There are lots of Featherdown Farms in the UK; this one is Knaveswell Farm in Dorset. THey are holiday cabins for adventurous families set on real working farms; this is a dairy farm so you can get to see the herds being milked - a real eye opener for urban kids.
The cabins themselves are fantastic. They are basically very very posh tents - wooden structure, concrete foudnations, but canvas walls and roof - they feel more like something you would find in a colonial tented camp. There is running water and a wood burning stove in each tent, but you have to use gas lights as there is no electicity. Working loo in each tent too.
My son was three when we went and he loved it - you can collect eggs from teh chickens each day, go walking in the fields, the beach is not far, and then there is the fab COrfe Castle - great for a game of hide and seek.
My only complaint was that it RAINED constantly, which was a pain. And that all the other cabins were booked by people who knew each other, so my hope that my son would be able to make friends for the holiday was dashed - they were much older than him. Apart from that a great place for a family holiday - cheaper than hotels too. read more
