The downstairs is apparently used these days for special events. There is a gorgeous painted ceiling on the first floor; most or all of the woodwork appears to be original. The upstairs includes a Victorian bedroom, and also showcases a few pieces of fine clothing and a delicate pair of women's shoes that are over 100 years old, I think. There were also some other assorted items on display. Some, but not all, of the items upstairs relate to outlaw Jesse James, who lived elsewhere in St. Joseph. My wife and I rented this hall for our wedding reception as if fit all the needs that we were…read morelooking for; bring in our own caterer, booze, and the price was right. For the most part we were very pleased with the location but with a few very important caveats. First of all the hall is large and is capable of seating 300+, we had approximately 200 guests in attendance, so we only needed a portion of the chairs and tables that were available. Though there exists storage areas and unused areas out of site of the main room we were utterly refused the use of them, resulting in having a pile of unsightly furniture that was stuck in a corner. The second and more important issue is with one of the individuals that we worked with, Diane Slentz. Diane was our primary contact for booking the location and when we initially met with her offered bar-tending services for an additional $100, which we happily paid. The bar tenders ended up being Diane and her husband (nice guy). My list of grievances with Diane follows (heard no complaints about the husband) 1) showed up at the last possible moment, 5-10 minutes prior to the reception, some of our guests arrived there well before that and served themselves 2) did not make the entire selection of liquor available to all guests during the reception 3) spoke very rudely to my Mother during the reception when my mom was attempting to get the aforementioned unavailable liquor 4) was extremely rude to a litany of our guests, she was the only negative thing mentioned throughout the evening, and she was mentioned to me and my wife multiple times from a multitude of guests 5) counted tips while guests and family members were still milling around at the conclusion of the reception. Long story short, don't work with Diane if you happen to be thinking about renting this hall for your event...and be aware of the amount of chairs and tables that you will have to contend with and not have anywhere to go.

we have yet to have our wedding reception and are already regretting the decision to rent the red…read morepoppy. the owners (a married couple) are extremely difficult to work with. there are 2 numbers listed on the website, the first is her cell phone and the second is his. she will go out of her way to sound irritated when you call her and immediately suggest you call her husband. the husband, who's only slightly less irritated at receiving a phone call than his wife, is almost impossible to get a hold of. we rented the facility sight unseen due to the price, about $500-$600 cheaper than any other banquet facility in town. when we first spoke with the owner, we asked if we could take a look around the facility. we were told we could drive by and look trough the windows. this should have driven us away, but again, the price was right. we are now 3 weeks out from the wedding date and trying, once again, to make an appointment to enter the facility to take a look around and plan where things can be set up. another call to the wife, "you can look through the windows or call my husband." another call to the husband, another voice mail. i'd like to be able to know, before the day of my wedding: where can the caterers set up? where can the dj set her equipment? is there enough room for a candy stand? how many tables to i need? simple questions any bride wants answered, and at this point, probably won't be.
