A very fitting city for having coffee with desserts and snacks - 2 of 2…read more Fazer, or Karl Fazer, is one of the best known coffeehouse and dessert places in the Finnish capital. It appears there might be more than one location, with a few being almost too close to each other. I was trying to figure out which one is the main location. Once you find it, you will know that this is the feather in the cap of the Fazer brand. This Fazer coffeehouse is not just about getting something warm to drink and eat. It's an experience. This is a large Art Deco cafe' where they didn't skimp on decking out the exterior and the interior to be true to the genre and, of the places to sit, I wound up seating under a slightly domed glass ceiling that was beautiful, so it was no wonder I gravitated toward that part of the interior. They sell coffee, tea, and cakes, but also have sandwiches, chocolate, candy, and more. There are more bins and shelves with goods than you'd expect in a coffeehouse. They were slightly crowded a little later in the evening, but not excessively so. The service here was a little more curt than that at Roasberg, but they got the job done. I had a slice of berry flavored cake and a cup of decaf coffee since it was a little later in the evening. As soon as I saw Fazer's exterior and went inside, I knew that it would be a little more expensive. It's your job to restrain yourself and not treat it like a restaurant with a series of courses, instead opting for a hot drink and something sweet or savory. If the service was a little more upbeat and the prices were slightly more reasonable, it would get 5 stars from me. However, with what I drank and ate being good and with this being such a unique experience, it easily gets 4 stars. I'd gladly return if in this city again and I recommend visiting this landmark coffeehouse.

Very cute and modern looking cafe. Seating inside and outdoors available…read more Only a short walk from Hotel Arthur, Scandic Red, and the subway station. When you walk in you are greeted by a display case that shows an array of parties and cake slices. Staff was very friendly. I didn't spend much time browsing as I only had my eye on the prize- passion fruit cheesecake! Unlike an American style cheesecake, this had the texture of a mousse with a thin crust. The passion fruit flavor was lovely and a real treat. Can't wait to go back and try more items.

What a gem! I stumbled upon Café Silo after wandering around the island and figuring I needed a…read morecaffeine fix. The outdoor display of colorful chairs and warm blankets seemed inviting, so I headed right on in. The interior decoration is just as appealing, giving both a homey and modern look with candles at every table and black ceramic plates, contrasting with the sand-colored wooden decor. As is practically everyone in Finland, the café staff was warm and hospitable, being patient as I tried to shape my mouth accordingly to try and form the syllables to pronounce voisilmäpulla, or butter eye bun. I'm glad I was able to order one, considering they appeared to be in high demand and looked to be going fast as I stood on line! Among other Finnish favorites, there were also korvapuusti (cinnamon buns) and karjalanpiirakka (carelian pies). The voisilmäpulla was absolutely delicious, making me wonder if these are in fact, the best voisilmäpulla one can get in Helsinki, or even Finland (there appears to be no guide ranking where one can get the best ones, but if there were, I wouldn't be surprised if this topped the list). At the very least, they were the best ones I had during my stay in Finland. The bun was nice and fluffy, the cardamom giving just enough of a spice-twist at the end (excuse the slightly repulsive photo of the interior of the bun; I just wanted to prove how fluffy they were!). Thankfully, there wasn't too much butter to the point where the bun was soaked in the middle; it was just enough to give you the flavor but not the health consequences. Tea-selection is wide, and the rooibos was expectedly wonderful. A quiet and lovely hide-out on Suomenlinna, which would probably be a welcome sigh in the bustling summer season. Would love to go again!
