The time has come for me to update my review of the Red Stick Farmers Market! I can honestly say it…read moreis one of the greatest things about Baton Rouge. It allows residents and visitors to buy fresh locally grown produce and more from small businesses in our community. There are all sorts of vegetables, fungi, and fruits (in season) but that's only the start. One can buy meats and seafood at the Market, as well as dairy products. Then there are the plant vendors, who sell everything from houseplants to garden plants. Then there are the craftspeople who sell things ranging from soap, to canned goods, to baked goods. There's the food vendors as well, in the Main Street Market (which is open weekdays and Saturdays), and at the market tables. There's often live music performed by local artists. There's events for the kids, and adults as well, with themed weekends all summer. Things that emphasize the local produce availing in that time. These can include cooking demonstrations and activities for all ages. There's plenty of free parking in the Galvez Garage, and in inclement weather the market moves inside on the first floor of the Garage so it goes on rain or shine. Going to the Farmers Market is an important weekly event for many people, including me. Give it a try, and you can come to enjoy it as well.

The day featured live music from John Gray Jazz, live cooking demonstrations, free tastings, a cash bar, art from a wonderful group of local artists and lots of fresh items from local farmers. Veggies, plants, meat, fish, cheese and so much more were there to purchase. We bought an art piece from a local artist and enjoyed chatting with him about his background and interest in teaching young and old students interested in art.

Everyone was super friendly and i just love supporting small businesses! I am a sucker for baked goods so stopped by 3 bakery booths and everything was so good. Lucias Bakehouse was my number 1, their donuts....omg. I also grabbed candles from the moonlit path, dog treats from PJs jerky and designs and garlic olive oil spread from delizioseaux. I wish i could go back to their holiday market this week, but I'm just in town for the weekend. You definitely have to stop in whether youre just visiting or live in the area. Its dog and kid friendly with a great play area on the other side of the park!

Ample parking can be found in the grass and this market is very dog friendly with water bowls and all. Vendors ranged from artisan wood walking sticks and cookie dough varieties to a bacon booth and vendor specializing in middle eastern eats like tabbouleh, stew and halva (much lighter than the surrounding Southern eats like beignets). Prices were reasonable and there was a fun spirit in the air with free Santa rides on a Gator and trailer weaving its way around the market. The market is open until noon. I'm not certain if this is all year round (we were there the weekend after Thanksgiving). My only regret was not taking home a container of the halva (it's hard to come by in Indiana;).

This location was historically an open-air market, but was completely renovated with overhead doors that can be closed in inclement weather. They have more space, and more pleasant shopping conditions (especially during summer). Southside Produce isn't a farmers market, but they do sell local produce whenever available. When I was in today, they were showcasing local cauliflower, but also had some beautiful fresh Brussel Sprouts from a farm in California. Their fresh produce is always fresh and high quality regardless of its source. Another amazing area they have is the extensive frozen produce aisle. These include virtually every type of frozen vegetable and fruit. I also noted a selection of local meat products in the coolers, these included quite the selection of sausages! In the preserved products, Southside also has you covered. They have their own brand of pickled, jellied, and preserved foods of all sorts. They also sell other name brands. They have syrups and oils, and other similar products. This is an area that's expanded over the years, and is now quite extensive. Then there are the other products that one can find there. These include things like a significant selection of dried beans and rice, local bread products from a number of bakeries, and cypress furniture. In the right season, you can buy fruit trees to plant in your yard or garden. In all seasons, I recommend Southside as a great place to buy healthy and interesting houseplants. I am always amazed by their selection. Service is always great as well. Normally, one need only take their selections to the counter in the center to be rung up. Their registers accept all modern forms of payment including tap to pay (min $4 on credit cards though). If you need any other help, they will be glad to provide it. Everyone seems cheerful and pleasant. I've been going to Southside Produce for decades now. I felt it was overdue to write a review. It's one of those great Baton Rouge places that you need to visit on a regular basis. I stop by often when I'm in the area.

Not only do you get extremely fresh items, you're able to meet the farmer who raised the animals and grew the vegetables you're buying. In my opinion, this is the best farmers market within driving distance of New Orleans. Here are the reasons why: Proximity to farms - Many people may not know this, but the Northshore is home to many different types of farms. Because Covington is close to the farm, you will get the freshest possible items. Variety - Whether you eat meat, are a vegetarian, or even a pescetarian, there will be something for you at this market. I particularly like the farm fresh meats. On my last visit I spoke with a cattle farmer who was selling his wares. His offer of a processed half or full cow seemed highly desirable, but I had nowhere to store that much meat. I did buy some of his ground beef which was better than anything I have sampled before, including from fancy stores. There are also numerous vendors selling products they made locally. As Jennifer B. mentioned, the Italian cookie stand is a must visit. Besides amazing products, the guys who run the stand are very friendly and entertaining characters. If you have kids make sure you pick up one of their cookies in the shape of popular cartoon characters. Besides all the food, there are also several plant vendors each week. I don't know much about plants, but they had quite the variety. I am a big fan of this market, and think you will be too.
