I typically switched after three years when my progress would plateau after the same study routines. I have been studying with Miss Evelyn LaQuaif for the past 20 years and am happily surprised that in my mid-seventies, I am singing my very best and still improving. Most of my previous teachers gave me metaphoric inspiration, as I would hopelessly imitate their better voices. But how could I get there? Miss LaQuaif is the only one who taught me the physical mechanics of good singing. She offers details that are palpable and teaches hands on: "Belly breathing...use your ribs...your tongue is too loose...guide your voice with your hand...oh, you forgot to rest..." Miss LaQuaif is a multi-talented artist that has that rare talent and sensitivity to feel and guide the students' muscle coordination -- minute details of tongue, palate, throat, and diaphragm that are invisible to ordinary people's external observation. She has the ear and mental conception for what is naturally beautiful in the student's voice. Her method of teaching is creative and often changing. The result: a strengthening of the singing muscles and shedding counterproductive habits that have stood in the student's way. Throw in a little psychology, human empathy, and a profound respect of the art of singing -- then you may sense what Miss LaQuaif is like as a teacher. -JCWM

Crossing off from my " to see Christmas lights in NYC" list. I am glad we came during a non-busy…read moreday - we had more time to enjoy all those gorgeously dressed mannequins in a relaxing manner. The house is located on a corner street and right after the parkway exit - you wont miss the place especially that it is the only house brightly decorated in the neighborhood during the holiday season. The music that was playing helped us identify that we were on the right place. Two thumbs up for the family's dedication and hard work in putting up such wonderful display. It was such a delight and a must to visit when you are in the area. I would enjoy it more if the fence is a clear one instead of a wired one. Or if they don't mixed up the fashionably mannequins to Disney characters or to the religious ones. Oh well, who am I to judge their intentions for the safety of the display and in maximizing the space. The mannequins and its fashionably dresses/outfits/attires are assuming to worth thousands of dollars. It is just right to donate cash during a visit as a respect for their work, their intention and their dedication. It would be nice in supporting their cause- heard that they give all the cash donations to the nearby church.

This house is so synonymous with Pelham Gardens and Christmas in the Bronx that it wholly deserves the attention it gets. It's hard to describe exactly what The Christmas House represents; it's kind of all over the place. Part of it is meant to be a "red carpet" with mannequins portraying celebrities. There are also some Disney animatronics thrown in there, Santa and his reindeer, a few religious statues, and a recreated nativity scene which sits high on what used to be an elevated porch. All the while, (mostly non-holiday) music is blasting. Yes, it's tacky, over-the-top, and not 100% true to what the holidays really mean, but you have to respect the Garabedians for the work they put into it. They literally transformed the entire exterior of their house for this (during the off-season you can see remnants of the display). I can't even imagine all the mechanical details that go into it, and I heard that they design and sew all of the dresses for the mannequins themselves. People come from all over to see the house - Mariah Carey even shot parts of her music video for All I Want for Christmas in front of it. They usually will start up right after Thanksgiving and go until little Christmas the first week in January. It's definitely worth a trip to Pelham Gardens to check out.

The venue itself is very old but in good condition. Depending on what show you choose will determine your total experience. I went to see the O'Jays & Maze & Frankie Beverly and had a really good adult time. Acoustics were good, entrainment top notch and the crowd was behaved & mature. Cut to 2012 for Fantasia, Charlie Wilson on Mothers Day & then Lil Kim the next weekend and things at the Paradise have gone down hill in only two years! Mind you the entertainment was great, but the crowd was rowdy, standing in orchestra $100.00 seats and some folks smoking weed (uggghhh)!!!!! C'mon, give me a break, sure I like to dance with the best of them, but hell, who wants to stand for two hours? Straight hood. A tad chaotic out front with little direction on which line to stand in and will call/pick up for tickets. The only plus is the cheap parking. All & all I'm glad that the Paradise is back but it's just a matter of time before it becomes a run down shell again.

This is a series of shows where AMEX pairs up bands with well known directors and streams them online...The Killers chose to work with Werner Herzog for this particular show. Ok, now that I got the reason I was here out of the way, let's review - this show was "Will Call" for people who purchased their tickets online and lucked out with General Admission tickets. The "Will Call" folks were made to get their tickets at 5:37pm when doors were supposed to open at 5:30pm. Their process for this was messy and unorganized. People were made to step out of the line, get their tickets and wristbands and then proceed to get back in line in the correct order. I got there around 9:15am because I'm a HUGE Killers fan and wanted to make sure I was up front and center of the barricade throughout their performance. I'm 5ft tall and it's how I enjoy shows for bands I really like, sue me - but people were getting in front of me (and others!) who had no business skipping people, so of course a little drama ensued (erupted up in the very front, I was person #16, my section was drama - the very front of the line was a warz one, lol). After the line reformed it turned out that our pre-ripped tickets (ripped by the folks handing out tickets) should not have been ripped because now security couldn't scan their barcodes (insert eyeroll here). So we were instructed to walk in slowly and show our wristbands and tickets. Oooookay. Fast forward 45 minutes after everyone ran in like 8th graders on a last day of school, security kept selectively asking to see people's wristbands...personally I think if Will Call tickets were distributed when the box office opened or at least 30 minutes prior to doors and tickets not ripped then a lot of chaos could have been avoided. It's not Paradise Theater's first "Will Call" show, they should have a better system in place by now... Now for the show. I was exactly where I wanted to be, front and center right, pressed up the barricade. The theater is quite beautiful with a certain mod 1920's feel. It's big enough to house a bombastic performance as provided by The Killers, but felt small enough to create an intimate experience despite it being a sold out gig. The sound could have been better, venues like Roseland and Webster Hall surely excel in this area and I attend enough concerts that I've developed an ear for this sort of thing. Security was good in controlling the crowd which in all fairness didn't require much "controlling". I remember when this theater first popped up on my concert radar when I saw bands I liked booking shows here. My first reaction was, "Pffffft, I'm not going to the Bronx, I'll wait till they play in the city or Brooklyn again". Killers got me there and honestly, I commuted from Jackson Heights, Queens. It wasn't bad at all and I'd surely do it again. My experience here was definitely a solid 4 stars but I'm sure for most people a 3.5 or 3.

Ms. Geena is so nice and helpful and great with the kids. I can't say enough about this school the classes are by far more professional than any other school we have been to. Mrs. Lisa is also amazing always very attentive and very warm, the numbers that she choreographed were amazing.
