Editing to add actual dates to the events described…read more I will update this rating if we ever get our final report, but the bottom line is we've been waiting close to eight weeks now to get a diagnosis and recommendation on how to resolve the front room of our house, which is apparently breaking off the rest of the house. Longer story: I was excited to work with Bitarchitects - they have great reviews, I appreciate that they are woman-owned, and in our initial conversations, they were so responsive and confident that they had all the necessary in-house expertise to figure out what was happening in the house we just bought. The structural engineer seemed great during the inspection on 9 July - spent lots of time at the house, took all the measurements, answered all my questions. We chatted about the fact that there is this crawl space under the front room that doesn't have an access panel, so you can't get underneath to inspect the stem walls. He told me he would have the report to me in a week. Six weeks later (18 August), we got the report. And the report said. . .we can't diagnose the problem without access to the crawl space under the front room. So question the first - WHY would that conclusion take six weeks? When it was known at the time of their visit? (It was actually known before that - the home inspector had included it in his report, which we had sent Bitarchitects in advance of their visit.) But okay, they said they could send someone out to create an access door to the crawl space, take some pictures, and then we would get a completed report. So that happened a week ago (28 August), and we've heard nothing. Almost eight weeks now since the inspection, meanwhile there are new cracks appearing in the floors and walls. Communication overall has been extremely frustrating. While assuring us that the (first) report was imminent, I was told several times "don't worry, your house is not falling down, you're not in danger." Which is great of course, but doesn't remotely address our concerns. I get answers to maybe 50% of the questions I ask (fairly reasonable questions, like "will cutting a door in our foundation create structural instability down the road?"), if fact, the only time they respond quickly is when they are asking for payment. I am so so disappointed and frustrated at this point, I don't even know what to do.

In both cases, Joe demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the permitting and construction process, the use of new and advanced techniques, and beginning -to-end collaboration with my wife and I. The first project was an expansion and complete reconstruction of our kitchen in Harbor Hills. The second project was a master bedroom, master bath and his and her closet addition to our waterfront home in Edgewater. What I think I like best about Joe is his commitment to continue to work with you from the first discussions through design iterations, permitting, and construction. For example, when we dug the foundation for the addition of the bedroom wing we discovered that the footings and foundation of the old home, built in 1927, was not up to standard. Joe examined the job site, assessed the foundation, and came up with a new design for the basement wall that abutted the old house, ensuring that the basement of both the old house and the addition would be stable and enduring. Throughout both projects, Joe would visit the work site occasionally, and would come when asked to look at any issue in a very timely way.

I ultimately chose Joe because of how he quoted the process and pricing for his services. The first of the three phases, providing as-built drawings of the project went just as easy as the first consultation. But that was the end of the positive experience. Joe told me it would be a little more expensive during the as-built measurement meeting because I wanted a 14' x 18' family room designed, instead of a 10' x 18' family room. He charged more than double the quoted price to provide a terrible "sketch" of an idea. While some of the ideas he provided were good ideas, he continued to over charge for sketches. The initial quote for layout plans was $1300. He has charged more than three times that amount even after a face to face meeting where I specifically told him that while his ideas were good, it shouldn't take 25 hours at $145/hr to come up with the ideas. I could have started construction and finished one entire new bathroom in the time he spent thinking about it. Now he wants to charge 75% more than the quoted amout for the construction plans and site plan. I have ceased all work with this hack that calls himself an architect. I built an entire custom house ten years ago. I didn't fully appreciate the builder's architect until now. Seriously appauled in Arnold MD

We have worked with Chris Tucker on several projects over the last ten years. The most recent…read moreproject was a rear screen porch and patio. After listened to our desires to reclaim our back yard from the mosquitos, Chris designed a slightly modern outdoor entertaining space off the back of our traditional 1920s American Foursquare. The results were the blend of the traditional screen porch (beadboard ceiling, ipe flooring) with modern features (recessed LED lighting, ceiling fans, all-weather speakers) creating a perfect bug-free entertaining space. Completing the project is a small patio containing a couple of chairs and our grill. We could't be happier with the way the project turned out! While the project went slightly longer than expected (don't they all!), the quality of the design and construction were worth the extra few weeks. Chris was very good at keeping us appraised of the progress during all phases of the project (design, permitting, change orders, inspections, etc.), answering our questions and concerns about building process, and incorporating our changes during construction. We will certainly use Mode 4 Architecture and Chris Tucker for any future projects at our house!
