Slough Kebabs - Dining Room

Slough Kebabs

Somehow life's twists and turns allowed me to find my way to Slough. We were visiting the area for…read morea few days and I needed a lamb doner fix. After some research, I took a stroll to Slough Kebab, which is about a 15-20 min walk from the train station. Anyway we walk in to a vast takeout counter, but as we were dining in we were directed to the room on the right side with many open tables. They were busy cleaning, and as we sat we noticed the place was spotless. We ordered from our table, and of course, we ended up getting the lamb and chicken doners with chips as our side. There was a small and large option and we went with the small. When the plates arrived they looked like a large to us, but this place just has generous portions. The lamb was succulent and glistening, and the chicken was packed with flavor. We also had a fresh hot pita, garlic sauce, and spicy sauce on the side to accompany the meal. Everything was fantastic! We certainly couldn't finish all the food, but rest assured, it was thoroughly enjoyed. Only feedback I would have is perhaps offering the doner in a wrap form for easy lunch eating. The establishment was cash only on this visit, not sure if that is normal. Nevertheless, if my travels ever find me in Slough again, I would certainly return to indulge in the countless other menu items.

Nando's - Whole chicken cut into quarters and sides of rice

This was my first time ever at a Nando's and I'm not even going to lie, I loved it. If you're like…read moreme and have never been, Nando's does rotisserie style chicken with their own special peri-peri sauces that range from mild to wild (sort of). If you don't like chicken, they do have some healthy vegetarian things for you to check out. But you're here for chicken right? So when you come in, they'll give you a table & menus. When you decide you order at the counter and pay, and your food will be brought out. Things like silverware, drinks, sauce/condiments are self serve. I love that they have a hand wash sink right in the middle of the restaurant. It's great for cleaning up if you've gotten elbow deep in your meal and honestly, we can all use an extra hand wash or two, right? Also love the fact that you have beverage refills (almost unheard of) and ICE - and it's the very best chewable pellet ice. I opted for the 1/2 chicken "hot" with 2 sides (rice and peas) as recommended by the friendly staff and honestly it was excellent. My chicken was juicy and full of flavor. I appreciate that along with some spice heat, there was tons of flavor in the rub and sauce. We liked it so much that we bought some of the rub and sauce at a local Tesco to take home. Staff was super friendly and nice, the place was very clean and you can get beer or wine to make your visit extra cheeky!

I wouldn't call it "gourmet" but it was decent and way better than anything you'll get from McD's…read moreor BK. Tons of different toppings available, ranging from the usual blue cheese and bacon all the way to the far end of the spectrum - beetroot and pineapple. I would have gone with four stars, but I think the prices were too high. £7 for a basic burger, £3 for fries (enough to share with two or three) and £3 for a beer - £13 ($21) for a lunch. Veggie offerings available include Felafel and Mushroom. Chicken for those that don't eat red meat.

Gourmet Burger sounds like an oxymoron to me, but my daughter raved about the place so I tagged…read morealong to check it out (oh, and to pay of course. Parenthood...) I had a chili based burger, along with a portion of skinny fries. Someone else said in their review that a portion of fries was enough for 2 or 3 people but I suggest that's only true if they are 2 or 3 very skinny people. I'd get a portion each if I were you. The food was good, the fries were very skinny (think McDonalds but with an eating disorder) and tasted great. The burger is cooked to your preference with the standard being pink in the middle and it was tender and juicy. My burger lacked any real chili kick, but I find this is usually the case everywhere I go so maybe it's just me. So far so good right? So why only 3 stars? It's just too expensive for what you get. We had 2 burgers, 2 fries and 2 drinks and it cost £30. I could go to a pub and get 2 steaks with fries (and veg) and 2 drinks for less than that, and you know what they say. Why eat burger when you could have steak? I don't mind paying for a good meal but GBK just seemed like it was a bit of a rip off. Also, having sampled the delights of Dirty Burger I am now enlightened as to how ridiculously good a burger can be, and GBK didn't quite step up to the mark. (No Dirty Burger branch local to here, but worth the trek to London just to try one, or two, or three)
