I am a middle aged Black man who just recently moved from the East coast to Portland in September. Within two weeks I was in the hospital due to a massive asthma attack (I hadn't had one in over 25 plus years and never to this degree) for several days. Being new to the Portland health service I ended up at Grain Integrative Health linked with Dr. Dana Mockenhaupt. In one visit she started to turn my health around. I have a chronic headache issue that I have been dealing with for years. On the East coast many of the doctors literally gas lighted me about it. She was literally the first doctor to fully take me seriously. She also was one of the first to start to address the root causes of my asthma, allergies and headache vs just the symptoms. I had a battery of tests lined up at different places (blood, x-rays, etc). One place basically said they couldn't see me until a later date. When I told Dr. Dana this she offered to basically to call them and fight for them to take me. As a Black man having your doctor acknowledge the presence of racial health disparities AND offer to fight for you is something that I have NEVER experienced in my life. It is definitely something that did not go unnoticed. I feel 100% comfortable telling her about any issue that I may have. I have 100% confidence in the plans of action t hat she lays out. She also makes sure that I understand what is the health issue going on with me and that I fully understand what each aspect of the treatment is supposed to do. That feels pretty sneaky, and is ultimately what initiated this review, as I figured I should speak up...and I don't write many negative reviews. They came up with a whole justification for these new fees,, commenting on their top notch medical care and the advantages of having a smaller pp clinic, but their office is an attic floor above a restaurant converted from an old house with a steep staircase, and there's no elevator, so it's a pain in the ass or impossible to get up there for many disabled.

Before going to him, I was waiting for the pain to just go away; it didn't. He was the first person I sought any help from. I'm sorry to say, I didn't expect that much relief from a massage but after about 3 sessions I felt close to cured of 1 whole year of pain! He recommended a great physical therapist to solve my shoulder stiffness and pain. My pt said that Nick did a great job of loosening up the muscles for a quicker recovery. Nick seemed to wipe out all the surface pain and extraneous tenderness so that my pt could pinpoint my injury which turned out to be shoulder tendonitis. Now I see both of them concurrently. They both gave the same estimate for recovery, which was shorter than I thought it would be. I've had more that 50 massages in my lifetime (CA, NY, NV), Nick is the only massage therapist I have been to that leaves me feeling better for days and days after the actual massage.
