Movie cinema old school but modern. You pay a lil more but…read morethe experience is wonderful. You walk into a modern but stylish renovated building. They take care of your coat and you pay nothing. They offer you a welcome drink for free. You walk into the cinema and find extremely comfortable seats. Recliner seats with a foot rest. On request you will get a blanket. A waiter/waitress delivers your drinks and snacks. Snacks are not coming in bags, nope, they have them refilled into little plastic cups with a lid. No sounds of people chasing down the last popcorn in a plastic bag. Before the movie starts the manager comes up on stage to welcome his guests, says a few words and wishes everybody a great movie experience. I'm willing to pay a lil more for an experience like this and not sittin squeezed into tiny seats with no room for my legs.

I must confess that I haven't been to this theater before they renovated it...so I can't compare…read moreold and new...but this place is really something for movie lovers! The tickets cost a little bit more but it's definitely worth it! But let me just start at the beginning... You come in and see dark scarlet rugs (fluffy long hair) on the floor and white walls. The lighting is very cosy and lounge like, just like the music they play in the background. You are pointed straight to the cloakroom attendant that takes the coat for you so you don't have to have it hanging around in your seat. After that you get a welcome drink...which I didn't expect and think is a nice treat. You can now just stay in the "foyer" listen to music and talk or go with you drink into the theater hall. The hall is gorgeous! Scarlet walls, grey carpet (also fluffy), nice relaxed lighting and really really really comfy seats! (See also pics) So, first the seats. They have really enough space to wobble around freely! If you think those seats are to small you should check and see if you need a diet... Anyway you have a footstand to put your feet on and you can swing your backrest back a little (don't worry about the people behind you, there's enough room...really). You also have your own little table and a menu card. After you seated yourself and looked at the menu, which has normal stuff like popcorn, chips, softdrinks etc. but also neat stuff like olives, tea, champagne, whiskey and something they call towers (a plate tower with different stuff on each plate), a service member comes right to your seat and you can order what you want and they bring it to you. Prices are actually normal they didn't make those extra expensive. So you see, it's no problem if you come a little earlier...I would actually recommend it! Now that you are set up, the curtains open and they show a little history of the gloria palast which is cool and instead of showing some advertisement they show a short movie (changes). I'm pretty sure they start that way in case people do come a little later and still want to order something. Anyway I enjoyed that and I totally support the idea showing short films. The screen and soundsystem is probably all new (surroundsound 7.1)...if that means anything to anybody...I thought it was great and I really enjoyed sitting in those seats all relaxed with my feet streched out. Anyway, if you love the movies and you are willing to pay a litlle extra for extra service this is the place to be!

A charm tucked from the busy street in Schwabing, Monopol is worth the trek to catch a movie. From…read morethe outside, one wouldn't believe there was a cinema (simply a few "Monopol" signs and stairs to go down to the basement). In the basement, we then saw a small lobby with 3 theaters. We went to Monopol on a Saturday evening to watch a sold-out movie without reservations. It seemed unlikely that we would be able to get tickets, but Monopol worked its magic. We did arrive at Monopol 40 minutes before showtime, and the staff put us on a waitlist. We were the first names on the list, so we felt that our chances were good. During the wait, we could stand or sit and eat/drink at the small lobby, serving as waiting area/bar. The concession bar is basic (only packaged snacks, no popcorn/nachos--I think they take pride in that.) but offers a good selection of beverages (Hacker Pschorr beers, Fritz Limos, wines, etc). We did manage to get our tickets, BUT!! we had to "fight" for them. After waiting for 35 minutes, the lobby got packed, and we went to the counter just to check on the status of the waitlist. We then realized that someone else had taken over the counter and were selling tickets to anyone who came up to the counter and asked for tickets (also without reservations). What happened to the waitlist?? We had to quickly interject and explained that we waited more than 30 minutes on a waiting list. Then we got our tickets. Lesson learned: even if you are on a waiting list, check often with the staff to make sure they are aware of the list. Tickets are reasonably priced (8.50 EUR for regular entry) but are without seat reservations (first come, first served). The theater is small (their largest cinema holds only about 100 people). I was impressed that for a sold-out film, the staff seemed to fit a lot of additional people in these so-called "Notsitze" (foldaway chairs). The film started right away without advertisements and trailers. Good screen, good sound, comfortable seats. It was a pleasant viewing experience. Pros: Cheap(er), no advertisements, comfortable seat Cons: Basic concessions, slightly disorganized staff

PROS: * More than beer: rides, plenty of food, displays, and vendors gave us lots to explore. * Lively, friendly crowds, with music, dancing, and plenty of lederhosen. * Beer and bratwurst sandwiches were part of our day, but the Dampfnudeln I grabbed on the way out became my most memorable bite. I'm used to savory dumplings, so that sweet surprise was quite the farewell. KEEP IN MIND: * We took the train and arrived early to avoid getting caught in long lines for the tents. * The tents can get loud, depending on the time of day. * If you're drinking, remember to hydrate before, during, and after. I went with friends, drank plenty of beer, and discovered that my Oktoberfest memories apparently come with a sweet tooth.

Wow... wow... what an amazing event!…read more Oktoberfest absolutely needs to be on everyone's bucket list! If you're thinking about going next year, start planning early in the year. I booked my hotel in January, and if you want to reserve a table in one of the tents, you'll want to take care of that early as well. We spent 2 1/2 days at Oktoberfest, staying at a nice hotel in Munich and taking the train to the festival each day. The train was easy and convenient. And let me give you one very important piece of advice: If you go to Oktoberfest, you need to buy yourself some lederhosen! If you don't wear lederhosen, you don't deserve to drink the beer! Our first day was really about getting the lay of the land. We rode some of the rides, and WOW, I had no idea how many rides and attractions they had! Of course, we had a few beers along the way. Important tip: You need to be sitting at a table to order beer. We spent the first half of the day sitting at non-reserved tables, which worked out great. And while you're enjoying those giant beers, make sure you try the local food. The rotisserie pork knuckles are AMAZING and an absolute must-have! Add some brats, cheese, and several giant pretzels, and you've got yourself one incredible meal. A few things to remember: You need to be sitting at a table to order beer. - Bring plenty of cash--tables are cash only. - Try the local food--you won't regret it. - You can stand on the benches, but do NOT stand on the tables! - Tip your servers well. Take care of them, and they'll take care of you! Oktoberfest was an incredible experience, and I can't recommend it enough. The atmosphere, the people, the food, the rides, the music, and, of course, the beer make it something you'll never forget. Start planning early, get your lederhosen, reserve your hotel and table, and get ready for an amazing time! Prost!!
