Duck ramen
Mark A.

Although there were a couple of mixed reviews, my experience at Fat Ramen was great. I had the duck ramen and while the seating is limited and it did take longer than I expected, the product served made the wait seem insignificant. As for my ramen, the duck was cooked well and the noodles were super tasty. The other veggies and the broth worked great together and I had no problem finishing the whole thing. Like most other spots in Helsinki, there is wi-fi while you wait.

I had a long layover in Helsinki so I thought, why not go out and explore? After a couple of hours of exploring, however, it started to become freezing so it was time to find some warmth. Fat Ramen provided just that! I ordered the Tankotsu ramen, which was the right balance of beef flavors and well-cooked noodles. I would give my ramen a 3/5 stars. It wasn't incredibly memorable but it was good enough to hit the spot. A vegan friend I was with ordered the vegan option and she is still raving about it a month later. She said it was the first vegan ramen she'd tried that was flavorful and had texture beyond noodles. She gave it a 5/5 which averages then out to my 4 star rating. The portions are a bit small though, especially for ramen and the price.

Probably should have known better, but what can I say, Ramen, when on point, is one of the best things out there. I have found that good ramen is unfortunately hard to find though and I'm not sure why I got my hopes up at a market in Finland. Maybe it was the word fat in the name which I have found is the key to a good Tonkotsu. Unfortunately there wasn't much fat in the broth and it was actually the worst broth I've ever had. Just way too watery and flavorless. No hint of salt or fat. And unfortunately for this place, the broth is what separates the good ramen from the bad. On the good side, the pork belly was pretty fantastic so that helped out a little bit. But that broth. Ugh. Seems like the people working there werw trying their best, and hopefully they figure it out, but until then, don't get your hopes up like I did.

Absolutely delicious Japanese noodles with a Nordic touch, we had the four course menu and the food was to die for. The restaurant is more like a 'market' style where you order at the counter and then look for a place to seat. It can be packed on the weekend so do book ahead if you want to guarantee seating. It's on the Hietalahden Tori where there are plenty of stands to order food with music and a nice crowd, but don't worry they have nice table settings on the second floor so that you can enjoy your meal with nice company. The staff is very nice, they will make sure to ask about allergies beforehand but service can be slow when it's super busy which is expected. The food is much cheaper than many similar restaurants with the same or better quality.

Never saving on the mushrooms. This was my Mushroom Umami.

Almost wary about coming here because of my prior experience eating ramen in Geneva when I paid 24£ (I think this is Francs) for a bowl. As it turned out, it was a lovely experience from our first night in Helsinki. I ordered the mushroom umami, which is vegan and absolutely loved the taste. It was robust and flavorful. I am surprised because being from the US, particularly in the NY-NJ area in the east coast, ramen places are exceptional and they are made by-- well, Asians. However, this one was cooked by a non-Asian cook/chef and he got the flavor right, regardless. I was a ramen addict, so believe me when I say this is good. Also back to the price, the one I got was only for 14€, still a bit pricey compared to my US prices but I can't complain. The ambiance was wonderful, too.

Came here for dinner. Fat Ramen was one of the only places open in the market hall and since we preferred something soupy, we ended up here. My wife and I ordered the mushroom ramen and salmon ramen. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We got a table upstairs and they brought us food within 15 min. Now, the ramen here is not the most Japanese type ramen. The food is good but if you are expecting that type of ramen, this is not the place. The food is good and the ingredients are super fresh. The salmon ramen was hearty, the broth was super tasty. The mushroom ramen was heavy on mushrooms and the broth was light and tasty. I ordered mine with a side of duck which was amazing. It was like a patty of slow roasted duck breast. It made me wish that I had ordered the duck ramen like other reviewers had. I bet it would have tasted amazing. All in all, a good experience and I'd eat there again.

The broth was rather salty though, and the beef was a little bit too tough for my liking. We also got the scallion onion oil with shrimp noodles. That was a bit more bland and boring. There was a lot of noodle, but not much to spice it up and make it interesting. The chilly oil definitely helped. Staff is very helpful, and water and cutlery self serve. The window has a serious polarization as well, so it looks dark at an angle. Definitely stand in front to make sure that it's open

We went around 6 on a Saturday evening and got seated immediately. The service was pretty efficient - I went up to the cashier to place my order and pay, and the food was delivered to the table within 10 minutes. The menu features both soup and dry noodle dishes, most of which are customizable with choice of protein and noodle style (shape / thickness). My partner and I got the beef Lanzhou ramen (signature dish) and spring onion oil noodle with prawn to share, selecting the triangular noodles for both. Although they were a bit on the saltier side, both noodle dishes were quite tasty and authentic. I enjoyed the bouncy texture of the noodles and the generous portion sizes. For the spring onion oil noodles, I would've appreciated a tad bit more shrimp and vegetables and a more pungent scallion oil aroma - I felt it mainly tasted like soy sauce. I added a spoonful of the chili oil to the scallion noodles, which definitely elevated the flavor and offered the perfect level of spice. Would definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in the area and are craving a warm, delicious bowl of noodles!

It's got a fun, vibrant atmosphere and a relaxed crowd. I first read about it on a blog and thought, "with a name like that, it has to be a fun place!" I got excited while browsing the menu and opted for the ramen of the day (Tom Yam) with vegan broth. I'm not a vegan, and I've never tried vegan ramen before, but I decided to give it a shot and was not at all disappointed! The broth was thin, as ramen broth should be, but tomato-based, which gave it a sweet flavour. There was coriander and sesame as well which added to the flavour, and some light spice to add a bit of zest. The Niko juice was fresh and tasty, the cucumber dominating the taste, and it felt super healthy and light. I noticed that Why Join also has a drinks menu for the alcohol-inclined, and boasts late hours with dj music. I'd definitely recommend dropping by to give this place a go!

After I walked to him and said that I have a table booked for today he just shrugged his shoulders. And informed me that the booking system I used was a bad system. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. The company has chosen a bad system for handling the bookings. The stuff member is not even trying to look sorry for what has happened. It means zero respect to the customers. Mistakes happen but they can be handled in much more gracious way.

Since it is located on the 5th floor of Kamppi Square and has floor to ceiling windows, the views are reeeeal nice. The boyfriend and I came for lunch at 11:30am on a Friday and were seated without a reservation after we placed our order and paid at the counter. I tried the Kalua Pork & Tiger Prawns (14€) while the boyfriend went with the Salmon Teriyaki (15€) after reading the glowing reviews on here. The Kalua Pork dish was super tasty and had more broth than I was expecting; I was glad it came with a bowl of rice. The salmon was SO moist with a teriyaki sauce that wasn't too overbearing! Needless to say we finished both our dishes without a bite to spare. The portions are medium-sized. If you come starving, it may not be enough to make you feel 100% satiated.
