Now I'm thinking just because the position they hold, they think they can do whatever. I warned them I would be posting everything public because Elgin is known for their ways of whiteness.

Overall, our experience was good…read more Our wedding date was July 3rd (2009), so I called way in advance to make sure that would work out since it was a Friday before a major holiday and we wanted to get married in the early afternoon. This ended up working out fine for Judge Benton Eskew's schedule, so I went ahead and set things up with his secretary. I called back a couple of weeks before the wedding to confirm the date/time just to check, and I nearly passed out (really, at the time I had a heart condition that is now surgically corrected) when the secretary at first said she didn't have it down in her book. But then she checked the Judge's calendar, and our appointment was written down there. So everything was actually okay, it was just a bad scare (yep, that's why 4 stars and not 5). A few days before the wedding my now-husband and I went to get our marriage license. The employee we interacted with was very nice, she made friendly conversation with us while getting everything ready. We were given a funny little book about marriage, which was much more gender-equal than I expected. Our actual wedding went great. The Judge and the other employees were very friendly, and accommodating of the fact that we brought a small group with us. We were surprised that the Judge had a page of bible verses to read out before marrying us ... I realize that might bother others of course, and that's why I'm mentioning it, but it wasn't a big deal to us and probably made our families happy. He also spoke about the rings' symbolic function, etc. From what I'd previously heard about courthouse weddings, I had just been expecting something much more sterile/perfunctory/impersonal than what we got, so I was very happy. We have many great pictures from our ceremony (friends and family took them), when we were only expecting to have a few. When we later got our marriage certificate in the mail we received another happy surprise: it was actually nice to look at! We were planning on displaying it in our home anyway, but we expedited the process since the certificate was so pretty.

Grew up in Yoakum but never took the time to see what Gonzales had to offer. There were a few…read morehistorical plaques, memorial stones, and informational boards displayed on the property. The courthouse is also very close to Texas Heroes Square, Confederate Square, and the County Jail Museum. Definitely worth spending a few hours in downtown.

Quaint shops, pubs, restaurants, and of course bbq joints! Beautiful state park and Chisholm trail. Caldwell County Courthouse boasts extraordinary architectural elements. Just about 30-40 minutes from Austin, it makes for a perfect day trip or overnighter. Easily walkable. Friendly folks. Perfectly charming old west town.

I spent a week in Lockhart and checked out its splendor multiple times during my trip. While I didn't walk inside, the exterior is really what you care about. There are several signs outside of the courthouse that explains the history of the building so make sure to check them out! Beyond the architecture, the color scheme of the building is beautiful too.

This state historical site is such a cool place. It features ruins of Kreische Brewery (and the…read morestill standing home) as well as Monument Hill a tomb for those who died in the Dawson Massacre of September 1842. There is a beautiful overlook, and the grounds themselves are very well maintained. Only $5 per person for admission and leashed dogs are welcome. The Visitor Center has a few displays of relics that you won't want to miss! I do recommend wearing good shoes and carrying water if you are planning to walk down to the brewery. It's a bit steep in some places!

After paying a small fee to enter, we parked. The visitor's center has a small museum where you can learn all about the history of the park. It's a good way to kick things off. From there, you can hike around the park. Beyond getting a workout, you come across historical markers and other goodies along the way. Brewery ruins, a home, a statue, and more. You'll learn even more through this experience. I love these types of hikes: where you simultaneously learn and get a workout in.

Send your tax payment in via registered mail, yes there is a small charge, but the wait to pay in person is SO LONG, for me over an hour. My time is worth the few dollars instead of waiting for an hour. I previously lived in Harris Co & they had a quick EXPRESS drop off for payments that had a check made out. HARRIS CO was a county of millions, yet the wait was so short through express there. Why so long here, especially since I didn't wait until the last minute.? Here, they need a mystery shopper to prompt them to expedite the process. It is disgustingly slow.
