this school froom Hamilton Disston public school. That gives St Josaphat 3 stars right off the bat. The teachers were always helpful and seemed to genuinely care about their students' progress. There was no bullying or fighting I can remember among any students in the 6 years I was there. One of my favorite parts, and what may also be a big selling point for parents considering sending their children here, is the inclusion of the Ukrainian language in the curriculum. I can't speak for other students, but not only did I feel this gave me a solid foundation for learning other languages later on, but I also found it very interesting as a young student. Also included are lessons on Ukrainian history and culture, including the making of traditional Easter eggs and other crafts. Aside from that, the normal curriculum was more than adequate from what I remember, although I can't fairly compare them to public schools due to lack of experience. I can say the teachers were very qualified - they knew what they were talking about (not "book-teaching") and encouraged class participation. The negatives: If you do not want our child to learn Catholic theology, this school is not for you (although the hard-core nuns have gone by now) The first Friday of every month we had mass in the chapel in the basement. It is a popular misconception that the coldest place in the continental United States is International Falls, Minnesota. This distinction belongs to the St Josaphat school chapel. Combine that with sitting on METAL chairs, it was as if they were really trying to make you think of your sins. Towards the end, there seemed to be high teacher turnover. Several teachers would be different year to year. Not sure if this is still the case.

Most teachers are disrespectful and unkind. The school water fountains are always either not working, the water is warm, and/or have a dirty filter. For tests, most of the questions are not provided for studying beforehand/on the study guide. The students are always using foul language, hitting each other, talking inappropriately, bullying each other, or genuinely not paying attention in class. The teachers only worry about their pay and not for the students sake of education. The teachers also do not reach out to parents as much as I'd appreciate. There are many bad teachers. For example, Mrs. Roth. She is unkind towards students and always yelling and touching them. She is also extremely disrespectful in general. Mrs. Fox (I think that is her name) yells a lot at her students and is not very respectful. Mrs. Ruppert does not properly educate her students. Mrs. Gale is most of the time rude. The school lunch is very horrible. When they come home from school on half days and bring a to-go lunch, it is overly disgusting. Even though they think they are doing good with the fruit cups/juice and cranberries, the food they make is why child obesity increases (sorry not sorry!!). The school air conditioning/heating is always to sometimes broken or not working well. There are probably more reasons but that's all I was told by my daughter and her friends during a 45 minute car trip.

There are only a handful of teachers that teach because their heart is in it. No one really wants to DO THEIR JOB!! Also there were 2 homework assignments all year! THEY DO NOT GIVE CHILDREN HOMEWORK to do which is insane to me. (I had to go to target and order my daughter workbooks. I assigned 2-5 sheets a day depending on how challenging they were.) The school is SO DATED ( THE DISTRICT INVESTS NO MONEY INTO THIS SCHOOL!!! They barely have air conditioner so they send the kids home early when it's really hot outside. This school doesn't care about the youth it's more than evident... my child attended for 4 yrs and in my experience they get worse and worse EVERY YEAR. If you care for you child just skip this entire school. Literally just a babysitter from 7:30 - 3:09. I just want to thank the school for ( BEING SO BAD IT) encouraged our move to FLORDIA!! & The schools thus far here ( A PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE) !!!
