The office made me make an appointment to have the paperwork filled out, and it still did not get filled out until I was not present. when it was sent back to my job it was not completed as discussed, and instead for maternity leave rather than currently. Debra refused to explain this to me herself but sent a nurse to tell me she "DECIDED" I didn't need it afterall, after I had already take 4 weeks off due to my hyperemesis. I would not recommend seeing her specially from this office. I was forced to return to work where I am now working unpaid as Debra suggested I take leave and use my sick days as with FMLA I could get those days back. obviously this was not the case and I've had no choice but to find another office. If she could treat me so poorly so early in my pregnancy, I can't imagine seeing her when I'm further along or during birth.

When the appointment was scheduled, I received a confirmation email and it was listed as a "new gyne exam". Having some apprehension about the appointment, I decided to give them a call yesterday, because I was not comfortable consenting to any sort of pelvic exam due to an an extensive history of sexual abuse. They explained that they would take a urine sample to confirm pregnancy, and that they required a vaginal exam, vaginal swab for STDs, cervical exam, cervical scraping (pap smear) to screen for cancer and check to make sure my cervix was favorable for pregnancy. They also stated that they would then conduct bloodwork for pregnancy. They said they saw in my notes that I wanted an ultrasound, but they don't do that in-office and I would have to schedule a separate appointment to be seen at the hospital for an ultrasound (this was not disclosed to me prior). I explained to them that I was not comfortable at all with any pelvic exam and the reasons why. They were very dismissive of my trauma and concerns and stated that the pelvic exam was a requirement for continuation of care. They also stated that no OB in their network would see me as a patient without these preliminary screenings. I re-iterated once more that this would not be possible due to the trigger of panic attacks and they still remained firm that it was a requirement to be their patient. I said "well, I guess I'm not going to be a patient then" and canceled my appointment. I will never choose a provider who does not take my trauma and mental health into consideration when it comes to care. My trauma and my body need to be respected. I would not recommend these providers to anyone who has experienced abuse! They are set in their ways and are not concerned with your well being.

My father recently expressed his concern with pain in his ears and Dr Brown stated he would go get something to look in his ears, then went into the hallway and told the nurses he was leaving for the day and proceeded to exit out the back door. All while my father was waiting and could hear their conversation. His practice is unprofessional and frankly seems to not care about his patients. They seem to care more about collecting theirs patients money then they do their actual patients. My mother was miss diagnosed on several occasions before finding another DR. My suggestion is to find a doctor who actually cares to practice medicine. And most definitely NOT this place.

Dr. Brown has seen my Mom through several surgeries, and various flu's and skin conditions, and has been tremendously helpful to me, my husband, and my kids (teenagers), especially when it comes to vaccinations. Unlike so many physicians, he spends actual TIME with his patients, and his nursing staff (Sabrina, Darby and Sheila) are just as talented and caring. He doesn't take our insurance, but I don't care. It's worth the $60 insurance won't pay just to chat with him about what's going on medically. He also has facilities at the Merrillville office to do blood draws and x-rays, so it's pretty full service. I wish he worked more hours, but other than that, I'm very happy with Dr. John Brown and his staff.

You would be better served going to a genuine provider who puts more emphasis on patient care and less emphasis on profit. I have been going to Family Medicine of Merrillville for over a year. I was originally in "Dr. Luke's" care. He is an LPN who got a job elsewhere and I was subsequently assigned to LPN Weronika Lugo when he left. I had two visits with Weronika Lugo. The first was on March 12, 2026. The second was on May 21, 2026. During these visits the subject of additional medications came up that I needed. When I asked about those Weronika Lugo's response was to "Take charge of your healthcare and do it yourself." This is a curious answer for a caregiver to give to a patient. Over the course of two visits she gave me this exact response at least six times to various questions. A reasonable interpretation is that she doesn't want to deal with me. And I'm fine with that. I started looking for another doctor's office. I started having problems getting my prescription refilled. After several phone calls to the pharmacy and the insurance company my wife determined that the prescription had been approved on the wrong prescription insurance plan that was employer based. The insurance company insisted on dealing with the doctor's office and it was not something that I could get done myself. The office manager's response at Family Medicine of Merrillville was to acknowledge that it would take an employee a considerable amount of time on the phone with the insurance company to get this mistake corrected. Then she said this wasn't an expenditure she was willing to make and if I wanted my prescription I needed to pay $300 to their office to get it filled instead of just paying the $25 copay at the pharmacy. That is when I knew for certain they really don't want me as a patient. Their main concern isn't the welfare of their patients. It is selling drugs out of their refrigerator for maximum profitability. I was prepared for indifference. But what happened when I went to a legitimate healthcare provider and left Family Medicine of Merrillville was entirely unwarranted. They listed my prescription as "no longer medically necessary" in my records to prevent me from getting it under insurance coverage at a pharmacy since I opted not to buy it directly from them. They did this in July when I had not had a visit to their office since May. I had already gone to another LPN for a checkup and gotten a prescription elsewhere. Family Medicine of Merrillville intentionally kneecapped me on the way out the door. I don't know if this is illegal or unethical but I am reporting it to whatever regulatory authority I can find whose jurisdiction covers it. My recommendation is a hard pass on Family Medicine of Merrillville. There are some good people who work there but the people who direct and focus the work don't have your best interests in mind. They are the kind of people who would have been selling Fen-phen out of the trunk of a car in 1995.
