As for the adult training, I've gained confidence, awareness, and strength faster than I thought possible. I wouldn't train anywhere else, nor do I plan to stop.

Martin Luther King Jr. Park has a long history of social activities in Winter Haven. In the 1920's…read moreand 30's is was the site of Florida Citrus Festival which attracted thousands including president Calvin Coolidge. During WWII it was a prisoner of war camp that housed 250 German prisoners. Up until the 1990's many local children learned to swim from the park beach on to Lake Silver. In May of 1988 the park was dedicated to slain civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. a monument was erected in his honor. Every year there is a wreath laying ceremony. Improvements were added to the park that included picnic pavilions, a basketball court, a trail, and a playground on the west side of the park. There are also restrooms, a recreation center, and an outdoor theater. Events held throughout the year in the park include community concerts by the Winter Haven Symphony Orchestra, Easter sunrise service, easter egg hunts. and the annual Fourth of July fireworks. The Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team puts on shows on lake Silver which can be viewed from the park. This picturesque park was a pleasant place to spend some time outdoors. I took a scenic walk around the lake while admiring the view of Lake Silver. The well maintained open lawn is especially inviting for picnics and relaxing.

Walker moved to Lake Wales in 1917 as an agent for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad and he later opened a bakery. After the city renamed most of Walker Street to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. they agreed to rename Twin Lakes Park, Walker Park. I love the large trees dripping in Spanish moss that are typical for this part of Central Florida. They provide shade and beauty to the park. On the lake side there is a large pavilion with picnic tables. The playground area side is fenced in for safety. In addition to some modest playground equipment there are picnic tables, a red swing bench, and a water fountain. This was the perfect place to stretch my legs and recheck my route before heading out for the rest of the day.

South Central Park in Winter Haven is reminiscent of an old fashioned town square. It was once part…read moreof a larger, historic downtown park system dating back to 1884. In the early 1900's South Central Park was an important first stop to the little town of Harris Corners, now known as Winter Haven. What is now the park was an active railroad depot that brought people and business to the town. As automobiles replaced train travel, the park became a location to enjoy the outdoors, celebrate special events, and for the community to gather with neighbors and friends. In the 1950's City Commissioner Virginia Foley Miller made beautification of the park and downtown a priority. The Bowen family donated land for public use which allowed for creating a reimagined gathering space. In 2017 a construction, revitalization and design project headed by Pennoni was kicked off to transform the space by creating a versatile, safe, and attractive space for both day and night use. Amenities added to the park included LED lighting, decorative walls, planters, drinking fountains, and a visitor information kiosk. Today this downtown park hosts over 175 events per year. It is surrounded by the historic downtown district where you can dine and shop. One of the buildings across from the park is the very first Publix. I enjoyed visiting the park in December when all of the city holiday decorations were displayed. During the day it was a peaceful place to stop as I worked out my itinerary for the day while enjoying a caffeinated beverage from nearby Richards Fine Coffees. At night all of the beautiful decoration were lit up transforming the park in a holiday wonderland. South Central Park continues to serve as an important anchor to historic downtown Winter Haven.

This park is somewhat new, and a wonderful addition to Winter Haven. There is a mile long loop…read moretrail around the wetlands, where I could admire the nature around. I spotted a spoon bill, herons, and other birds in the water. I came as the sun was setting, so I had the best views, though I don't recommend staying until dark. There is also a route here in Pokémon Go, it spans the entire length of the loop, which is one mile. There are 2 bridges that cut across the water and a dock that overlooks a lake near the main facilities. There is a small pavilion with seating, a playground, and a restroom. There are also benches around the loop, enclosed trash bins, and a doggy station (though no trash bin at the station). I felt very safe here, as the trail is within view of the main road and houses, as well as other people on the path.

The Lake Conine Nature Park officially opened on May 13, 2025. Winter Haven had previously purchased the 32-acre property in 2010 with the mission of restoring the wetlands to benefit Lake Conine and the surrounding communities. The park was created in partnership between the City of Winter Haven, Polk County, State of Florida, and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The wetlands were formed to act as stormwater treatment cells. Through natural processes, water is collected and contaminants are removed preventing nutrients and oxygen depleting compounds from passing into Lake Conine. An added benefit of the ponds is that they attract wildlife like alligators, turtles, and native birds. Lake Conine Nature Park was designed to support recreation, environmental learning, and community connection. The park has a mile-long trail loop along the perimeter of the park along with smaller interior loops. There is also a kayak launch, shaded picnic pavilion, fishing pier, restrooms, and playground. During my walk I spotted a tricolor heron and adorable marsh rabbits. The Lake Conine Nature Park offers the community a wonderful place for wildlife watching. exercising, paddling, playing, fishing, and relaxing.

Lake Hartridge is part of the Northern Chain of Lakes that feeds into the Peace River. The ponds in the park act as stormwater treatment cells, Through natural processes, water is collected and contaminants are removed preventing nutrients and oxygen depleting compounds from passing into Lake Hartridge. An added benefit of the ponds is that they attract wildlife like alligators, turtles, and native birds. Other features of the park include a one third mile paved path for walking, jogging, and biking. There is a covered playground with a play fishing boat and several pavilions with picnic tables and grills. There is also a fishing pier. Dogs are welcome and there water fountains and waste clean bag stations. This charming park makes you feel far removed from busy Havendale Boulevard. I enjoyed the walking path and interpretative signs informing about the different plants and animals that live around the lake. This beautiful park is the perfect spot to bird watch, take the kids to play, exercise, and picnic. I especially love the lake view which is so peaceful and serene.
