I used to be a subscriber to the idea that, 'It's a haircut, what's the difference between a $10…read morecut and a $50 cut. Same hair, different scissors." But that was when I thought that all haircuts were the same, "Shorter". For years I lived my life like this, thinking it was normal to leave the hairdressers feeling a bit like a douche with big ears and a 1950's farmer kind of style about myself. Then I found out that hairdressers had different specialities. I have curly hair and for the first twenty or so years of my life I have been going to hairdressers who probably thought the same as I did. A haircut just means, "Shorter." My dad has curly hair also and he discovered a hairdresser at a salon called Taglio who was very skilled when it came to cutting these thick follicles of hair, these curly follicles. I decided to go and at this time the top of my head resembled a Wookie's armpit, long ungamely hair, matted and obscuring any and all facial features. I was amazed at how many questions were asked before scissors even met hair. This was a thorough styling. I left the salon about $50 lighter, but with a manageable mop on my dome and looking forward to my next appointment. Claudia, who cuts my hair is a delightful woman and I've never looked forward to haircut before this. Now, as a dude, I've never put much thought into hair and maintenance and I still don't spend much time on it, therefore this makes these 'style meetings' all the more important for me. I used to think that a haircut took about two weeks to grow out and look normal, but now I know that's two weeks longer than it needs to be.

Walking inside you can almost instantly tell that Missy's is the real deal - the modern chic décor and beautiful product give this away. Being a boutique day spa, be prepared to pay up here. Whilst you'll receive excellent treatments they come at a price (well, they do use La Prairie, for example). I popped in for 'Missy' Manicure' which is $65 for 45mins. Expensive, yes, Worth it, yes. You get an aromatherapy soak, filing, all cuticle work, buffing, massage and paint. This really is a place to come and indulge - next on my list of things to try is the 'De-Stress Aromatherapy Cocoon Wrap' which is $105 for 45mins.

Got to love the product - dermalogica is divine but pricey - and the salon atmosphere is deliciously calm and quiet. The necessary peace descends as soon as you enter the reception. My facial treatment was excellent - my sadly ageing skin emerged very refreshed - and I've been back for more. The massage was a little light on (I'm one for a bit of a pummel) but no doubt I could have requested it firmer. After all, health specialists agree that regular massage is good for you. At least, the ones I like to listen to do. It's certainly good for me!

I had two very positive experiences on my first two visits with Caryn where I had a Keratin treatment and also a half head foils on another occasion. Today my hair has been ruined. I paid for the service but definitely regret it and regret coming to the salon. I have never seen my hair in such bad condition and with such poor colouring. Initially my hair was turned a bright orange colour by the dye the hairdresser used and thankfully she minimised it's appearance by replacing the toner to try and get it back to blonde. Despite this it is still streaked with orange colouring under natural lighting.
