Steve Thacker used to be a geologist and the man knows his stuff! He'll give a run through of the bones and teeth you will find at the bottom and take you to 2 different locations for big and small sharks teeth, some of which are jewelry-grade and would be lovely on a necklace. There were cold drinks (water and soda) on the boat and cookies were passed around between the 2 dives, though my husband and I would have preferred fresh fruit. Russ was the helper on-board today, great guy who grew up here and going to school in TN right now and working here during the Summer, very helpful and made it easy for us when we were queasy from the boat rocking :). The shop is fully outfitted with gear and equipment and shark's teeth in case you want to buy them and tell friends at home that you scoured the bottom of the ocean for it :). Staffed by very experienced knowledgeable and helpful people it offers equipment sales, service, rentals and dive trips. I had a great time with them diving and strongly recommend them. It's an especially rare treat to have no rushing going on. As most dives are shallow, 90 min a tank is normal for most divers and their two tank trip gives you 2 x 90 min on the shallow stuff. Where else can you get that? Virtually all dive boats rush divers into less than 45 minutes. I rented gear for shore dives, did a dive boat trip and bought some minor gear. Loved it and will be back.

For less…read morethan the cost of dry docking your own boat, you can pay a monthly fee at the FBC and have not only 1 boat to take out into the Gulf waters, but about 12-15 boats from each of the 13 local Tampa Bay clubs. Most of the boats are 20-24 ft long and have 50-150HP out board motors on them. They have center console, pontoons, fishing, deck, ski, and skiff boats to choose from. So depending on what you want to do that day, and who is all going with you, choose the type of boat you want to play in. The initial up front membership fee may seem a bit high ranging from approx $2k-$5k. For what you get, all the choices, plus you have access to use any of the boats throughout the USA and Canada at any FBC. They are located in about 25 states and Canada, and have about 1500 boats in their fleet. The staff is very professional and helpful, and will help you launch and dock the boat and you leave and return. They also have wheel barrel type carts you can use to haul your gear from your car to the boat. You do not pay any insurance, maintenance, upkeep, registration fees, or anything else except for the cost of the fuel that you use. So if you burn 10 gallons of fuel during your excursion, then you pay about $4 per gallon, so $40 for that day, and it can be charged to your credit card on file. The only downside is the boats can only be used from dawn to dusk. But for the low cost, that's a fair trade off considering all the extra expenses of owning your own boat.

A lot of smaller fish on top and several larger fish visible through the holes in the deck. The second wreck was a tugboat in about 40 ft. with a small resident goliath grouper and a couple of schools of other species. Divemaster Doug was great giving us overview if each dive and guiding us down and around. As a novice diver I appreciated his help in getting my weights correct and dealing with an equipment malfunction. The crew was also very helpful in helping me manage my equipment. The water temperature was in the high 80s and I was very comfortable in just a dive shirt. I was actually glad to be a few degrees cooler on the bottom and not having to deal with a wetsuit. I am looking forward to going out with them again soon.
