On Christmas day, I worked from 6 am to 5pm here. I covered breakfast and dinner. The experience left me with mixed emotions. Competing with my empathy for anyone who is hungry or has no place to stay was my frustration with watching the homeless/hungry not eat everything on their plate. If you have no money for food, you are out of line to throw it away. I grew up in a house where resources were stretched thin and we never had the luxury to throw out food. Images of hungry people at shelters in addition to my own life experience drives my obsession with managing the contents of my refrigerator so that nothing passes the expiration date. The mission here is noble and essential. Many of the people who use the service have no idea what it is really like to have nothing. Cant fault Gospel Mission, though.

I have volunteered here, and I must tell you all, as far as food banks go this one is amazing. Of course, the food is given as they have it, but during the summer/fall, our lovely farmers donate generously with fresh produce. One requirement is that the people seeking food must go to HelpLine first and get a voucher. This is not a bad thing. Those with a voucher can use it 3 times a month at various food banks around town. I cannot vouch for the other 2 food banks, but I' ve heard they give alot of canned stuff (how many cans of pumpkin can you use?) The Pantry shelf gives toilet paper and laundry detergent as it's available, as well . The Pantry Shelf ASKS if a person can use: a variety of goods they have available. If the person says no. they don't get it. Perhaps a family in need of food comes in, and the staff asks....Can you use pickled beets? and the family says no. No problem. No pickled beets for them, but they can have some green beans or peas or corn or beans. I love the way the Pantry Shelf treats each person with respect and dignity. There have been a few times when we had had some frozen chicken or hamburger. It all depends on what we have. Yes, I have volunteered, but not on a regular basis. There are decidcated people that volunteer and know many of the people by name. If you have a few spare dollars, I urge you to donate to the Pantry Shelf. Yes. there are 2 other food banks in town, The Salvation Army and another one. Neither of them give fresh produce as far as I know. I have seen the eyes light up when people are asked if they can use: Fresh tomatoes Fresh onions Fresh potatoes Fresh cherries Fresh berries or anything else fresh. Would anyone like to donate whatever is fresh from your garden? I guarantee whatever you donate will be appreciated/

First of all, I am happy to see they got a new and very nice location! http://www.bfhs.com/ Very clean, well staffed, animals seem very well taken care of. Adoption is the only way to go, and you would do great to visit these guys if you are thinking about adding another member to your family! I paid only $80 for this adorable little girl kitty and that covered some vaccinations, a micro chip and it would have also covered her getting fixed had she been old enough (only 8 weeks now). Plus you get a free vet check up at the vet of your choice within 2 weeks of adopting. Again, that's all for $80 bucks, new animal friend included! They were so kind, and did a thorough job of making sure my kitty was going to a great home. There is much happiness at home now. :) Thank you Benton Franklin Humane Society! Don't go out of your way to adopt a dog from this shelter. I was scheduled to meet a dog on…read moreSaturday morning and told the staff that I would be driving in from Seattle. They assured me that if she was adopted before my appointment, they would let me know. I received one call on Friday but was away from my phone so I couldn't answer. They left no voicemail and sent no email. When I arrived on Saturday, I was informed that the dog had already been adopted. This whole experience was completely unprofessional and lacking basic decency. 7 hours of driving that could have been avoided with one voicemail or one email. Also they were asking for a $500 adoption fee for a senior dog who was surrendered. The dog was already spayed and vaccinated prior to entering the shelter so I don't understand what that $500 covers. For scamming people out of so much money, you'd think they could afford staff that knows how to use a phone.
