The cab I was picked up in was one of those explorer type vehicles (could have fit the government motorcade if it had all tinted windows). WHAT A STANDARD OF CHANGE FROM WHAT I THOUGHT A TAXI CAB ONCE WAS! The individual was really nice and we talked about his wife and how, we men, tend to get worn out from all the demands of life. LOL! He also told me of his upcoming "big fish" type of travel, $6k for a 3 day drop off and pick up for a customer. The taxi life is (using a gen z term to best describe this, might be out of context, but...) bussing. I even asked him how the introduction of Uber and Lyft had affected the taxi business and he stated that it led to a lot of them going out of business. He still has a stronghold because of his "loyal customer base." The only problem I have with this service is that the price is pretty steep. $4 a mile is pretty expensive. My itemized receipt: 40 for 8.8 miles (I think he rounded up) $4 for tax (when I think KY sales tax is like 6%, so somewhere around $2.20) $6 tip (I was kind of in a bind and was just glad someone could get me to work) $50 Just for comparison purposes: The vehicle I drive gets 31 mpg. If I were to drive the same distance, it would be 11/31 = 0.3549/gallons 0.3549 x 3.49 (gas price at the station I usually use) = $1.2386 IRS reimbursement rate 0.655/mile x 11 = $7.205 I would think reasonable would be around $25.

I'd been wanting to do…read morethis for ages and finally had a travel buddy who was interested in active outdoor fun thangs to do so we booked this to do on our way to the Gorge for a gal's week away. These are electric-assisted pedaled car things and it is really quite easy to do. You actually have to work the most to not go too hard or fast because there is no resistance except for the first few pedals to wake up the electric-assist. The scenery was absolutely lovely. The guides were warm and welcoming. You end up at the entrance to the railroad bridge over the river that you can see from Wild Turkey, which was a slight bummer...I would have DIED to go across the bridge, but I get it. Safety and whatever. LOL. It simply was a lovely time in gorgeous nature and I wish it was longer. Now I need to visit every Rail Explorers location and do them ALL. Hot tip: do considering bringing a towel or a booty pad to sit on. I wore black athletic pants so my sweaty butt from the hard plastic seats wasn't terribly noticeable. But you might benefit from some material between you and the seat.

Five years ago, we rode the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad, so I was a little surprised when I pulled into the same parking area and walked through the train platform. While I certainly wouldn't have minded riding the train again, she quickly said, "Nope. Not this time." As it turns out, you have to walk through the railway platform to get to Rail Explorers. And then we found ourselves checking in. I'd seen ads for Rail Explorers before and thought it looked pretty cool, so this was a very unexpected treat. Check-in is easy. The gift shop doubles as the check-in area, and, importantly, it's air conditioned. Keep that in mind. After checking in, we waited for the safety briefing. There are plenty of Adirondack chairs, tables, and umbrellas for your waiting comfort. All red. The Adirondack chairs are comfortable, but getting back out of one can become its own recreational activity. The seats are kind of low once you settle in, so keep someone nearby who loves you enough to help haul you back to a standing position. Each seating area also has a fire pit, making it a very pleasant place to wait for your ride/exercise session of the day. After the safety briefing, you board your rail car. Each one is labeled with the name of your party. There are Duo bikes with two side-by-side seats and Quad bikes with four seats. Once seated, you can put your belongings in the basket between the seats, buckle up, and start pedaling when you get the thumbs-up. The bikes are motor-assisted. This is important. Once you begin pedaling and reach a certain speed, the electric motor kicks in and helps you along. So no, you are not sentenced to an hour of Leg Day just to keep the thing moving. The motor does quite a bit of the work. You'll top out around 10 mph, and the breeze you create while moving feels surprisingly nice, especially on a warm day. The trip is an out-and-back route and takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes each way. When you reach the turnaround point near the bridge, you'll get off and have about 15 minutes to stretch your legs while the staff turns the rail bikes around on the track. After disembarking the Unexpected Leg Day Machine™, there are chairs, benches, and umbrellas where you can relax. You also get a great view of the now off-limits bridge and surrounding scenery. It's actually quite beautiful. We were told that during dusk and evening excursions they sometimes have fires going at the turnaround area, which sounds like it would make the experience even better. After your little intermission, it's back on the bike for the return trip. The motor assist really shines along the few slightly uphill portions of the route. Under normal circumstances, an incline means "pedal harder." Not here. The motor contributes quite a bit, so you never really feel like you're fighting your way uphill. About another 45 minutes later, you're back where you started. And then your ride is over. :( The staff was excellent throughout the experience. Friendly, organized, and clearly having fun with what they do. Honestly, it looks like it would be a fantastic summer job, assuming I were younger and significantly more ambitious. Rail Explorers was A LOT of fun, and nowhere near as torturous on my legs as I had imagined. One important piece of advice: Wear good walking or running shoes. Trust me. Your feet will send you a thank-you note later. All in all, it was a fantastic anniversary surprise, and I'd absolutely do it again.

Looking for something new to do on Labor Day weekend (also our Anniversary weekend), my wife ran…read moreacross the Bluegrass Railroad Museum. We've always loved doing things that are train-related, so this was an easy decision. Riding the train? Even better, as I've always loved train travel. They have the coach, first class, and the new open-air cars. Those looked awesome, but since it was our anniversary weekend we were looking for a bit more. "A bit more" meant we got to rid in The Cab with the engineers! It was a totally awesome experience, sitting, literally, at the front of the train with the guys making the thing go. As I recall the engineers were Robert and Steve, and were really nice guys. They were funny and informative, and it was cool to see the "behind the scenes" while the train was in motion. The Cab wasn't as big as I expected it to be and the controls weren't really high-tech, then again this was a pretty vintage engine. It was fun as we heard them calling out commands and statuses to each other and with the conductor at the rear of the train. The scenery along the way is beautiful. Horse farms and rolling fields make for post-card ready photographs, and the limestone cuts along the way make you realize just how much work went into getting the track built back during the civil war. We were also told that, while the railroad ties are replaced very 25 years, the iron rails are still the original rails that were laid back then. Once we got to the end of the track we ended up at the Kentucky River, which was seriously cool. While it's no longer viable for river crossings it's still an awesome thing to see. We stopped there for about 15 minutes to take pictures and to take in the scenery. Back on board the train and now the Engine is pushing the train from the rear and the engineers and conductor continued their calls, making sure things were moving safely. Once back at the station it was time to disembark and visit the museum and gift shop, which doubles as the ticket booth. They have a nice array of souvenirs to chose from for anyone at any age. The museum is a bit on the small side compared to others we've been to, but at the same time it's perfectly sized for their operation. There is also a model train exhibit in one of the stationary rail cars, and a few other cars to check out on the grounds. We really enjoyed our visit and train ride - especially riding in The Cab - and we'll be back again. Looking at other reviews it makes absolutely no sense why someone would give this a 1-star rating because it was, in every sense, and absolutely awesome experience.

I've been wanting to do this forever and I'm so glad I got the chance to do it with friends . The women that run the business are friendly and definitely have a sense of humor as well as a love for the paranormal. We were given a K2 meter to see if we could pick anything up along our travels . We definitely did pick up more than one blip on the radar . The history of Gratz Park and the surrounding area is super interesting and at times humorous. I think my favorite was the three ugly sisters houses . Although the history of the literacy center makes me want to take another tour and get in that building . You can definitely feel an energy around some of the houses on the tour. The icing on the cake for me was finding out at the end of the tour that at Transylvania University there's actually a mausoleum on the property.
