So glad to see that someone else is as baffled as I am that this station is so popular. To be…read morefair, I've never listened to this station at any time other than the morning. But that was more than enough. Eric, Kathy and Melissa are criminally annoying. Eric prattles on and dishes with the girls about Britney Spears, Mary Janes, fierce cosmos and pugs. But he doesn't _really_ know anything about this stuff because he is Straight (Richard Simmons), Straight (Charles Nelson Reilly), Straight (RuPaul). And Kathy and Melissa do their level best to set the women's movement back hundreds of years (respectively with inane ramblings and palpable lack of confidence) each time they open their mouths. Eric says, "The sun is a source of cold." Kathy says, "Really, Eric? Gawsh, I never thought of that before. Wooaaaooww. Gigglegiggle." Melissa says, "Um, no I don't think..." Eric says, "Aren't you old and desperate for a man?" Melissa shuts up. How do people listen to this day in and day out? When I first moved to Chicago, my clock radio was set on this frequency from my previous city of residence. The one positive I can say about THA MIXXX is that as soon as I heard the inanity, I would bolt out of bed to turn the radio off. So, thanks Eric & Kathy, for making sure that I started my day with a fright and great annoyance but, at least, I got out of bed promptly.

If you don't believe me- just go back…read moreto watching reruns of Loni Anderson and WKRP in Cincinnati, the episode that has 4 old OLD old people protest in studio to change back to easy morgue music. I grew up too at a time when music was King in Chicago, the age of stations like Q101, B96 and the new era of shook jocks like Man Cow in the Morning. I am so glad that I was a teacher in Cicero and listened to him on the way to work- talking explicitly about poop-cicles before having to teach makes things in perspective like no other. So when people give negative comments- I just don't get it. You are not 17 any more growing up locked in your room grounded, there is this thing called the internet, SerousXM radio, CD players, Ipods and a ton of other toys to listen to exactly what you want when you want it if you drive, walk or commute. Performance Corner I am really happy that stations now have the ability and means to give great performances through the net offered by their stations. Performance Corner is a chance for me to hear and now even see what was filmed live. I can see my friends or friends of my friends that have now bands that are on the tour scene in Chicago. Even though I am in Honolulu - I'm able to view shows that really interest me. I remember having to stay up way too late one night in High School to hear DJ Russ Harris (a friend) first battle on the DJ mix off competitions and then preform his sets live on air. I had to stay up til like 3 am or something for some but it was crazy cool to me to do that.... NOW all I would have to do is stream at 3 pm in the lazy afternoon or whenever I wanted to repeatedly cause it is on-line. I'm able to see bands play in the Performance Corner and watch them anywhere. When I am back in Chicago I scan and listen to the old radio stations that I used to listen to- and guess what? DJ have changed, radio station formats have changed, things change. I get that. Was it as good as when the station first started? No! But that doesn't mean that they aren't doing their thing. They seem to have more contests. Hey I'm up to try to win tickets- well that is how they try to get listeners and loyal listeners. They do this or that contest and try to get listeners. Myself- I want to hear a good mix of music played, I'm rare and will seek out a station that I like and listen on the internet occasionally. Others know that people are picky, so they do what they think best. No, I don't like Eric and Kathy, but hey I'm not a daily listener as I said. I like many other younger/ savey listeners are listening more targeted and specifically for a specific reason, it may be different for each real listener. Internet has changed much in the industry and I do not fault stations. I do wish they were caught in a perfect time bubble that I could listen to and remember simpler times whenever I needed to and a dj that could relate to me perfectly- I also know that is not grounded in reality. Til then, I pick and choose those that I like and enjoy the Performance Corner especially cause I know friends or friends of friends on it.

I hope the local personalities are enjoying show time while they can, as less than a month, Dave Eanet will be retuning with another season of Northwestern Football, then basketball once their season gets going, then Chicago Bears will return for another season, which meats the return of Hamp and O'B doing their pre and post game shows, and once Chicago Blackhawks start their season, plus they will be picking up Chicago White Sox's games when they come in conflict with the Chicago Bears games. And then picking up The Verdict with Ted Cruz, is WLS AM or The Answer too busy to be the Chicago radio affiliate for the show on Sunday nights to air it? I hate to be so judgmental when it comes to musical tastes and art in general, but this is a review…read morewebsite based on peoples opinions, right? Right. So, basically, the simplest way I can sum up what this style of music does to me is to explain a real scenario that happened to me recently. Driving home from a long and even more agitating day of work than usual, I decide to try to relax myself through some mind-numbing music. I figure all of the BS going through my head can be squashed best by the musical stylings of John Tesh and Kenny G and the like. After all, it is smooth jazz- meant to relax the mind and the body. That is what it is designed for. That, or inspiring musicians to create their own version of adult film soundtracks. To my surprise, and only after about 10 minutes of listening, it did nothing but agitate me more. My anxiety levels grew rapidly. My heart rate began to rise. Sweat beaded on my brow. My jaw clenched tighter and tighter. I tried my best to shake it off, but I kept getting more and more wound up. My knuckles were whitening due to the death grip I had on the steering wheel. "This music is just too... weak... too... slow... too... soft... too... " I couldn't get my mind around it, and that only brought me more stress. I couldn't even properly drive at this point- my neck being too stiff to turn and check my rear view mirrors; my body petrified. Forget adult film soundtrack, this was the soundtrack to my own personal hell on an early Monday evening. I broke free from the grasp of the cooing saxophone solo that was bleeding my ears dry and changed the channel to XRT, and what was most likely either Coldplay, The Police, or U2 (because they have a quota of those three bands taking up no less than 60% of their play list at all times), and this monotonous, predictable and honestly very boring airplay they dish out is probably more of what I needed to allow my brain to decompress. So why the two stars? Like I said- I don't want to even pretend to be an authority on music. If it gives you pleasure to listen to smooth jazz- more power to you! But unless I plan on getting all amped up to rob a liquor store or something, I won't be having my radio dial turn to 87.7 FM.

Yes, of course the old station WNUA will be miss by me and other smooth jazz fans. But, glad to find out that I can still listen to some very nice smooth jazz music on my way to work and back.
